GAUNTLET WIKI: http://vgauntlet.wikia.com/wiki//v/_Gauntlet_Wiki

Good evening, /vr/others! Welcome to the Retro Game Gauntlet!

Start at NES, and work through in the following order:

NES
SNES
GB/GBC OR Sega Game Gear
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA OR Sega Master System
Commodore 64 OR Commodore Amiga
Playstation 1 OR Nintendo 64

Select your system here:
http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html

You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator:

Looked online for a manual. Realized I was using an outdated, inferior translation patch. Fortunately, I can just copy over my password.

Unfortunately, the password is long as shit, and it doesn't let me keep my items. Oh well, they weren't that good anyway. I'm early in the game, and I got to keep my EXP.

There. Doesn't that title screen look better?

I opened up the Japanese ROM and saw that the title was in Japanese characters, so the translation team responsible for "Valecule" has to be seriously retarded.

I rolled Esper Dreams 2. Seems like a pretty cool action RPG game so far. Story-wise it's kinda like Earthbound meets the Pagemaster; a boy with ESP has to go into magical book worlds.

The first world is a little port town that's overrun by monsters. In the field you walk on a grid, but when you bump into the monster footprints moving around the screen you get transported to a battle field to fight them.

I currently have Lisa following me. She walks around the battlefield and throws knives in four direction, and sometimes she sings and causes all the enemies to freeze in place.

Died in THE FIRST FUCKING ROOM.

My fucking crown disappeared right away, and I died before I realized what was happening.

Why did my crown disappear? I don't fucking know. I've had crowns for way longer and they were fine, so either an enemy stole it from me, or the crown breaks at random. Thanks, Namco!

If you don't have a crown and a cape, you're FUCKED. The enemies will gang rape you to death in an instant without that defensive bonus.

Fuck this game with the fury of a thousand suns.

This seems like a pretty interesting game so far. There doesn't appear to be any experience or a level system, but I can get different animal suits by beating up certain animals which increase my stats. But I can only change outfits in a changing room, and if the suit doesn't fit me (my character wears a size M) I have to go to a tailor to get it fitted.

Also, the currency is candies.

So turns out I've gotta go underwater to find the Light, but I also need a scuba suit. I saw one at Lisa's friend Wendy's house earlier, so I go back... And she's gone and locked the door. I had to backtrack to the docks to get the key off her.

Once I got the scuba gear, the town went dark and got infested with monsters. I headed back to the dock and went underwater... Somehow Lisa can follow be despite there only being one scuba suit, but I'm not complaining since she comes in handy. Unfortunately there are some enemies that hide in their shells and become invulnerable and she can sing and freeze them like that for a few seconds which gets a bit irritating.

I explored underwater a bit, plundered some treasure and found the way to get the Light back... But there were actually two entrances into the water at the docks, leading to different areas. I decided to investigate the other one before advancing.

I came across some more gold and a Bazooka weapon. It's more powerful and has a longer range than my crossbow, but it only allows one projectile on-screen at a time so if I miss, there's quite a bit of downtime before I can fire again.

I also found a coral reef with a herb and an ominous message. After I get the Light back and have this Baku guy power it up again, it looks like I'm going to have to return there to find this "Seadra" thing. I smell a boss coming.

Every few hits he disappears and tries to hit me with a wave that covers the whole screen, but it's easy to dodge unless you're unlucky and his body gets in the way.

This old geezer is pretty useful. He blows a whistle to freeze enemies like Lisa's singing does and he throws an endless supply of hats at nearby enemies. If he wanders close to someone he'll essentially barrage them with hats until they die or get away.

I save the arms dealer and buy some better armour and some mines from him. The mines are very powerful but they're short range, so you need to be pretty careful with them. I also got the "Esper Eye" that lets me see invisible enemies, making those little blue buggers less of a headache.

The train stops at Station One, which is also crawling with monsters. We meet the boss, who claims that all this trouble is because of a "Rikki", an evil prehistoric rabbit that wants to use the space-and-time-travelling train to save his species from extinction, which I take it is a bad thing.

Welcome to the Retro Game Gauntlet, gentlemen.

Start at NES, and work through in the following order:
NES
SNES
GB/GBC
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA
Commodore 64
Playstation 1

You have three days to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length).

