Are we sure that's true? There's the bigass elevator and the pyramid shape when it's all still underwater. Shadow does imply that it's rather tall, not long.

The guy who designed that sprite did an okay job, but it would've been more coherent with smarter shadow placement. Or somebody else, along the way, could've maybe noticed that it's hard to tell, and clarify what exactly it is in the dialog with Schala or some shit.

Might not have always been the case, I forget when exactly I picked up my copy (probably '05 or something), but it definitely only had a tiny BW manual, the strategy guides, a tech tree chart, and a free trial for world of warcraft.

The structure is the same, where the overall goal is to collect all the pokemon and also defeat all the gym leaders (Sun & Moon kind of changed that though) but the gameplay has had some major changes.

The most obvious examples I can think of are in Gen 2 where the Special stat was split into Special Attack and Special Defense, and then Gen 4 where the distinction of Physical or Special attack was based on what the move itself was rather than its elemental type, which is pretty huge. Double battles and triple battles are also a pretty unique addition. Pokemon also have different "abilities" now separate from their stats that can hugely affect their play styles. Then other features like the Battle Tower where you can infinitely battle trainers post-game with equal leveled teams, pokemon breeding, pokemon natures and re-worked IV/EV stat systems, the introduction of held items, the introduction of berries and being able to plant and farm them, pokeballs that have different capture rates depending on how you use them and also have different colors and designs that can be seen when you send out a pokemon you captured in one, the addition of rare "shiny" pokemon you can encounter that have alternate colors, etc

The series has evolved quite a bit from gen 1.

The basic concept of the main series games hasn't changed. There's no reason to fundementally change it and they have several spin-off series for when they want to make a new kind of game anyway. The gameplay in gen 1 vs the gameplay now is like the difference between rock n roll from the 1950s and rock n roll from every successive decade. It's based on the same foundation but re-worked and made more complex. The way a pokemon battle works in the most recent games, especially in the meta, is miles away from how it played in gen 1.

Pokemon stopped feeling like a 90's JRPG with Sun and Moon but it only started feeling like an early 2000's JRPG. I'm so tired of the same thing happening but a little remixed in every game. And it looks like they're about to make that very literal shortly.

I might just be just out of touch, I guess.

I recognize that to someone who stuck with the series over the years these changes may feel like some genuine, big improvements (especially since they handle the gameplay so conservatively to begin with). I never played through anything beyond Gen 2 because I felt like they just kept shoveling out new ugly Pokemans so you could catch them all™. Maybe it's because I subconsciously feel my memories of Gen 1 devaluated as the original 151 now make up only a fraction of the pantheon in newer Gens, whereas they used to be all there was (and to my emotionally biased heart, they still are). Observing the development of the games from the outside from that point on may only have furthered my prejudices, I guess the games simply did not develop the way I hoped they would. I must be getting old.

I mean, the games still sell really well and you're not the only one who is still with the franchise, so Nintendo/Gamefreak must be on about something. Probably the fans would have shunned an entry that deviated too much from what they were used to...

Ah, well. There's no harm in people being happy with their product and having fun playing. Carry on.

More creativity in the stories would be nice, yeah. As far as gameplay goes though, given that they can't really make huge changes to the main series without people complaining that it's not a pokemon game anymore, the changes they do bring with each generation add a lot to the gameplay.

>>4046854

I played gen 1 and 2, then later I played Platinum, X, and Sun/Moon. When you play the later games and then go back and try to play gen 1, it feels so primitive. On the surface it might look like the games haven't changed much, but the additional gameplay mechanics and all the refining and expanding on of earlier features are night and day.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V-Ju2aR9SI

This is about as new and different as you can get with the game without it just being a different game altogether. 3 pokemon on each team fighting at the same time, having been bred and trained in specific ways that give much more control over what role they play on the team, making use of weather conditions and unique pokemon-specific abilities for synergy, holding items that either activate and give bonuses during the battle, give passive bonuses to stats, or increase the duration of status moves, in a battle where the strategy revolves having your main support pokemon reverse the priority of the speed bracket. I mean shit, it's pretty damn different.

That's a risk they need to take for the series to grow. Zelda finally stepped into the modern age and there's plenty of people who are too attached to the old formula pissing and moaning about the lack of traditional elements, and yet this has been the most successful Zelda in years.

Obviously Pokemon doesn't need to do this, because it has it's fan\s by the balls. There's an alarming number of people who buy both versions of each game even though there's no real reason to, and people are still drawn to that dumb anime even though it's more formulaic than the games at this point and refuses to break the status quo. Pokemon doesn't NEED to change to be successful.

But I'm not going to listen to anyone saying that Pokemon is taking "leaps and bounds" in the games because it hasn't.

I didn't use the phrase you're quoting but there's clearly a big difference in the way the games play now compared to gen 1 or 2. I've given a list of major changes and linked a video of a prime example of it. You should be able to agree at this point. It's like saying Mario games have been the same thing from Super Mario Bros to Mario Galaxy, or that there's no big difference between Shogun: Total War vs. Warhammer: Total War. They're series that stick to their core design but the features evolve and give a different experience.

Yeah no shit, that's what happens when you make very small incremental improvements to the gameplay over the course of 20 years. Like I said, Pokemon has evolved, but it's still only at the level of an early 2000's RPG after years of being a 90's RPG.

I just don't think they've done enough to deserve the amount of praise that they get, especially since a lot of Pokemon players I know give other series shit for not evolving enough

It just gets under my skin when people pretend Pokemon has grown significantly as a series just because they reskinned gyms and HMs or some shit like that.

