I feel like playing Chrono Trigger again, which retranslation project is the best? I heard the DS version has best translation overall but I want to play it on a SNES for nostalgia reasons.

Why don't you want to play the SNES translation?

I read that the official translation censored a bunch of stuff like religious references and alcohol or changed a lot of names and added confusing dialogue (from what I can remember from the top of my mind is Melchior's line: "Someone close to you is in grave danger, find that person, fast.") Also Frog's annoying manner of speaking that never existed in the japanese version.

Here are two of the more known fantranslations of it. The first is by Chrono Compendium, the main chrono series fansite. The second is a reworking of the CC fantranslation.

Honestly though I say just go with the ds version. The bonus content added to it is kind of weak but its still nice and the translation is good.

Not him but while fairly decent there are some really weird inconsistencies. Things like Frog being the only one in his time period to have the "ye old English" style if speaking being one of the bigger ones.

It isn't terrible, it's no Breath of Fire II, but it does have weird lines. That one line "Someone close to you is in grave danger, find that person, fast." is pretty infamous for how many insane theories it caused, that single line has entire articles on it.

Honestly, just play the SNES or DS versions - don't bother with the fan-translations because it's just the usual autism-fest you aways get with 'retranslations'. I believe there's a de-censor patch or two you can use to cover that part of it at least.

>Things like Frog being the only one in his time period to have the "ye old English" style if speaking being one of the bigger ones.

Am I the only person who was never bothered by this? I just thought he was a weirdo obsessed with chivalry and trying to imitate a sort of proud knight of old when everybody else had moved on. I love Frog but he is a little flat in the DS version.

No, it's honestly stupid and he sounds so much better in the ds version. I would get it if every mone in 600 A.D. spoke that way, it would be annoying to read but make sense, but having only Frog do it is just shitty. Honestly Woolsey was often given shitty time schedules, I think he had only a month to do CT. For the time is was fine but the ds translation is much better with only a few things removed like Ayla's comment to Marle about her breasts

The one where you learn Japanese and play the original release as the Kamis intended.

Otherwise just pop in the DS release. It's still a little silly but not as dumbed down as the Woolsey one, it brings over one or two more risqué lines.

This gave me so much grief when I was a kid. I had no fucking clue what this was supposed to reference. I remember going to Chrono's house, Lucca's house, Marle's castle, etc. Such a terrible misdirect.
