I got my ass kicked in every game I played until I was like 9, I was intimately familiar with the first two to three stages in every game I played.

The first game I ever beat without some kind of warp zone was Donkey Kong Country and I rejoiced with every ounce of autistic fury that I had because that was a long and bumpy road.

I actually never "raged" at a game until after then, I had no concept of "beating" a game.

>> No.4044384

>>4044325
that also applies to almost every encounter in the last few areas of the game if you aren't overleveled like the game expects you to be. enemies get the initiative and if they use the right status effects then you just lose. sure, the game lets you retry any battle, but it's still dumb.

the defend mechanic was neat though; i'd like to see that in an actually decent game. pity it's only necessary in ffmq with min-level runs, which are super mega dumb.

7th Saga has a Defend option during combat, but that game is hard as shit. It's entirely possible and quite likely that you will die during your first encounter outside the starting town if you meet up with a Wyvern at all. The Hermits though aren't hard at all. Not to mention there's a boss that is essentially one huge reason to never grind in the game, as he levels up with you.

so i looked it up, and it seems like it's focus attack + defend all-in-one. wouldn't that just slow down the game?

ffmq's is completely different. it's simply damage-reduction if done on yourself but it's an uber-cover if done on your teammate (teammate takes zero damage and you don't take any additional damage from attacks that would have hit you both). gives you a surefire way to get off healing so variable turn order doesn't screw you over. so, a game can retain that element of uncertainty with turn order and put you up against bosses that can two-shot you without it ever being bs. it's bs in ffmq low-level runs because the game shits the bed with status effects, but it could allow for nail-biting-yet-fair battles in a well-designed game.

I don't think the watch letsplayers because they suck, most letsplayers suck too. If anything they think sucking at the games is like some kind of funny meme,

They watch lets players because they're popular and they think their weird over reactions are funny.

They could also watch lets plays because they can't afford the game themselves or to see if it's any good. A shitty way of guaging weather or not a game is good would to be watching the fucking game grumps play it, but what can you do, kids don't really have good judgement.

I....I actually got stuck on mystic quest the first time I played it.

I rented it for a weekend when I was in middle school (or...maybe late grade-school? not sure), so I only got to play it for a few days, but I distinctly remember getting stuck on a specific puzzle in that tower in the middle of the map. It involved pushing a pillar across the floor and then re-entering from another level and use it to leap across a gap. Thing is, I assumed that the pillar would reset it's position as soon as a I left the floor (like most objects do), so I bent my brain for hours trying to figure out an (obviously impossible) method to get across without moving to a different floor......far more hours than I played prior to that specific puzzle, combined. It was a weekend wasted.

...The next time I rented it, my younger brother suggested that I just try moving the pillar anyways. I called him a moron and then promptly moved the pillar as soon as he left the room.

I went on to beat the remainder of the game that weekend (which actually isn't that much of a feat. It's not that long).
