Reposted from old thread:

I could do with some help.

I installed Zandronum a while ago but every time I start it up I get BSOD. I uninstalled it after about three times.

Has anyone else had anything similar to that and what did you do?

I'm making two maps, the first is a bit more based on exploration (non linear, theres a main door you need 3 keys to open, go and find the keys in any order). The second would be linear as all hell and quite short, leading up to a boss fight and a huge punch up with 200 monsters just before it.

I have two concerns though.
- I want to use colored lights and underwater sectors, this means I'll require GZDoom. Is GZDoom really, honestly that much of an issue for people? Why is that?

- There's quite a tonal shift between the first and second level, should I just release them separately?

To explain:
Slade 3 has a very promising Map Editor in it's SVN builds. It's pretty good, but I still recommend starting with DB2, especially considering that right now it's the only kept-up-to-date Linux editor. It also has a Windows version, and is developed on Windows 7. Pubs.

But if you want to make maps with Slade 3, expect a lot of bugs. Some of the ones I've found:
Don't right click to get rid of the first vertex when making a sector. Crash.
Occasionally buttons will get stuck in 3D mode. Mash the arrow keys until it stops, then right click and close out of the window that comes up.
Save very often.

Not sure how to go about this one. I'm assuming when you say "the ground has been gouged away", that you mean that it looks like it's been crumbled into that hellish lava pit? I'd put more sectors in between those higher points to give the ground a more ragged, broken-up look. Also that techwall texture is kinda weird if the ground was just supposed to be concrete flooring or something. Personally I'd save techwall type stuff for a computer room or some such.

You don't need GZdoom for colored lights and underwater sectors. Unless by colored lights you mean dynamic lights specifically, which would require GL stuff. Otherwise you can do some trickery with colored sectors to do whatever you need in software.

Hell, 3D floors don't even require GZdoom anymore.

As for fears of a tonal shift, I wouldn't worry about it myself, though I could understand the fear of inconsistency. I'd say ponder on whether the shift seems abrupt or transitional when you've got the levels playing one after the other.

Fucking inside of menus a lot crashes quickly. Don't ever alt+F4 the map editor. Press Q and calmly save and exit the map editor, then restart the program.

For more info on mashing buttons:
If you're spinning, press the key in the direction you're spinning firmly for a second and let go. Then tap the other direction. Repeat until fixed.

If you're flying up/down, do the same as above, only with up or down.

If you're unsatisfied with stock Doom textures, I'd recommend grabbing the CC4 texture pack. It's basically a pack of some of the best textures out there, and you can find just about anything you want in there. The only time I'd suggest for going elsewhere is if you're designing several maps with a specific theme and need a wider variety of textures within that theme.

Words from THE man Bobby Prince

>"The Archvile is an evil healer. Anyone getting in his way is blasted with fire and disintegrated. This includes other demons. But, after he has wrought his destruction, he then goes around and reanimates all of the demons. Because of this interesting dual personality, I decided to give him a very evil laugh as an active sound. For his death sound, I recorded a young girl saying 'why,' pitch shifted it down and mixed it with other sounds. The Archvile just doesn't understand why anyone would want to kill him as he sees himself as only doing good for his fellow demon."

It's pretty good, but I've seen packs equally as good. I'd say it's daft to imply it's all one would ever need, dont limit the tools or resources available unless it's the mappers idea.

Quake textures go excellently with doom. The ''doom style'' textures on Realm 667 I think look quite nice as well.

I wasn't saying it's all you'll ever need, I meant that it's a great addition to the stock textures to give yourself good variety with a pool of quality textures. I basically think of it as a sort of baseline, stock textures + CC4 pack. Then add more if you find yourself in want of additional textures, though I'd be careful of getting too ahead of yourself and needlessly adding resources - you can make a map look gaudy if you start chucking in new monsters, textures, and whatever just for the variety's sake.

I'm halfway through this six map set and the aesthetics have been excellent. There isn't much backtracking and its difficulty is moderate.

Man, this map sucked even for '97. I found myself getting stuck repeatedly because the author never considered that people could go inside the monster traps. There was almost no detail and the gameplay consisted of collecting a key, backtracking to the start area, and then doing it again in a different area. The second to last part throws you into a maze with some zombies and monsters hidden in walls, including two cyberdemons. It's not a very big maze. I managed to kill one since the map has plenty of ammo, and ran from the other one to have it fight the Spider Mastermind that showed up later. Interestingly, the spider won that fight. Overall it was a pretty boring map.

This actually wasn't too bad. Between the date and the description, I feared the worst, but it was actually a playable map. Didn't look too bad for 1995, and only had a few amateur mistakes, like tagging more than one sector in a secret area as a secret and some minor texture alignment issues. The switch hunting was worse than Hexen, since the switches didn't even give you a hint as to what they did. You had to backtrack and look everywhere to see what changed. Overall though it wasn't a bad map. Some neat custom textures, most of them were just straight Heretic rips but a few had some nice edits done to them.

Mini screen shows the type and ammo needed to throw the nade. If you don't have enough ammoi it resets to frag.

Frags are regular bouncy grenades, have Cyro, deal ice damage not that great but just as damaging, Mirv. Frag and Cyro are good fun or great utility to substitude for rocket launcher or at 5 health with zombies around the corner.