Select your system here:
http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html

You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator:
http://s3kr.it/systems/

Rules:
1) Savestates are allowed ONLY for the purpose of taking screenshots and ONLY if your emulator/game in question does not have a pause function.
2) Rerolls are allowed under the following conditions:
-The game you get requires some sort of hardware functionality that cannot be accurately emulated to complete (eg, Boktai)
-The game would otherwise require cheats, hacks, or alteration of the software to complete due to a bug (eg, Cheetahmen II)
For games that have a high score or no end, the rule is
>if no high score has been established, set a goal and beat it
>if you.re playing something another anon already has a high score on, beat their high score
>if you are playing extended rpgs/pokemon/whatever you get a week (Depending on the game: needs to be asked in thread)

NEW RULES/GUIDELINES TO POSTING IN THE GAUNTLET THREADS:

-Do not post screenshots every other screen, make them few and meaningful
-Do not start a new thread before current one bump limit is exceeded

You basically got just as far as I did with the game before I gave up.
On strategywiki there was a "how to play" page (http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Valkyrie_no_Bouken/How_to_play)), which should be fine to read without looking at the walkthrough.

>Ugh, a giant rabbit attacked me...

That's not something I'd be willing to admit, personally...

After chasing Rikki around the train a bit (and fighting lots of those damn blue chocobo things) he starts detatching the cars. There's also two dark rooms that, once illuminated, reveal all these glass boxes with... things inside them.

Some explosions later and the boxes are gone, with a new enemy type emerging from the: the chameleons. They teleport around the battlefield, firing spread shots and trying to hit you with their tongues. They seemed a bit annoying at first, but then I realise if I just placed a mine on top of where they are teleporting to, the mine itself will keep hurting them until they die almost instantly.

I meet a shadowy figure who's probably a foreshadowing of the final boss and then I have to jump on the express train after stopping at Station One again.

A short train ride later and we're at the next station. I buy an Angel Tear (dunno what it does) and some Devil's Perfume (apparently Rikki hates it) and catch up to the train. Then it's VS Rikki in a random starfield that appears out of nowhere. He looks a lot cuter than his field sprite suggested...

Rikki's main tactics are throwing explosive carrots at you, teleporting and stopping time, at which point he will attack you while you're defenseless. He also surrounds you with a wall of weird clock parts so even once you're out of the time-stop, you're still stuck in place... Unless you blow yourself out with mines.

Yeah, I found out those craters the mines make aren't just for show and can be used to destroy barriers. Also I've noticed that you can sometimes randomly uncover a red chest on the battlefield with them that has 500 gold in it. Quite handy.

Rikki is trickier than the Seadra, but he went down much quicker; I got him stuck in a pattern where I lay a mine on him, then he hopped towards me, then I lay another mine on him. After doing that for only a few seconds I had him beat.

So the passengers are saved, Rikki's evil rabbit race doesn't get resurrected and I've finished another level.

I said I'd pick this up tomorrow, but I decided to carry on for a bit and before I knew it I had completed another world.

The 4th (I can't go to the 3rd one... yet) is a factory level where all the villagers are living screws and screwdrivers. It's also where the difficulty ramps up quite a bit. It's more maze-like and takes a long time to get from point A to point B compared to the last two levels. The encounters are a lot more difficult too, as they consist of springs that bounce around the field, turrets on wheels that are speedy and quite hard to catch and magnets that, when you walk in between two of them, they magnetize towards each other and crush you.

Screwy is my partner. He (she? I dunno) is a bit less useful than Aram was. He throws a slow-moving homing projectile that cuts down an enemy's speed and can bounce around the room wildly to attack.

The level became a lot easier once I bought the flamethrower weapon. It's got a fast firing rate, can stun enemies perpetually as long as you keep it on them and makes short work of them at close range. Sadly the developers must have realised how powerful the gun was, so there's a section in this level where its power gets severely nerfed as long as you're there.

After finding a Hyper Circuit (that took a long time because of how long it takes to get around the level and required a lot of trial and error) a smithy made me a Thunder Gun. It's got a wider and longer range than the flamethrower, but it's significantly less powerful and has a habit of dodging smaller enemies due to its wave pattern.

...Am I getting too in-depth in some of these replies?

