Describe your level of enthusiasm/autism for collecting. For me:

Cartridges:
>Loose, boxes and manuals blow up the price and then I feel compelled to only collect complete carts.
CDs:
>Gotta be complete, never buy loose cds and try to avoid buying without a manual.
Systems:
>Condition isn't too important as long as it works. I'll be cleaning it anyway.
Variants?
>Nope, I'm a casual collector.
How completist or selective are you?
>Pretty selective, I only buy what I know I want so I barely end up reselling games.
Game series of choice for collecting?
>Megaman, have none of them yet :/
System(s) of choice for collecting?
>NES and Gameboy, love those cartridges.
Biggest pet peeve:
>handwriting on anything

I've decided that I no longer really want to be a collector. Collecting has taken up so much of my time, money, and space.

I will still buy systems that I don't have if I can find them cheap used. And I will buy games, but only if I plan on playing them or if they are really rare and valuable. I won't buy games just to have them anymore.

Not that anon, but he might've meant collecting games that you put on an unreasonable mental backlog.

I've got dozens of old games like that, and a shit ton of stuff on my hard-drive that falls under the same problem.

Damn, OP, are you me? You pretty much described my collecting standards.

Why was it so common for people to throw out cartridge boxes and manuals? I don't get this trend.

I was thinking it was maybe a hard plastic thing (Nintendo stuff always came in cardboard), but the Sega Genesis did hard plastic too, and it seems it was just as common for that system as well.

I buy whatever as long as the price is fair. I like instruction manuals more than boxes though.

CDs:
Obviously I don't get it if it's too scratched up. Would also like to have at least the instruction manual.

Systems:
Have to be pretty nice looking. Not new, and a couple of starches are okay, but large stains bother me.

Variants:
Not sure what this question means.

Completist/selective:
Very selective. I only get shit I want to play, or games for friends who would like to play/have them.

Gamer series of choice for collecting?:
I find myself drawn toward Hudson games. Not sure why.

System(s) of choice for collecting?

Also I buy old strategy guides and such.

Variants?
>I've never really bothered with any type of variant. I hate "greatest hits" equivalents.
How completist or selective are you?
>If I discover that I'm missing only a game or two out of a series, I may try to find what I'm missing.
Game series of choice for collecting?
>I probably have more Mega Man games than any other series. The only NES one that I'm missing is Mega Man 5 (seemingly a common one not to have). I was thrilled to find Network Transmission (Gamecube, not /vr/) factory sealed black label for $30 a few months ago.
System(s) of choice for collecting?
>I have more SNES games than anything else.
Biggest pet peeve:
>Misrepresentation of condition or edition. This includes things like showing a picture of a "black label" version when the game for sale is a "greatest hits" version and listing something as NEW when the description says "barely used" or "opened just to test" or some other bullshit. Counterfeits would also fall under that second category, although that's certainly more serious.

I've been playing games since 1979 and had never really thought of myself as a collector. I just realized one day that I had a substantial collection of games in excellent condition (Thanks, OCD!). I never buy anything unless I have the intention of playing it, although I have more money than time these days.

>None in particular.
System(s) of choice for collecting?

CDs:
>As complete as possible, nothing without an original box.

Systems:
>I love boxes but the most important is it must look good, no broken part or anything unless I modded for some reason but then again I would buy another one

Variants?
>On console yes, like the genesis 1 2 and 3, any smaller version or even different color version... On cartridge, only of game I intensly collect like I would buy american and japanese cartridges of the same megaman game, or like X3 on saturn and snes...

How completist or selective are you?
>I got different priorities on different consoles, but overall I try to get as many good to passable game on everything.

Incredibly completist. I'll continue to buy something until I have the entire collection

