/vr/ has indeed seen it's better days. The problems started with "le retro" fadders who come here from time to time and ask the same questions endlessly, instead of using google, a wiki, or even the catalogue here.
And then theres just endless trolling about the dumbest shit. Like what to call the psx/ps1. Also, it's very SPECIFICALLY supposed to be called SNES and not EVER to be called "super nintendo" because that's supposedly not the name or some shit...

There's even been lots of arguments about what constitutes retro and what consoles are allowed here.
So now there's the /vr/ old fuck defense force. Not an actual group, but they may ad well make it official. Basically, they just go around giving everyone shit over nothing. Like, if you have an unpopular opinion, or admit to playing a newer game, they'll jump up your ass, ranting about you being a retro wannabe fadder and etc. Especially if you have a non standard thought about a final fantasy game.

That is /vr/ in a nutshell. Don't come here looking for anything other than fighting.

That mix of 3D and fx inside 2D styled games is what adds these psx games an extra value over plain 2D ports and pure 3D games inmo.
Like the G Darius, Rtype delta or Philosoma.
You can see how a good shmup Einhander lacks some visual appeal for being entirely 3D where a 2D mixture would have worked better for this system. I think this was the main problem of PSX, once games went full 3D
in the limited specs of the console, they wouldb become obsolete over time even for the retro purpose. Because most of those games where great but who the fuck can deal with those disproportional pixels, uncorrected textures and draw distances nowadays?

It is worth to sell a moded ps1 anyway? I personally would keep it only if I get it to last over time but
I feel like it may die anytime soon when the lens break from reading reading CD-R if I keep playing it for the retro enjoyment.
In case I keep it, is there a way to burn cd-r that doesnt strees the console other than doing it at low speed? Is there like some special cd-r that last over time and is easier for the lens to read? If so I would like to make an awesome collection on those.

I didn't know whether to post this here or in the obscure ps1 game thread.
Anyway, this is Fuuun Gokuu Ninden, a 2D platformer-action game based on Journey to the West, you control Gokuu, the monkey king, and use his magic baton to beat enemies, he also can hop on the flying cloud.
You can also play as the pig, and as the kappa.
The style of the game is pre-rendered 3D-looking graphics for the characters and enemies, and 2D for the background. It's not bad, not great either, an average, ok game.
I remember reading it was made by the guy who did the Tomba games, but can't confirm.

i'm pretty sure the parallel port could've been used as a ram expansion port, but sony removed it on later models

the problem with 2D ps1 games was the lack of ram, the hardware is fairly capable at 2d, but games heavy on frames/animation (like neo geo's fighting games) suffer a lot

There was only one Playstaton when it came out. This is like asking why the NES wasn't NES1, or why Genesis wasn't Genesis1.

Shitposters and newfags use that term to piss people off. The correct abbreviation is PS.
The PSX (ピーエスエックス Pī Esu Ekkusu?) is a Sony digital video recorder with a fully integrated PlayStation 2 video game console. It was released in Japan on December 13, 2003. Since it was designed to be a general-purpose consumer video device, it was marketed by the main Sony Corporation instead of Sony Computer Entertainment and does not carry the usual PlayStation branding. Its high cost resulted in poor sales,[2] meaning that the PSX was never released outside of Japan. This made it a commercial failure.

Both are good, but I prefer the PSX version. The PSP version completely redoes the art style (much as PSX redid SFC's) to be noticeably less chibi, among other things. More noticeable PSP changes are fully voiced *everything* (not just skits) and yet another new character (Rondoline Effenberg).

That last bit was a dealbreaker for me- Suzu was enough clutter as-is but with Rondoline they've basically made the bloat even worse by introducing a completely original character which they then force into a perfectly good storyline at random intervals in a clumsy attempt to give Dhaos more characterization. She also plagues the counterpart game Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X, which is a remake of the GBC game of the same name and was more than sufficient to tell the rest of Dhaos' tragic backstory without resorting to ORIGINALE CARACTER DONUT STEEL.

