Retrowave/synthwave should have happened 10 years ago and the shape its taken is insanely embarrassing. And there was so much potential to do something great out of vaporwave and the material it draws inspiration from but it got turned into a fucking joke within a year both by its audience and by the people behind it. Once the 2020's roll around we'll all be able to move on to something else and leave these two stylistic trends to rot.

I also think it should have started in the 2000's but only some people thought of it as a joke; retrowave and vaporwave and all that is going somewhat strong on the internet. I think it might be more popular once we hit the new '20s since it will have been a longer time since that age and people will have a bigger longing to go back in time

"Vaporwave" existed long before the internet found out about it thanks to macintosh plus and whatever.
I was listening to japanese artists like dentaku (who classifies his music as "near future techno pop" but many of his stuff may very well fall into the vaporwave label) since at least 2006, he was already releasing stuff a few years before anyway.
The problem with vaporwave, retrowave, etc is that since they enclose themselves into a very limited kind of sound, all of their releases sound basically the same.
Dentaku (just to name the first example that comes to mind) has a lot of tracks that sound like vaporwave, but also did chiptune, chillout, trance, goa, gabber... the problem is the lack of variety, it leads to an artistic exhaustion

>and he's not really even vaporwave
Right he doesn't classify as that, vaporwave wasn't even a thing when he was making music, but he has a lot of tracks that sound just like vaporwave, with the same concept.
What I'm saying is that vaporwave has been a thing before "vaporwave" was conceived.
Doing ironic electronic music using samples from old songs/TV shows/games and making it sound like you're using some multimedia software from the early 90s isn't something that started in 2010, there were people doing that before, even before Dentaku.

GITS is amazing, but it's more cyberpunk than vaporwave, what with its techno soundtrack and dark, oppressive corporate aesthetics, then again, I guess vaporwave is now a way to describe 90s technology, visuals and sound.
But talking about GITS, the developers who made that game are the same ones from the Jumping Flash series, and that one I think fits more with the vaporwave criteria.

Zero Divide 2 for PS1

It's PAL only, but the first game has an NTSC version, also has some vaporwave aesthetics.

eh, maybe i'm a huge faggot but i like the entirety of the idea of vaporwave. the music is ok but it's this concept of:
>early computer art
>"exotic" eastern influences of the time (i.e., japan, hong kong)
>the height of mall culture and american economic power (pre 9/11, no worries mentality)
>obviously, synthetic instruments and mood music
>neon is used ironically from the 50s in the 80s and 90s so even more cues to american influence

I guess it's the idea of american hegemony and the japanese, and hong kong powerhouses of culture that allude to a time long past now. A time of bright colors, experiment art and music, yet without today's dread and constant connectivity of the internet.

I always felt it was a distinctly american movement or acknowledgement of a period.

this is exactly what appeals to me about it too
simultaneously an acknowledgement of the excess of the time and a distorted, nostalgic look back at when things weren't quite so shitty

on top of the eerie retro CG, which looks really cool when done well

James Ferraro's old music is better vaporwave than actual vaporwave.

vaporwave died pretty hard once floral shoppe got some notoriety, but there's still plenty of obscure shit from the early 2010s and now there are still some good artists doing similar cool stuff
retrowave and synthwave are pretty lame though imo

Yup, catchy as fuck. It also explains the music in the NES game.

As for the thread... Has no one mentioned Space Harrier, 3D World Runner, or Attack Animal Gakuen? Those are pretty much perfect fits.
