Modern FPS rely on a Pavlovian style of reward where you get levels to unlock shinny new gadgets. See in the old Rainbow Six games you would have access to all weapons, characters, and attachment from the very beginning and you just had to figure out how to use all of it to complete each mission and the reward you got for doing so was just intrinsic to the beating the game itself. Modern developers believe that modern players need something a lot more concrete than just being good and beating the game, so they you some hoops and ladders to jump through to give the modern game a sense of accomplishment.

Fallout 3 is a very realistic tactical shooter, you can aim in individual limbs.

I loved R6, vr. Breaks my heart every time I see people want to talk about it but only really mean Vegas+. Rogue Spear is one of my favourite games of all time. So deep if you wanted it to be. The Temple Gate level is still so stupidly hard it can only be a glitch.

But I forgive you, Red Storm.

Is this game even playable on a DC controller?

The handful of devs that made them stopped making them.

>> No.4027654

not retro, but player unknowns battlegrounds is extremely tactical when you get 4 non retarded team members to work with. i would venture to say that game is 90 percent positioning, 5 percent luck, 5 percent shooting.

probably about as playable as any shooter on the system, not worth the time for right-handed players unless you had these (assuming the game in question supports it, never played rainbow six on the DC but i've touched base on unreal, quake, and outtrigger)

Take it to >>>/v/ or >>>/pubg/. Acknowledging it is "not retro" doesn't mean it gives you an excuse. What the fuck is wrong with you?

People still make them. You just have to dig deeper.

Ready or Not is one.

The OP asked what happened to the genre and he gave an example of a game he thinks is a modern tactical shooter. He's retarded for thinking PUBG is anything like R6 but you're also retarded for kneejerking like that.

They're still around but they've gotten way more niche which is pretty bad since it was already a niche genre to begin with. Doesn't help that every hyped attempt to bring them back kept falling right on its face like Takedown Red Sabre.

I think SWAT 3 is the best close quarters tactical shooter of all time. I think SWAT 4 isn't as good as Raven Shield.

Differences between PC/Console:

R6 1 PC version: frrrt, uh. (Dead enemys falling on ground sounds like a door open/close)
R6 1 PSX version: pam, uhh. (Dead enemys falling on ground sounds like good, realistic weapons, zoom, good athmosphere but bad key config and no planing)
Rogue Spear: frrt, ahu, ihu, ehu.!? (Bad sound)

For me, PSX version are the best.

How to port PSX R6 1 version to PC without emulator?

Probably the same basic thing that happened to all comparatively niche genres, demand didn't scale with development costs. You'd think it would be bigger with the modern military shooter glut of the past decade though.

Fair enough. Pathfinding is hard and this is not a thing I'm unfamiliar with it. So long as you can unstuck them by going back.

So, SWAT 3 has made its way to steam. Steam lists it as singleplayer game even though it has multiplayer, but I guess that's because the official servers have been long dead so it might as well be singleplayer game. Can it still be played in multiplayer via hamachi? I remember liking SWAT series way more than Rainbow Six.

I remember getting Rainbow Six 3 + headset bundle for the original Xbox. The headset could be used to command the npc characters via voice command which was pretty cool, though you need to articulate the words perfectly and shit got pretty intensive if you were not a native english speaker. Trying to bark commands while shooting terrorists was always a riot.

I also got Rainbow Six 3 gold on steam, should we gather /vr/ troops and coop play it sometime?

In those games you had to think too much. You had to plan every detail and replay the levels to get through them. Modern people can't deal with all that.

I still own the collector's edition in mint condition.

There is a fan-made compilation called Rainbow Six Black Ops. Its R6 with expansion plus Rogue Spear with expansions all compiled into a single campaign with bugixes and shit.

Not hard at all. Clear the outwards areas, then stack up two AI squads on the side entrances to the stage. Go to the balcony that is overlooking the stage, toss flashbangs and issue go-codes at the same time. Oh also take out the opposing side balcony guards before all that, but that is easy.