Bu then there is Mirv. It detonates on impact, launches five mini missiles upwards, total damage that can deal so far 12 so direct hits are not needed. But then missiles seperate into 3 bomblets, which bounce twice (so they all don't explode on roof/Skybow) and you have nice carpet of 15 nades.

Indoor use not advisable.

Vincente Prisu here.

Wondering if there's a way to put together an authentic-feeling coop Wolfenstein. Straight Wolfendoom is from before DECORATE days, and only has one weapon replacement (and it's not very good). So what I'm looking for is

--An authentic Wolfenstein weapon replacement wad, perhaps one like the BJ Samsara that has more wolfy-feeling weapons but that's it

--A set of Wolfenstein-designed maps that are coop-friendly. The original Wolfendoom mapset isn't very conducive to coop, because the amount of enemies that spawn doesn't go up very much when you increase difficulty, and my Nightmare games usually bring in enough players to need a ton of enemies to kill. (on the other hand, I'm not terribly familiar with Wolfenstein. Are there hordes of enemies in later levels that I don't remember? I haven't played it since before Doom was even released)

Okay I considered a lot of the input I got initially on my first map and changed a few things around. I got around to putting some support textures in between breaks. I put in a few more places with ammo and health, sometimes even upgrading a simple like or shotgun shells to being a box of bullets or shells. I changed in the two dark rooms that had a few zombie men and replaced them with other monsters like imps or Hell Knights. Changed the textures in two rooms so they look radically different texture wise. I am unsure if I got rid of the odd hall of mirrors effect in the more "battle arena" type room though, but I personally didn't see it persisting and re did some of the lines in the room just in case.

Thanks for the input the two people gave me before, hopefully I changed a lot of what was wrong for the better.

Just finished this on UV. Hard as fuck sometimes, I almost ran out of ammo a lot of times, but always got a little to advance and find more. The chainsaw should be nearer the entrance to save some shells, but still, good map. My only complain is that some door textures are misaligned and this (picture related). These textures seem just odd like walls, they work more like windows.

I'm one of the guys who played it last time.

Ammunition is still incredibly tight. By the time I got to the room with the Mancubi in the center, I only had enough shells to deal with a Pain Elemental and some Demons; I only had a chainsaw to get myself any further beyond that.

I'd add more shells to the room beforehand, and maybe tuck a few in that little room where the demons come out from when you walk toward the stairs into that big open space with the Manucbi & everything else. Were you able to find the super shotgun before you entered that room? I changed the lighting in the hallway that leads up to that room. Some of the lights that flicker do so on the two doors on the hallway. I am curious if you saw those two doors or not. If you didn't I may change things up again to make them more visible. I might also change one of the stimpacks into a medkit during that area because sometimes I get overwhelmed as well with imps going in and out of the darkness.

>>404686
I think I may put some more ammo in the first specter closet, and may sprinkle some around, especially the final switch which I will also leave some ammo behind so the player can clean up the final rooms as well (if they didn't end up going there before hand). Considering that I might pepper some ammunition there as well and a couple stimpacks since the level doesn't dictate if you should go left or right at the room with tons of the imps and the Hell Knight pillars.

Also thanks for the feed back guys.

THAT is something I've been thinking since I wanted to make monster sprites for a local project, I mean, it's more easier to do (fro those who aren't into pixel art) to take a big chunk of clay and make whatever they want. I don't like high-res sprites, because all they ever do is just, literally translate the low-res sprites into high-res, not adding any new details or anything. When they're low-res, you don't really notice how underdetailed they are, you use your imagination. But when they're high-res, they just look plain and boring.

Imagine if in modern Zelda games, Link wore a plain green tunic with a brown belt and brown boots, and there were no details on them or anything. That's basically what HD remakes do. It's why the Street Fighter and Megaman X HD remakes are considered so ugly.

Well I think sprites look a certain way because of the limitations of what the artists are working with. I don't think the Imps would have been that particular shade of brown if Doom didn't have a specific palette it was done in. That is why the Imps look like shit all hi-res'd up, and why Doom 3's imps didn't just look like 3D Doom Imps. Because the actual Doom devs, terrible though they may be at making actual games, understand that being faithful to their original sprites would have made for really poor high-poly models.

If you wanna make something that uses zdoom stuff, then the zdoom wiki is a great place to start.

Just don't fall into the trap of using so many zdoom features that you make the gameplay itself suffer. Knee Deep in ZDoom is an infamous example of this.

That's what the Doom developers actively encouraged you to do.

Shit, once you play some community mappacks or Final Doom (TNT, Plutonia) you're gonna go right back on those words.

Worst case scenario could've been, you reached the exit but you wanted to explore. You press your quicksave key, press y, then go on your little trip.

I like the head, get's the message across and is not overdetailed.

Only things I would add would be a (i dont know anatomy here) a ring around the base of the horn? Like of flesh? A callus? As if to show the horn is protruding out of the head rather than a direct part of it.

Wider shoulders might look more appropriate to a cyberdemon (yours could pass off as a baron if that's what you prefer) as well as slightly more defined traps muscles.