It may as well be a bootleg since it's not Japanese. Nintendo doesn't even acknowledge actually good shit that was produced for other countries, like the Legend of Zelda artwork by Ketsuya Terada, may be from a Japanese artist, but it only existed so americans wouldn't look think they were playing a babby game.

That's nonsense. NES sprites could only be 8x8 or 8x16, which means that every single Mario sprite actually took up multiple "hardware" sprites at once that all moved at the same time to look like one big one. You could very easily just layer yet another sprite on top of those that added additional colors, and that's actually precisely what Mega Man did. Most devs were just lazy.

That picture is wrong and it's a common misconception about MM. This particular frame of Mega Man isn't "2 sprites", it's 9 sprites.
Out of those, 8 use the first palette (blue), and 1 use the white/beige palette

Also
>You could very easily just layer yet another sprite on top of those that added additional colors

The more sprites you use, the quicker you hit the "8 sprites per scanline" limit.
Considering that a sprite is 8*8 pixels that limit is quickly reached, so I wouldn't call it lazyness.

Gen 1 remains an odd gen for me due to all the sprites being weird for a kid like me.

I still can't get it into my head that the ledges are ledges. I just sort of see them as a brown barrier. All the rocks that block paths confused me as well. In game they must be fucking huge since you can't pass them, but to me they just look like big marshmellows. The bushes as well. They're everywhere and look like a blob of green, but they're meant to represent a bush or some sort of tree. Obviously there's the guard who everyone thought was a british guard.

I still don't know what these lines are meant to represent.

I feel in terms of aesthetics and atmosphere Pokemon has deviated too much from what it used to be.

Also a big part of the old Pokemon was exploring the overworld and having a hard time figuring out what to do next and having to ask a buddy where to go or how to get out of a dungeon. With the new ones there's too much hand holding, scripted events, pointless attractions that water down the experience.

The core game hasn't changed much but it's like playing the same sport with whole new set of people you don't recognize, it's just not the same anymore.

The core progression was always pretty linear - follow a route, hit a city, fight the gym, go to the next route, maybe stick the odd additional dungeon or plot event in once in a while - but a lot of the optional areas were pretty satisfying as far as difficulty went. Compare the Sky Pillar from Ruby and Sapphire to the Sky Pillar in their 3DS remakes - the original was 10-ish floors of tough Pokemon, boulder and bike puzzles, whereas the one in the remakes is literally just five floors of exposition about some ancient dragon people or some shit with no puzzles or battles. This only really started to be a problem with the 3DS games, though.

This couldn't have been a mistake. They had to code unique color in the palette that's not used anywhere else, and Link's sprite ALREADY HAS YELLOW ON IT. If they wanted his hair to be blonde, it would actually use LESS colors than pink hair because they would be able to use yellow from his belt, or brown from his sleeves - but the thing is, green and pink make a nice color scheme together, so they didn't give a fuck and made it intentionally pink.

I could wax poetic about how supersaturated color makes link stand out, or how his sprite includes cyan, yellow and magenta - three basic pigment colors... But really, I can't imagine this being a mistake.

What you're both forgetting, and the reason that noone does it, is that, wait for it...
NES can have only 8 palettes on screen. Four background palettes, four sprite palettes. That Megaman face? That cost them an entire new sprite palette to draw it, which is why they also use these beige palette for energy capsule powerup, and for your lifebar.

If they gave Mario gloves, they would've had to sacrifice a sprite palette that could be used for unique enemies.
Ever noticed how Mario enemies are brilliantly colorful - reg, green, brown, black etc - while Megaman enemies are mostly blue and orange with thick black outlines? That's part of the reason, Mario had one extra sprite palette on-screen to work with.

Kids don't know a lot about literature and are incredibly impressionable. You're handing them a 4 page pamphlet with some books that paid their way to be advertised in it and, not knowing better, they eat it up. You think any kid would have read "Merry Christmas, Miss McConnell" if it hadn't been plastered on the front page? Some garbage like that isn't what kids should be reading, but they're more or less "told to" (by being given barely any other options) so the publisher can make a profit off them.

When you work on PRE modern computer games, you need a artist to draw/clay/figma/origami stuff, so you get good design referances, and can improve design before burning in the first sets of ROM or make the first set of sprites for playtesting.
Because if you make something for playtesting, there is a good chance you will keep it for the final game: So you want final art to enter the pipeline as early as possible.
Otherwise you get things like Symphony of the Night's pause screen, which is a color set from the beta stage, instead of being decorated in some manner. But at the least they where lucky on color palette.

A few things were at play here. 8-year-old me had only played Kirby's Dreamland before this game, and maybe some Crystal Shards at the local McDonald's (blast from the past right there). There was no art of Mr. Frosty in the manual, he is never mentioned by name anywhere in the game, and appears only in a single water level:

> 0:40
> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0x6fg9L3Edg

His yawning turns and the constant horizontal flipping after Kirby takes the star don't really convey the effect of someone swimming ahead of you, a bit closer to flying. Also take into account the danger of dying in three seconds if you touch the water - not much time to get a good look at that sprite as you physically tilt the GameBoy all over the place in a scramble to safety.

And that's how this misunderstanding came about. No context to their presence in the game, no name to put to their odd sprite, all during a frantic struggle to not drown. It would be many years before I even knew who or what Mr. Frosty was.