>> No.3971961

>>3971938
Sony never did officially, it's a gaming media / gamers thing. "PSX" was the prototype codename (and later the name of Sony's digital video recorder), calling the original PlayStation "PSX" makes as much sense as calling the Mega Drive / Genesis "Mark V".

now we have these pathetic "smart" phones that break, shatter, lockup, forget what they're doing (screen/freeze) and O/S that can actually lock you out of your own phone as if it was owned by google instead of you

Someone who put a few hours into those games and saw how awful they are. Writing, level design, and especially music is terrible in both of them. And the second one is full of bugs like gibberish lines of text instead of properly translated dialogue, missing music so entire battles are silent etc.
I get that you played it when you were 9 and it rocked your world, but they are really awful games. There are lots of other good jrpg's on the ps1.

Sounds like you played it on a real shitty emulator (because gibberish isn't there unless you force it) or your Playstation was faulty.

Born '82, love jRPGs, but didnt play this series until last year.

There are some beautiful scenes, but it is a fairly lackluster and nonmemorable couple games to me. It really didn't seem as good as games like Valkyrie Profile, BoF4, and the Final Fantasy's (particularly 9). Like that anon, I can't see why people hold Suikoden is such high regard. The first was really rough to play specifically.

Taiyo Yuden was not a meme, but 4x burning was (except for the dark days when burn underrun protection was not a thing). Taiyo Yuden was known for extremely strict Q&A as well as their own proprietary cyanine dye blend which was said to be more resilient than most (and was certainly no worse).

Sadly, they sold their entire optical unit to CMC Magnetics several years ago. I wouldn't trust any of the new CMC-Taiyo stuff; evidently the CMC name is something of a black mark in the optical media enthusiast community on anyone who would invoke it.

I expected more proof than this. For all the hundreds of thousands of times it was called a PS or PS1 or PSone, only those few times you could scrounge up?

The most important fact was that Sony, in house, referred to it as the Playstation X and short hand PSX. They realized it was too edgy and childish and dropped the X for the full release. Some people even have small proof the initial X came from the system being called Sony X Nintendo (X meaning cross). So all the autistics still saying Pee Ess Cross by typing out PSX look even more autistic.

yeah that's why you have edgelords trying extra hard to scrounge up any "evidence" someone called it psx at some point in the past; the irony is that you can literally call it anything you want, but the fact that they need to justify it just proves how insecure they are, and that they use it as a status symbol. Tomba 2 does little to innovate from the formula that Tomba 1 established. Many of the mechanics are carried over almost exactly.

The thing is that Tomba 2 implements these mechanics in a more enjoyable way. Overall, the pacing is a lot better, and the difficulty curve is a bit more enjoyable (Not saying either are hard games, but I played both when I was like nine). The sidequests were also a little bit more memorable imo.

Tomba 2 probably ends up being the preferred for those who play it first. Tomba 1 ends up being the preferred for those who played it first.

Not even close IMO.
Tombi2 become and actual 2.5 and at a times 3D platformer.
First Tomba stays 2D at all time.

First Tomba has awesome mood that has all kinds of weird woven into it.
Tomba 2 is a happy platformer with everything that made psx platformers great which is bright colours, nice mood and general aura of "everything will be all right"

Id say to play both of them because both offer something different.

Most look like SNES games with slightly higher color count and usually higher horizontal resolution, but it makes sense since most of 2D games from that era were low budget. High-end 16-bit games look serviceable enough, anyway.

What is with the history revisionism surrounding the term PSX? I'm honestly baffled by it.

This is as asinine as if I decided to go up to some Vietnam vets and start telling them the m16 was not used in the conflict. Then when they said "Uh, but I personally used it and I knew tons of other infantrymen who did as well" scream "ANECDOTAL YOU'VE PROVIDED NO PROOF"

The entire argument is based around calling people liars, and telling them that their own personal experience never happened. Maybe you can trick other young kids who weren't around, but how do you expect to actually convince the people who used the term?

>>3952019
I've been calling it the PSX in online forums for 20 years I'm not going to stop because it hurts some kid's feelings who wasn't even alive when the system was current. Next people are going to start telling me the Gamecube was never called the GCN.

If people want to call it the PS1 in hindsight now that we're up to the PS4, that's perfectly acceptable to me. I just don't get why this guy is trying to convince the very people who called it the PSX back in the 90s and early 2000s that it was never called that.

