System Shock 1. I only played it for the first time maybe two years ago and it instantly rose to my second-favorite game of all time, only losing to Doom on the basis of mod support.

I never had a gameboy as a kid and I'd never given the games outside Pokemon much thought but I've started going through them and holy fuck there are some classics.

Grew up with only consoles, so I've only recently discovered the amazing world of retro PC games.

I fucking love Doom, Quake, HoMM3, RCT2, etc.

As a plus to this I have decades worth of user content made for the games to enjoy. Especially for Doom and Quake.

>ugly to look at
Funny one of the things I like about it is that it looks the best on modern screens. It was horrible to play on original GBA, which HoD and AoS solved for that. But if you play them on something with a decent screen CotM looks amazing and the others look super garish.

Soundtrack isn't as great I'll give you that, AoS Clockwork Tower theme is awesome. But it being not a complete walk in the park far from makes up for it. As for card RNG, AoS's soul hunting felt way more gindy.

This is the price we all paid for the launch GBA's garbage screen. So many games look like shit emulated because of the colors. Some emulators have color filters to fix it, at the very least.

O actually discovered most of the retro games I like when I was older though. Maybe not an adult but from 15 onward. Kind of started with the NES games you could dig up in the Gamecube version of Animal Crossing, I made a game room in the basement and spent weeks trying to beat Mario, Zelda, and Punch-Out, and playing some of the other little blackbox games too. A friend also unlocked Metroid in Metroid Prime, another retro game that sucked away the hours until I beat it.

When the Wii came out I binged on the virtual console, if it wasn't for all the retro I played for the first time I would have been disappointed in that system. Eventually soft modded it and it was the best decision ever.

I guess if we're giving specific examples, my most recent discovery is Guardian Legend.

I'm 30 and I beat Baldur's Gate when I was 13. It was and still is one of my favorite games so I'm assuming that you're much younger than me. The game had good graphics at the time and wasn't all that challenging by 90s PC RPG standards. The Ultima and Wizardry series was a lot more difficult, in my opinion.