With the Thunder Gun, I head off to face the boss who has three pink screwdrivers in his captivity. The Metal God is the hardest boss so far, even after maxing out my level due to the amount of running back and forth I did. If you stand in front of him he fires dual lasers, and if he targets you with that crosshair he launches a pair of missiles with a wide explosion radius.

He's also the first boss so far to have more than one form; he removes the blue shields on his side and they hover at the edges of the screen, firing projectiles at you if you move parallel to them.

It was a close call (mostly because I stood there like an idiot and let him hit me a lot) but I eventually brought him down. And there was much rejoicing.

I also was told that the smithy could make me some "Ultimate Armor" if I brought him four rocks from each book world. I backtracked to the first and second worlds to have a look for them, and thankfully they weren't too hard to find; I talked to the townspeople to try and get hints, but instead one of them offered to trade me an object from another book world for their rock. I guess once I finish the 5th book world, finding the remaining two won't be too difficult.

Oh yeah, and what about the 3rd world? Turns out someone else finished it. Yep, some guy is standing in front of it and tells you that he's dealt with the problem, then gives you the ring that you need and some armor to boot. Allegedly this is the protagonist of the first Esper Dreams games. Quite an odd in-joke...

Managed to beat this guy last night. After reading his stats in the instruction booklet (anything that would be packaged with the game is fair to use), I realized why he was so tough. 3rd fastest serve of the game, and high stats across the board. After going to another town to upgrade my gear, I had to pretty much trick him into bad shots to win, and pray he faulted on his serve because I couldn't return most of them and his second serves were more cautious, but still faster than most of the NPC's I've faced so far.

For my troubles,I get a pearl. Onwards to reclaim this land from the clutches of the evil tennis King

Now I'm onto the final level (although there's probably going to be something after this one, I'd assume). Yeah, I picked it up in the factory world. Completely annihilated most of the enemies there, except one section where I think the developers realised how easy it made things and had its power severely nerfed.

>>411391
I bought some new armour and a "Stardust Gun" at the shop. The Stardust gun has a good range and is extremely powerful, but the shots are kind of slow moving and you can only have one of them on-screen at a time. It's kind of like a souped up version of the Bazooka I got in the first level.

Starry is a pretty cool companion to have around. He will periodically summon shooting stars that cover the whole screen and will orbit around you like a shield. Both of these attacks aren't very damaging, but they're useful for keeping enemies in place with their hitstun and letting you line up your Stardust shots easier.

This level is probably the most complex yet. The factory was big and a bit confusing, but this one is full of branching paths and interchangable corridors so it's hard to keep track of where you are. The enemies do a lot of damage and some of them can be a real bitch to avoid, so even at max level they drain my health like crazy if I'm not careful.

I find Kihachi, the guy with the mirror, but he falls down a hole and needs a rope ladder to get back out. Luckily I bumped into a guy earlier who had one just conveniently sitting next to him, so I backtrack (and get lost a lot), grab it and go save the shmuck... Only for him to run away with the mirror anyway. I'm starting to hate this guy.

After chasing Kihachi to the summit he goes and hands over the mirror to Raijin and Fuujin. Then I'm sent on a rather annoying fetch-quest of sorts: I consult the head priest who tells me to go see the old man Sanpe, and then Sanpe tells me to meet the owl Gorosuke. I meet with the creepy looking bird and he gives me an item to use at a special gate that will lead the way to the castle in the heavens.

The game actually has an option to speed itself up, so that made walking around so much a lot easier. Unfortunately it speeds up the enemies in encounters too, but if you're familiar with their patterns (or don't mind brute-forcing your way through) it isn't too difficult.

I climb the castle (it's a bit of a maze, but I actually found the correct route on my first try completely by accident... it wasn't so easy trying to remember it the second time though) and find that Raijin and Fuujin were possessed. They apologize and I meet the Starry's mother the Queen, who tells me all about the monster Gira Sozan that the mirror will release.

So yeah, I go fight him and he completely demolishes me in his second form. His first form is quite annoying as he floats around, throwing projectiles in 8 directions and regularly stopping time so you can't avoid him crashing into you. Then comes his second form, where he either throws a big red energy wave at you when you stand beneath him or fills the screen with almost unavoidable lightning if you stand anywhere else.