Sure, PS1 does have good 2D games, but not really as many (and as good) as the 16-bit era.
Also, a lot of PS1 2D looks like shit, DBZ Ultimate Battle 22 comes to mind, the sprites there look awful, with washed up colors and sort of look like paper cuts, as opposed to sprites in 16-bit DBZ games where the sprites feel a lot more organic, and with defined colors.
I noticed there's a lot of PS1 spritework that has this problem of looking washed out and like a cutout piece of paper that doesn't fit with the enviroment.
Really impressive PS1 2D like SOTN are actually rare.

I know. PS1 got ports from SNES game, so it's more than capable, but most PS1 2D games fall kind of short compared to 2D in the 16 bit era, again save cases like SOTN.
It's understandable because devs were more into 3D and moving away from 2D.
PS1 still has a bunch of good 2D games, I like Guilty Gear, Little Ralph and others, but in sheer quantity (and quality), 16-bit era rules over PS1 in terms of 2D.

No there is not, only what actually happened bro. That's how the past works. The FUTURE has "any number of possibilities", the past doesnt.

>psx/ps1 fags ruin another playstation thread

It was labeled as PSX like the gamecube was labeled as GCN. No one outside of turbo autists called the playstation "the PSX" just like no one outside of turbo autists called the gamecube "the GCN". ps1 was rightfully adopted after it was public knowledge that sony was going to numerate their playstation consoles with the PS2.

give it a fucking rest.

I applaud you for trying to step up your trolling game, but people regularly called it the psx. And no, it was not like the gcn (which no one used).

>but people regularly called it the psx.
you and your after school game club don't represent what a majority of people called the playstation. It was called the playstation. PSX was used by magazines and cheat books since it saves space on paper. No one called it the PSX out loud. I would argue that more people called it the PS (which is still rare) than the PSX because it's actually on syllable less than that saying playstation/psx. psx/playstion are both three so calling it a PSX instead of a playstation had no benefit.

>And no, it was not like the gcn (which no one used).
Except it was, it's the acronym for "playstation experimental". when you read a 5th-gen magazine it was N64/PSX/SAT. Did people call the sega saturn the SAT? Even en-sixty-four was less used than just saying nintendo 64. GCN is an acronym for "gamcube nintendo". No one actually called it a GCN or the "gamecube nintendo" just like no one called the playstation the PSX or "playstation experimental".

thanks for proving my point dunderhead. magazines and people typing online used PSX because it's a goddamn acronym, this was the same case with GCN. Just because magazines and people on their dial-up internet used the acronym GCN, doesn't mean people called the gamecube a gee-cee-en.

My lord, you're an actual autist. That isn't how language works. People called it the PSX. Deal with it.

I actually did call it a GCN, and a PSX for that matter.

that's how acronyms work retard, if the acronym is less syllables than the word or phrase that's how most people will pronounce it. "PSX" has three and so does "playstation", there is no reason to use the acronym when pronouncing it. "PS2" has three syllables whereas "playstation 2" has four, thus people pronounce it as pee-ess-two. "GCN" has three syllables whereas "gamecube" and "GC" has two, thus people pronounce it as gamecube instead of gee-cee or gee-cee-en. how is this hard to understand?

>>4048363

What IS your fucking point? Yeah most of us said Playstation and typed PSX. And here on 4chan we're fucking typing and turbo autist revisionists are calling out people who TYPE PSX. Way to be correct and contribute abso-fucking-lutely nothing.

>> No.4048419

>>4048409
because even typing PSX post-2000 is retarded, just call it the PS1 or playstation. PSX was used as an acronym before Sony decided "hey let's just count our new consoles". They themselves decided to whitewash PSX with PS1, which is completely acceptable since their other console's acronyms are PS2, PS3, and PS4. plus the fact that they released a playstation model literally called a "PSone"

Spoken language does not conform to your autistic conceptions. PSX was a commonly used term for the system in media, so many people naturally referred to it like that in conversation because they were just used to it. Playstation and PSX were used pretty interchangeably, though Playstation was undoubtedly a bit more common in conversation. But just plain ol' PS was said uncommonly, probably because it just doesn't sound as good. Really, you run into the same problem in text, too. PS doesn't look as good in type as PSX, which is why many magazines stuck with the moniker despite it not making any real sense.
Actually, it's really funny to see you sperg so much about it. PSX occupies a niche were it's just strange enough for autists not to be able to process it like a normal human being.

A more appropriate example would be 'The Great War' vs 'World War I'.
