Normal is really easy, as is nightmare. The game doesn't start to become dangerous until hell and a meteorb can handle hell just fine.
In normal, run the Countess a few times to get the runes to make a Stealth armor and a Leaf staff (buy a staff that give +fireball). Use an act 2 merc with an Insight runeword. Make a Spirit sword ASAP and a spirit shield much later when you find a monarch shield. Trade for magefists.
If you can afford it later on, Tal Rasha's set is amazing.

I reinstalled Diablo 2 after few years.. Didn't remember I had actually bought it. However I don't plan to play it with any mods for now. Here's how to play it with CRT emulation with Reshade. Takes 5 minutes to install and looks much prettier than the default. But of course, it's just an opinion.

It doesn't affect the online because it depends on the glide OpenGl wrapper (which itself is Blizzard approved).

This is probably the easiest and most natural thing for the community to figure out over time. Hell becomes so difficult and demanding that people want maximize the potential and effectiveness of every point spent, and they slowly figured that block % doesn't rise beyond a certain point so maybe those extra dex points could be better spent on vitality. Or that heavy armor is definitely not worth speed penalty or massive strength points so they would rather spend just enough points on strength to be able to wear the best light armor, and the rest goes into vitality again. All this theorycrafting is ongoing in mmos, it's not that hard. You just need a very active playerbase and hamster wheel keeps spinning.

str is actually used on barbs just for damage
ar is covered by gear, good rares at the end and angelics at the start
energy was actually useful because of small mana pools unless you wore sojs/had bo

then xpac came and str became not even important for barbs, dex requires too much investment for max block, and mana is more generous on items

that easily shifts the meta from vit being the most important stat to 'wow, the other stats are complete garbage'

i recall checking of the "plugychest" file changes while the game is running, but i dont recall my findings, try this:

md5hash a file in d2 folder named chest or stash, put amulet of viper in page2, exit stash, check if file was modified with md5, if it was, do the next steps, if it wasnt, then save&exit, then do the steps:

>make a copy of the stashfile, go to game, and pull the amulet from page2 to page1 or inv,
>go to stashfile (once its modified) and delete it, then restore the copy,
>go into game and open stash, amulet will be on page2, but also on page1 or inv

its only useful if it modifies with the game running, if you have to save and exit, you might as well open a char editor and just make as many copies as you would like

It's my first ladder on classic because I wanted to try something that isn't LOD meta. It's been wonderful except getting left behind on the rush/cs train that apparently has no brakes.

Any advice as I continue down the path of a warrior? Dex seems like the most important, with strength mainly for equipment requirements and magic for a few useful spells. Right now I'm just abusing doorways to create a conveyor belt of carnage and doing my best to lure out archers.

First playthrough of D1 and the atmosphere and voice acting are both fantastic. Asking the drunkard about The Butcher was brutal.

How do I beat Act 5 Normal in Median XL as a melee barb? I'm at the part right before Baal where you have to destroy the monster generator, but I can't make it past the horde of monsters to get to the generator. If I try to kite them, the enemies spawn faster than I can kill them. I have 2500 hp and capped resists except for poison, but I still die nearly instantly.

Dexterity is definitely important to max early on as a warrior, because of the AC and To-Hit% it gives. Over time, you want to be putting just enough points into Magic for utility spells like Healing, Firewall, Town Portal, Phasing, Stone Curse, Golem, Guardian, and eventually Teleport and Mana Shield. All your other points should go mostly into Strength. Don't bother with axes - having a shield is way more useful.

I never understood reasoning behind skulls as gem items. Shouldn't there be an abundance of skulls, as we're literally cleaving skeletons heads and mobs left and right? Why can't we take their skulls? It's ridiculous.

Play a summoner. A Melee Holy Paladin can absolutely melt enemies even with 0 gear just through Colosseum+your summons

Barb Summoner is also really good, albeit slightly less tanky than Pally. I can't recommend necro because I haven't tried it.

More areas and exposure to the new enemy types would've been nice. As is, you pretty much never see any of the Balrogs other than the Venom Lords, or any of the Knights other than the Oblivion Knights, or any of the Spider Mages other than Storm Casters.

The waypoint placement is kinda fucked up, too. River of Flame waypoint being right outside the Chaos Sanctuary was a mistake, same with the City of the Damned waypoint being right outside the River of Flame entrance.

I've been doing ancient tunnels for a while and got a Trang's armor. Don't know how good that is, but I will probably keep doing this because I got really bored of Meph and Pindleskin, and I can't really farm the Pit with my blizz sorc.

I always have such a problem picking who to play. I love the game but you are funneled into playing something not fun or it's trailing behind the party when they're going sanic in Chaos or Baal. I'm playing classic which is feels right except Amazons get fucked (bows suck even more, gotta stick to white javelins or break) and lobbies are empty.

Since I do not have a CD / DVD drive I download D2 and LOD from battlenet. Unfortunately the installer has the 1.14 patch within, so I downgrade by replacing the game.exe with a 1.07 patch file and install the 1.10 patch. After that I install Eastern Sun but the game won't even load now.

The bone nec is really good for PvM, but there are faster builds such as the hammerdin (especially when decked out with enigma etc) or a well geared sorc with an infinity merc. Yes

Consider trying the Tchernobog version instead. Beelzebub has all the quests implemented, but hasn't been updated in years, and lacks all of the rebalancing and bugfixes that have been done in Tchernobog.
If you're really serious about getting the full single-player "experience", go with Beelzebub, but if you want co-op, or just a more balanced and stable game, go with Tchernobog.

