so i haven't played a lot of the classic mario platformers (SMB and 3 on NES, a little bit of world on SNES). what would guys say is the best way to play them at the moment? the mario all stars+world and the SNES version of yoshi's island or the 4 advance games for the GBA?
i'll play them through emulation either way.

Your picture says it all, doesn't it?
GBA games have brighter color palette due to the GBA screen, it looks washed up and pale on emulators.
The screen resolution is also tinier, I haven't played the GBA Mario games and I assume they're still playable, but SNES lets you see more of the screen.
And then there's the sound, GBA has a tinier sound.

The GBA versions have some extras, but IMO the original games are perfect as they are. Leave the extra stuff for a second playthrough maybe, but you're fine playing the OG versions.

>> No.4007396

The GBA games have some bonus content, but lose screen resolution.
The bonus content isn't a big deal anyway.

I'd say play the SNES versions, except for Mario Advance 4. And use this hack with it:

Play it on SNES. If only because of the sound effects (they added the Yoshi voice on GBA, which is also a problem on the other Mario games, they added him the voice... I personally prefer my Mario characters silent).
Yoshi's Island already has secret levels to unlock, so it's not like you'll run out of levels, the GBA version has even more unlockable levels, but it's the same deal with smaller screen, tiny sound, worse colors, etc.

Basically, the only way you want to play GBA versions is on a real GBA, otherwise go for the SNES ver.

Off the top of my head.

Mario Advance 1 - After you beat the game hidden yoshi eggs appear in the..."dark world." Whatever the potion doors are called.
I don't think collecting them all does anything.

2 - You can switch between Mario and Luigi on the overworld. Luigi has some physics changes.
The game keeps track of the dragon coins, if you like collecting things.

3 - One extra bonus level for each world. They're interesting and difficult. Download a save and play them afterwards.

SMA1 features a little amount of new things to interact in some levels and an extra challenge when you beat the game.

SMA2 let's you switch between Mario or Luigi at anytime. If you pick Luigi and play levels, some things will be different, like the way Yoshi can spit out things or how some question blocks with coins act different.
It has a statistic screen which keeps in track how many Dragon Coins have you collected, how many are left to grab and others.
It has also cutscenes, which is three of them. One from intro, one for collecting all Dragon Coins and one for beating all existent courses.

I never beat SMA3, so I can't say what does it have besides the (bothering) Yoshi's voice.

Depending the Advance game you're playing, they have patches which restores the colors to original colors, like how they were viewed on SNES, and removes voices. The only downside is the music, but I don't think it sounds bad. I think they sound different, but still good.

YI:DS was so shit. I played it immediately after the OG YI. I beat the OG in a week with pretty constant playing.
YI:DS though I didn't even finish. I got to like world 4 maybe? And that was a struggle. It was just SO poorly designed. It looks okay, but damn they had no idea what they were doing making levels.

Shit taste. Art-style is all over the place, presentation is shockingly awful, music's not nearly as good as the original, and the level design is borderline Kaizo at times. It feels like a fan-game.

The original releases of these games are the best, as usual.
The All-Stars versions of the NES games are prettier and let you save the game, which makes them MUCH easier and fun for a second playthrough, but it's not really the same experience. Different art, different music, and slightly different physics. The first Mario especially feels totally different from the original.
Play the NES games on NES and the SNES games on SNES. Emulation is tptally fine if you're cheap or want to be able to save.

I played that, it was good but the baby-swap thing was a little tiresome.

Speaking of Yoshi games, what do you guys think of Yoshi's Safari? I think Super Scope in general is underrated, or rather forgotten. I guess people find the 6 AA batteries inconvenient, and playing Scope games can get tiresome for the arm and shoulder, as well as the sight, but I always had a soft spot for the SS6 games, Battle Clash 1 and 2 and Yoshi's Safari.
They are solid rail shooting games. I love the koopaling mech boss fights.

I recall lots of blind jumps and stuff hidden in stupid spaces.
There was nothing like that in the original yoshi's island. Some of the stuff was well hidden, but it never felt unfair. DS felt unfair and tedious with having to swap characters just for 1 red coin.

I think you should replay YI again, it's full of the same shit, like in the skiing levels and in some of the caves in the later worlds.
I'll give you that DS is harder, especially the levels with Chomps, and you really need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the babies.
I think though, that if you grew up with NES games, the memorization isn't so obnoxious to you.
I mean, it has silly amounts of easy lives. You really need to be shit to game over.

>> No.4008515

>>4008190
Oh no, it's not. The new babies seem to belong in a different game, as some enemies and Bowser.

Yoshi also looks pretty different, as in the first one he didn't have legs.

It's like someone trying to ape Yoshi's Island style while not understanding it. It's acopy.

I think it's because Adult Bowser here is drawn on the Paper Mario Bowser model.
But you know, shit, you barely see him until the very end, and in some cutscenes.

I cede this particular criticism to you.

OG YI has some stupid stuff, but not a lot. The first thing that comes to mind is the famous Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy. I would've never found those red coins. But I don't remember anything that bad.
Can't talk about YIDS in that regard, because I never tried to find everything. But over all the game is decent, not really memorable, the baby swaping does get annoying, the characters look off and Yoshis talks too much.

The red coins at the end of the level?
Yeah, I feel ya. Those were the last ones I found too. That was kinda shit, but only because the mechanic for breaking the 'bridges' wasn't introduced prior to that moment and there was no indication they led to anything. That was a rare misstep.
That being said, I did find all the coins sans guide.

It has a very small number of new Poochy levels but no new Yoshi levels, plus a little bit more Amiibo support (meaning more Yoshi skins) and the ability to add Poochy to more levels IF you buy his Amiibo. That's it.

In exchange, you have to drop from 60fps to 30 (unless you have a New 3DS) and deal with much lower-quality, lower-res graphics. Plus you lose multiplayer, which is actually really good in WW.

I'd say the original is still the best. Just like how the SNES version of YI is still the best even though GBA has a few new levels. The mobile ports are a fun way to play the games again, but the new content is not worth the tradeoff in quality.

Give me a reason why other than "muh original experience" or some kind of vague "it's just better on the original hardware"

The game is great regardless of how it's played. As long as someone isn't ruining the experience with shitty filters and savestates, there's no problem.

Considering what he put at the top, he must REALLY love the minor changes they made for the All Stars + World release (like a better Luigi sprite) and the emulated versions have those changes too.

But there are hardly any differences at all between the two SNES releases (and half the releases on his list) so I think he's either ridiculously picky or this is bait to get us to nitpick each release. Imma go with bait.

If you haven't played much of the originals, go with All Stars. If you have, you might be annoyed by the physics being slightly different.

I'm really not a purist but I can't play All Stars SMB1 because I have spent so much time with the NES one. Idk it just feels off and slightly sluggish. I would like to like it as the graphics are nicer but whatever.