The rematch goes much more smoothly after turning the speed back down and spamming my barrier ESP move, which makes me completely invulnerable for a pretty small energy cost.

With all the levels completed, a mysterious staircase appears in the library hub world... But before going down, I backtrack to two of the other worlds to pick up the remaining two rocks I need to craft the best armour. A bit of item trading later and I've got it. My level is maxed and now my inventory is complete.

I go down the staircase into a weird temple where I meet this... interesting character. He's the strongest partner by far, as he calls down lightning on enemies above or below him and turns into a fiery dragon and collides with them when they're to his side.

I fight some rematches against Seadra and Rikki, and then a plot twist: the evil looking monster man was actually a bad guy! He swipes my rings and leaves me to fight the Metal God alone.

Time for the last confrontation. The Dream Destroyer starts by just teleporting around the room and letting his shadow guys do the work for him. He's immune to all weapons except my ESP Beam, but otherwise he's a pushover.

Now onto phase 2...

The Dream Destroyer's second form is a bit tougher. He mainly launches four projectiles that react differently depending on what form he's in. He cycles through faces based on the four bosses before settling on this four-eyed monstrosity which fires lightning from its hands and creates pillars of fire.

I've got three things on my side though: one, a huge supply of regenerative items; two, the barrier ESP; and three the Golden Gun. This is a pretty awesome weapon which launches a rocket, which then splits into three rockets, and then splits into FIVE rockets that practically cover the whole screen.

The Dream Destroyer is defeated, the rings are retrieved and everyone is happy. Cue credits. All in all, a pretty cool game. It got a tad repetitive and it's pretty easy but I'd still say it's worth playing. Onto SNES.

I rolled World Heroes 2. A fighting game shouldn't take me too long to beat, I'd expect...

I picked Janne since she's hot and has a chain sword (Ivy from Soul Calibur prototype?). I jacked up the difficulty and changed the controls, as they were set to the "arcade" setting which meant the strength of your attacks depended on how long you held down the button instead of being on separate ones.

J. Max murdered me the first time, but I made a comeback on our second match once I discovered Janne's move where she leaps forward with her sword like that. I just waited until he jumped or threw a projectile and countered with it endlessly. The same tactic brought down mini-Joe Higashi there easily.

I suspect there'll be a lot of very similar looking screenshots coming up...

Next is Captain Kidd, a pirate who lives in a cave with a pile of dubloons and an undead shipmate dancing on top of them. He has the power to fire ghost ships out of his armpit.

Then I made Sakura from Street Fighter cry. I guess that's expected when some crazy French lady starts hacking at you with a sword and tells you to kneel before her.

And people have said that Street Fighter was racially insensitive. Just look at this guy. And then he's followed by a viking. When is this game supposed to be set?

>>413495
After killing Genghis Khan I'm onto arguably the most famous character from this series Brocken, who answers the age old question "what if Inspector Gadget was a Nazi?" Sadly I have no screenshots of his go-go-gadgets arms or elbow missiles, but I do have one showing off Janne's finely sculpted rear.

I lost to him once and his win-quote made me wonder if it was specific to Janne... but I'm assuming it's only a coincidence. I beat him in the next match, then I fight ninja-Ryu (pirates, vikings and now a ninja; now all we need is a cowboy and that's almost every cliche covered).

Then along comes Rasputin. Not content to paint the rest of the world in broad strokes, the developers have decided to just stick the mad monk himself in the game and give him the ability to throw balls of electricity and kill you with the cossack dance. All I can say is thank God he's wearing boxers.

Final boss time with Seth... I mean N. Geegus. He's essentially the T-1000 meets Shang Tsung, so he spends most of the fight morphing into other fighters. When he wins he does his best Cho Aniki impression.

Once he's beat, lightning strikes the arena and out comes Dio, who looks like a bad guy from the Guyver. He's pretty hard mostly because my usual tactic of spamming the same move over and over when the opportunity arises doesn't work too well on him.

I've been trying to play Power Dolls for about an hour now. I say trying because the game give you o indication of what to do, what stats man what, what weapons are what, what those numbers mean, etc.etc. Goggling for the manual has only come back with 'it's not very helpful in that regard' so it's trial and error for me. Mostly error really

What I have been able to figure out is that it's a hex-based strategy game where you control an all female team of mecha pilots. This sounds awesome, but with not much to go on, I'm finding the game to be a challenge because I got no fucking clue what I'm doing. Except for dying.I'm doing that quite well.