It's basically just high-res D1 with a lot of features added in from Hellfire and classic D2.
There's rares, but a good blue item of the same level with the exact affixes you want will generally be better, and many of the uniques manage to stay better than even the most optimal rares of the same level.
There's set items, but just like in D2, they're mostly a novelty and don't really become viable until you start getting very high-level sets.
There's no socketing or runeword fuckery, if you're worried about that. There is a rudimentary form of item crafting, but the items you can get out of it will generally always be worse than a good blue or rare of the same level.

I can see why it seems that way, but the game didn't start off that complex. It appealed to a more general audience and it evolved into the grand daddy of ARPGs over a long period of time.

Like others have said it was a much more straightforward and simple game at first. Until LoD Iirc most uniques were just trash and rares dominated the game. It had more general appeal and was built so that you could just ran around, kill shit and going through the basic game. For single player gear was less important and it was about having fun and hearing a cool story. Most half assed builds got through the first difficulty (or two) and so it was successful for its wide appeal.

The focus evolved over time. Players interested in the story eventually left when it got old and online play became the focus. To me, it seemed that Blizzard noticed the online element was what remained and tweaked it in order to give people more goals (adding sets, runewords, better top tier uniques). More goals meant more playing, and the modern ARPG style of build making and farming fully took form. Those details you talk about developed over time after years of player experimenting, min-maxing, and occasional developer balancing/tweaking.

It sort of how Starcraft evolved into this monster online competitive game. It wasn't their goal to make online play the primary feature so for a while it wasn't balanced nor had real tactics developed. Over time blizzard realized the online play was catching fire so they fed it. The same with D2's complex systems.

i tried both

pod is actually a fork of resurgence, a bit trimmed of fat and stays more closely to vanilla
some nice features here and there, reworked mercs, overall pretty good.

resurgence has a bit more stuff, like different basetypes of quivers, amulets, rings, all with their own innate affixes ( like jade ring gives 30% poison resist ), reworked crafting ( you have to use special items that drop ) and it has reworked rare items so they now always roll useful stats.
Every rare armor rolls 3 resists, life and enhanced defense, every rare weapon rolls 80-90% enhanced dmg, ar, as, minimum/maximum dmg, etc. Basically every time you found a rare it was guaranteed to be good.
I found this absolutely retarded and utterly game breaking, because the game became an absolute cakewalk on all difficulties, except for act 5 which has some new overpowered monsters that one shot you.

i also tried medianxl but disliked how it makes absolutely everything tinted with random colors

People want Diablo fixed up, not Diablo with the code base remade from scratch only to achieve the same visual result. Unlock the resolution, unlock the framerate, give it raw mouse input, make it run natively on new OS void of any color output issues and bam. Age of Empires Remastered just got announced at E3 and it's a very good example of the end goal here, although I'm not asking for sprites remade for 4K.

pouncezons are fun as fuck and one of the cheapest classes to build but be careful not to jump into shit and get hit locked or swarmed try not to jump to far ahead or you will get raped and die with a mob on your body just pounce nonstop

Try to put most of your points into dexterity as a Rogue, with only enough strength to use your gear, and only enough magic to use certain utility spells like Infravision, Golem, Telekinesis, etc. Use Infravision to plan your encounters out ahead of time, and always make sure to keep your distance from enemies.
For a Sorceror, try to put ALL of your points into magic, if you can, and get Mana Shield as soon as possible. Also try to get Fireball and Chain Lightning soon as well, as these will ultimately become your main attack spells.
If you're playing Warrior, you want to put points into dexterity until you max it out (60), and then focus on strength and vitality. Mostly strength. You derive about 1 point of base damage per 5 points in strength, and this is actually more important than it seems, because of the way % enhanced damage works in D1. It's also very important that you keep an eye out for anything that gives you +% to hit or +dexterity. You're going to want at least 100% to hit and around 75 dexterity by the time you go down to the 13th floor on normal difficulty.

Any class: Look up some "OP meta build" on google and lots of "le epic runewords". Never put points into anything except vitality, because other stats are for "low-dog scrubs". Farm the same boss sixty trillion fucking times for "total swag BIS uniques" and runes for your runewords. Become a peak degenerate over the next several thousand hours. fun = 0. Don't even bother with this game if you value your life or sanity.

Summonmancers are extremely forgiving builds; some claim you can even beat hell mode naked with one but I've never tried it (that would be tedious as fuck). Google "summonmancer build diablo 2" and take your pick. The only two truly mandatory skills for this build is summon skeleton and skeleton mastery. Stat wise, all that you need is enough strength to wear gear, enough dex to max block or none at all if you're not worried about that, enough energy to where you feel comfortable or none at all if you are metagaming/have really good gear, and the rest into vitality.

basically you just hold the button and "hover" over mobs or loot or just where you want to go, and the character will automatically either attack, pickup loot/open doors/break barrels, or simply walk where the cursor is, all without needing to "reclick"

If you really want to take it to the next level, you can extract the txt files from your patch_d2.mpq, look into itemratio.txt as well as treasureclassex.txt and then calculate the probability that you will get your drop. It should work for any version, all the way down to version 1.00
