I bet I'm not the only one who usually wonders about that question, so feel free to ask in here to.

Found out about a game called "The Immortal" for Genesis and I'm interested in playing it. Then I saw there's a DOS, Amiga and a NES port as well. Which version do I play? I couldn't find a good comparison list or info on which port is superior or anything

That's because this is one of those oddball games where the ports, while different, are all fairly competent. You might have to try them all.

I was hoping not to hear that since I'm really curious and played some games several times by playing their different ports to see if they're different.

The autism is strong in me there. Thanks though! Guess I'll go for the one where the graphics appear most to me, then.

One of my buddies got fixated on this game for the Genesis, so I went and bought him a CIB copy (He's a good friend) and he didn't realize how hard this game is. You can die in the first room, and there's a shit ton of trial and error.

Also, for ease, look up the combat controls because they're less than intuitive.

That's a really cool gift! Thanks for the hint, guess I'll go for the Genesis version first then

Genny version is the prettiest that I've seen

couldn't really figure out the combat in the 10-ish minutes I played. I've played the NES one a bit more and the combat seemed to make more sense

what am I missing?

This one's another game I've been wondering which port to play of.

This should be what you need. The combat is based on the attack button and what direction you press on the D-pad. This also applies to dodging attacks, you have to dodge attacks based on what direction the enemy is swinging.

It can be frustrating at times, but you should be able to get it down eventually.

I've always been fond of the Sega/Mega CD version. The PS1 and Saturn ones I would avoid, they replace a lot of the gorgeous pixel-art cutscenes with gross FMV videos that just don't hold up.

Mega CD has the premium version. Go for ps1 or saturn if you want to see fmv shit and a different kind of robot at the end

Didn't they actually censor most of the gore in the 32 bit versions?

Unless you know Japanese the Sega CD one is going to be the most complete version you can play in English.
