Find a game/character(s) that you like, and play a lot. Get to know your character's move set, how far each one goes and how fast everything moves, spend time practicing your execution, and play with other people.

Don't get mad when you lose. You will lose. Everybody loses. Suck it up and play some more. Try to figure out why you lost and what you can do to stop it from happening - or how you can do it to the other player first. Keep playing, keep an open mind and keep learning new techniques.

Awesome, thanks dudes. I've been playing the Dreamcast version as Ryu all day and have been having a fucking blast, though I had to continue at least 10 times while playing.

T Hawk, Blanka, and Zangief give me the most trouble.

I'll check out fightcade and some YouTube shit tomorrow.

>>4024247
Appreciate the tips and information. I'm gonna stick to Ryu. Losing does suck, but if there's anything I have, it's patience.

I definitely need to work on my execution as well, a lot of shoryukens come out as hadokens, though it may be the fact that I'm using a Saturn pad for the first time and getting used to the d-pad. I've never had much trouble using other controllers over the years.

Thanks everyone.

Just keep playing. I think one of the better ports is on the CP Changer console. However, I still want that one for the Dreamcast, but it is so expensive even though it is one of the bad ports no one likes.

>>4024670
My favorite is Cammy, but I main charge characters like Guile, Vega/M.Bison, Balrog/Vega, M.Bison/Balrog, E.Honda, but I do well with Ken/Ryu and Dhalsim as well. Fondest memory was going to a tournament but I was very young, and I should have entered the youth tournament as it was handled quickly, but I opted for the general admission tournament because my mentality was "I came here to win it all" but I was not knocked out of winners bracket but my mother was getting super tired and I had to go around the semi-finals because it was already around 2AM. I distinctly remember one of the tournament organizers saying "you're doing pretty well" and I couldn't help but think "I expected to." Mind you, I live in the middle of nowhere in the USA, so there was not much competition in those days.

>>4024247
I come from a different direction into fighting games. One where I just moved up with similarly skilled (or more like lack of skilled) players. However, from the same circle, improvement naturally happened and everyone gets brought up. I still get mad when I lose, and I was at one point a player of mid-tier characters, and my only counter was to use the top-tier characters to overcome better players, but my personality (evil characters) and comfort was still always with the mid-tier characters.

Also tatsu tends to miss on crouching opponents. Red fireball is your best bet because you're safe if they block and knock them on their ass if you hit

I remember reading everyone was complaining the Dreamcast version has 1 frame of input lag. Everyone preferred the PS2 version because it uses the actual arcade ROM and emulates. I just want the Dreamcast version as that console gets more love from me than my PS2 does.

>I definitely need to work on my execution as well, a lot of shoryukens come out as hadokens

This is the main thing to focus on at this point. The first step is getting so that every move you want comes out by barely thinking about it. That's really just practice and muscle memory and getting used to the pad you're using.

Once you've got that down you can work on more in depth strategy and mind games. Getting your fundamentals solid is the first step though.

It's way more fun to beat someone with a low tier character than a top tier one. My SF mains are Sagat and Dan, and even though I love playing as Sagat there's just a special feeling you get when you body someone with Dan.

>>4024669
Inputs inputs inputs. Work on those inputs. If you're playing a version that shows what you're pressing it can be a huge help as well.

The PS2 had tons of options for controllers. I think it's the console that has the most robust options for controllers.

>>4034749
In those days I remember everyone still stuck with playing the arcade cabinets and my home port of choice was the Sega Saturn (as it was my primary system then). I clearly remembered being steered away from the Dreamcast version because of all the complaints of its 1 frame input lag. I even remember Evo tournament organizers hated the Dreamcast so much as to destroy them on stream/camera. Yet, they never complained about the PS2 version, because it supposedly used the actual arcade ROM instead of being reprogrammed as it was for the Dreamcast. I wish I hadn't been swayed in those days, as the game is way too expensive for me to get on the Dreamcast now, and I really want it just because it is on the Dreamcast.

That's a shame. So that means there was no good home port to play outside of emulation. I remember the HD Remix uses the Dreamcast code, does it suffer the same 1 frame input lag (in addition to artwork that I did not like, featured in some artbooks of at my local bookstore yesterday).

At least $230USD for the Dreamcast ... I will never be able to get it now ... so I best learn to settle.