>Just the case is fine. Manuals are nice. Unfortunately, my Cubivore doesn't have a case, and neither does my Pikmin 2.
Systems:
>I have years of experience fixing systems which are broken. No biggie, but I like to consolidate. Having a backwards compatible PS3 was a great purchase. Soon, a CDX.
Variants?
>No, no, unless the game is wildly different say for Shadowrun on SNES and GEN and Splinter Cell Double Agent on Xbox and 360.
How completist or selective are you?
>I have a list which I've compiled.. I don't need all the games for a system, that's just a waste of space and effort, honestly.
Game series of choice for collecting?
>Currently I'm going through Shin Megami Tensei, as I have just finished Zelda and Metroid. I've never played a Link to the Past which I had purchased tonight, but hopefully next week I'll have completed it.
System(s) of choice for collecting?
>Attempting to work through my PS2 and DS sets. My SNES set is mostly repros which I might end up making for myself. I've also been working a bit at the PSX.
Biggest pet peeve:
>Resellers. Just the other day a guy swooped down and picked up copies of Mario RPG, Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger on Craigslist only to resell the copies for $60 apiece. The listing had only been up a few hours before he had placed his own. This type of behavior is everywhere. All those inflated BIN auctions destroy the market. Look at Earthbound. Look at Metal Warriors. You can see it in action tonight with Baten Kaitos Origins, if you watch the next few months the price will escalate to $50 range.

I don't collect to collect. I collect to play, and so that I don't have to pay five times as much a year down the road.

>Seriously though, if you are happy with emulation, go for it. I tried to fool myself for years that emulation was just fine. It’s not. I need the original controllers, the original console, the whole deal. And it’s not entirely nostalgia. Almost no emulators (with the exception of the Wii’s Virtual Console) output games at their proper resolution. This causes games to have a “flickering” effect around the edges of the sprites. If it doesn’t flicker, it’s usually because a horrible blurring filter is put on the image.
>Also, some consoles aren’t exactly emulated perfectly. You’d be surprised at how inaccurate the Super Nintendo emulators are for sound.
>Finally, it’s the aesthetic as well. If you have some friends over, who is going to look at your HTPC and say “hey, load up some ROMs and let’s play Anticipation on the NES!” Won’t happen. But have them step one foot in your goony hovel full of retro consoles and you will instantly be met with “hey, put that cartridge in and let’s play Anticipation on the NES!”

>I usually use UGCs to case my carts, so it doesn't matter anyway. I do buy CIB if it's cheap though.
CDs:
>Best be fucking complete. I'm not using a damn spindle
Systems:
>I haven't really thought about it, but I suppose it just needs to be in working order. Some fixing is tolerable.
Variants?
>Only variants I have are both SNES and SFC copies for a few games that I really, really like. If Pokemon counts then I suppose both versions of each game as well.
How completist or selective are you?
>Not much of a completist at all. Only series I have a complete collection of is Mario Party, and that's only because they were all easy to get.
Game series of choice for collecting?
>Was Pokemon, now getting into Castlevania. Games made by Rare as well.
System(s) of choice for collecting?

>Don't mind buying loose, because I have boxes for each system I collect for.
CDs:
>Got to be at least boxed. Manuals aren't always essential, but a nice bonus. That said, if it's a game that requires the manual due to a copy protection measure or whatever, and the manual's not included... yeah, you get the idea.
Systems:
>Boxes aren't essential, but are appreciated. Other than that, as long as the system works and doesn't have any major cosmetic or structural issues, it's fair game to me.
Variants?
>Nope. That said, if it's a game with major regional differences (IE - Magical Hat Bouken / Decap Attack); I like to have the different versions.
How completist or selective are you?
>I only "collect" the games I want to play. I don't see the point in having a complete set of games that never get used or, worse still, get encased in carbonite and used as trophies on a forum.
Game series of choice for collecting?
>Sonic the Hedgehog. A bad choice considering the rule of averages, but hey, the furry faggot basically defines the era I grew up in. Contrary to my above statement - I collect Japanese versions of the Sonic games as well as the European versions, though that's more because the box-art and manuals are lovely to look at and skim through.
System(s) of choice for collecting?
>Mostly Sega systems - Master System, Mega Drive, Saturn, Dreamcast and Game Gear in particular. That said, I dabble in just about every system, and recently bought the rather fantastic Neo-Geo Pocket Colour.
Biggest pet peeve:
>So many ways I could answer this - the VGA, people who think RETRO = BIGBUX, people who collect because it's trendy to own retro games, resellers who artificially inflate prices of big name games... also this faggot >>413336 and everybody who shares his mentality.

Semantics won't change the fact that you get a bigger dollar amount from vintage titles.

I know for a fact that my $50 Panzer Dragoon Saga is worth more than $50 now. Try nabbing a sealed FF7 first run release for the same price as retail (even compensating for inflation).

Yeah...I didn't think so.