1st mission is to blow up a damn to halt advancing troops. Your 'Dolls' are split into 3 groups. The defaults are 1st Landing, 2nd Landing and Artillery. Each doll is assigned to a carrier to deliver them to the battlefield

I dropped 2nd landing into a faster plane, to use a smaller group to scout ahead and take out missile sites and see what kind of resistance I can expect. I took out 2 sites that would've damaged my planes, and just as I drew a buttload of tanks, 1st landing and Artillery show up. Which is good, because 1st landing is all my heavier attackers, who can be dropped off near the dam without needing to trek through, and spend all their actions blowing shit up.

Fingers crossed I don't screw up

Here's some of the commands while the enemy takes it's turn.

Your 3 moves options are pretty simple. Moves hexes. It costs 2AP to move quickly, 4 for standard, 6 for safely. The quick options leaves you open to free attacks from enemy units, so only use in clear areas or in smokescreens where you can evade easier. Safely naturally makes it easier to avoid such attacks. Moving onto an enemy occupied hex initiates close combat, which is useful against tanks and if you have no weapons

Detect Enemy lets you increase your field of vision. Best left to units armed with scanners, as you go from 6 hexes wide to 11. Being able to scan wider areas means you can tell if it's safe to rush forward, or if there's a wall of tanks heading your way.

The 2 attack options are self explanatory. You have a limited number of shots with each one (took me a while to figure this one out), some attack in a radius, some are non-attacsk like smokescreens. Precise is an option that is available for single shot weapons like cannons that costs double AP but is more likely to hit.

Artillery Bombing calls down your Artillery fighter to blow shit up good and proper It takes a turn for an attack run,so your enemy can move, but if you can predict where they'll be or where they'll move to, do it, it's worth the AP.

Abandon Weapon let's you drop spent weapons to increase your Close Combat ability. Use it since having a empty weapon serves no purpose.

Transport calls in your carrier to bail you out. Useful if you're about to explode.

Activate shields brings up a shield that reduces damage by making it harder for enemies to score hits. Very useful, worth not attacking to activate.

Statistics shows you the Doll's stats, and Set Explosives is mission specific

My first wase of 4 got destroyed just as the backup wave came in.

The enemy is pretty weakened due to sustained missile fire over the rounds. The secnod wave managed to deploy in front of the furthest tanks and mechs and is slowing them down nicely. 15 turns left though, and the enemy has a lot of units left

Man this game is annoying. You've only got one team-mate and, unlike just about every other sports game I'm familiar with, you have almost no control over him whatsoever even when he has the puck. You can make him pass it or shoot it, but for the most part he'll just amble around wherever he wants or stand right in front of the enemy's goal when he has the puck.

My current tactics consist of scoring one goal in any way possible (mostly through luck) and then trying to hang onto the puck the rest of the match so that the other team don't get a hold of it. That equates to about five minutes of shooting at the goal constantly and ten minutes just passing the puck back and forth.

On the plus side, I think I'm near the last match of the championship.

Day 3 of Dream Maze... I made some progress in brick tower last night. Got up to the 6th floor. There seem to be a lot less NPCs here compared to the other towers, which makes it feel a lot more empty and boring. I'm hoping this tower follows the trend of the other two towers and only has 10 floors. And I hope I'm nearing the end of the game.

Okay, back in the game. It's become considerably easier now that I've found out how to do a Super Shot, which is basically an instant goal if you can get the aim right (which is admittedly easier said than done). As you can see, it's made my scores somewhat more impressive.

Also every now and then a "P Bottle" appears on the rink that appears to give a speed boost... At least that's what I can gather every time the enemy swipes it because I can't work out how to use it myself.

The last team I have to fight are really irritating. They have a habit of attacking you with their asses just as you're about to launch a Super Shot and passing the puck by bouncing it off the wall at the very opposite end of the rink, which magically flies right back to them on the rebound. I was able to prevail however and RED WIN WOOOOOO

I've finally caught up to where I was last time. I'll roll Mega Drive later on.
