Hey /vr/, I've been looking into obscure fighting games and ran into the Asuka 120% Burning games. Any particular one better than the rest? Any I should avoid?

I'm also open to other similar recommendations.

The older versions of the game use different sprite art, unfortunately I was never able to find a .bin .cue download with the music tracks intact. Just a bit of trivia.

Also the game is absolutely broken garbage, nobody plays it seriously. It's only good for doing stupid MvC style dashing air combos

The 'poverty' fighter scene is great for its search for little known games with fun mechanics, or broken games with amusing quirks. There's even a scene for some, like Fighters History or Jackie Chan's Fists of Fire.

Asuka 120% is a funass game though - I heard that French Bread's early fighters set out to replicate Asuka's gameplay with VN chars, which eventually led to the Melty Blood games. Asuka does play incredibly similarly - LMH 3 button control, super versions of standard moves, a 'heat' mode when your gauge hits 120% and moves that can only be done then, and rush/launcher style gameplay. I'd love to play other Asuka games than FINAL, but I dig its crazy noodlelimbed sprites with thicc shoes/fists. Very Sunsoft/Treasure.

Yeah, Family Soft/Fill-in-Cafe are an interesting bunch. I know there's a guy in there in charge of a lot of their more interesting fighting-based games who hooked up with Treasure a bunch - which makes sense given Panzer Bandit's similarity to Guardian Heroes, and the pre-PS1 versions of Mad Stalker being ridiculously on-point mechanically. Slick as hell comboing/special move cancelling in that.

Most of their early games have ridiculously good soundtracks by Keishi Yonao too which it's fun to see evolve as remakes happen - Asuka and Mad Stalker moved from 16 to 32 bit, as did their soundtracks. Still partial to their original chiptunes though.

Asuka 120% BURNING Fest. (FM Towns and X68000) - The debut title of the series. Has some of the smallest sprites in fighting game history and plays 16-bit-esque chiptune music. The X68000 version has superior fonts compared to the FM Towns version's.

Asuka 120% Excellent BURNING Fest. (FM Towns) - Taller sprites + redbook music in CD format.

Asuka 120% Maxima BURNING Fest. (PC-Engine CD-ROM2 / TurboGrafx-CD) - First console release. Sprites are taller than original game's, but not as tall as FM Towns Excellent's. Has different redbook music compared to FM Towns Excellent's, and has more characters.

Asuka 120% Special BURNING Fest. (PS1) - First PS1 release. Has an enhanced version of the Maxima's intro, and some of its other sprites, but completely different fighting sprites and soundtrack.

Asuka 120% Excellent BURNING Fest. (PS1) - Not to be confused with FM Towns Excellent. PS1 Excellent is a revision of Special. Has some interesting features in its 'Story Mode'.

Asuka 120% Limited BURNING Fest. (Saturn) - First and only official Saturn release, as well as the final official release developed by Fill-in-Cafe before their bankruptcy. Has the largest sprites in the series, has the same soundtrack as Special and Excellent, and has more characters.

Asuka 120% LimitOver BURNING Fest. (Saturn) - Unofficial revision patch of Limited, created by Fill-in-Cafe staff.

Asuka 120% Final BURNING Fest. (PS1) - Developed by SUCCESS, who also developed the SNES version of Datam Polystar's Makeruna! Makendo 2, while Fill-in-Cafe developed the PS1 version of it. Final is a revision of Limited.

Asuka 120% Return BURNING Fest. (Windows PCs) - Port and minor upgrade of Final.
