Did Super Mario World get underwater physics just right?

>intuitive to maneuver
>water pressure is a factor but it doesn't drag you down like a black hole like in SMB1
>the bounce after you hit a quiestion block doesn't make you dive hard down like in SMB3
>you can swim faster if you grab a koopa shell or any other object
>not to mention, being able to grab stuff underwater and use as projectiles

They were really fun water levels.
SMW also has only a few ice levels, but those were also pretty fun, especially the Special World ice level, "Awesome".

>> No.4007994

>>4007982

They're exactly like non-ice levels except with the added fun feature of slipping so you fall down and insta-die 800% as often. There's literally nothing good about them.

To be honest, use of instant-death obstacles (usually pits and spikes) feels kinda excessive in a lot of games.

Don't get me wrong - they can make for a nice challenge, but often they feel out of place. Adding them in later levels to gradually increase difficulty? Cool. Adding them from the very beginning in a 1-hit-death hardcore platformer? Sure, go ahead.

Adding them in the first level of a game that gives you a life bar and has knockback on taking damage? Well, tough luck, dipshit.

same in 3 collections
>i'm having fun catching things and collecting objectives!

Desert levels that aren't themed after the Wild West.

Winter Wonderland levels. Ice caves can stay though.

Horses, in fantasy settings. If you use fictional races, those races should ride fictional creatures and nothing else.

Obviously placed Invincibility items before a hoard of enemies that lasts just long enough to get through them. I'm looking at you Kirby, invincibility is a reward, and not an excuse to make an on rails section.

1 hit kill gameplay. This is an artifact of the quarter eating arcade days that should not have been carried over into home consoles where you haven't the option to load more quarters.

Thats one of the great things about the first smb that gets overlooked.

The first 3 levels had near perfect difficulty scaling to prepare you for the rest of the game.

Whenever im going through rom sets of platformers, the first level can really give a good idea as to how poorly or greatly a game was designed by that thoughtfulness.

I still don't get why people meme about this. I can understand in Sonic games, because they slow the pacing to a crawl. But most other games, they never really bothered me. Hell, if you look at Water temple in Ocarina of Time, its issue is more the tedium of having to toggle the boots, rather than the water itself.
