Why didn't they make this game easier? I remember looking forward to playing a comfy laid back game about dolphins when I six and then getting my ass kicked by it when I got home.

because easy games got rented and beat in a couple of days

They hype for this game was unreal at the time. Ads on tv, ads in magazines, people talking like it was another Sonic type Sega game. And then it was released, and I rented it to, and had no idea what to do or where to go. Nothing in the game is self- explanatory. It's too esoteric, too cryptic. And it's gameplay wasn't' like anything I was familiar with. The power of marketing people. Didn't look into it again until youtube got popular.

>> No.3996960

Because its a game and games involve challenge, not an interactive picture book like most modern "games"

>> No.3996984

Rent prevention. There's an interview somewhere that admits that the game was made too hard. (I think it's the one about the 3DS port.)
The later Japanese version adds checkpoints and other small improvements that makes the game reasonably challenging, instead of pure bullshit.

Because even though little kids like dolphins, it's not a game that was made for kids. Kids like knights too, doesn't mean Ghouls 'n Ghosts should be made for them.

I loved it ever since it came out, but I was in my late teens already. I would suggest that if it still looks interesting you go back and try it now that you're an adult. It's a very fun and interesting game.

Just play the Sega CD version.

Checkpoints don't really make it easier, just shorter if you mess up. Anyone who wants to play Ecco but doesn't want to deal with it's difficulty for whatever reason should just use the debug menu for unlimited life and teleporting past obstacles you're stuck on.

Turn Ecco so he's facing the screen and pause. Then press Right, B, C, B, C, Down, C, and Up.

Lets you fuck with the music tempo for added fun.

If that's what you want, play Ecco Jr.

Ehhh Ecco Jr just plain kinda sucks though. There are regularly people here who want to play the game but find it too difficult for one reason or another, so this an option they can use.

This game brings back so many bad memories. Grew up in a really poor household. Live in a 3rd world country where access to internet media is limited. Best friend and I use to play this every single day after school and on weekends. For months we became so engrossed in the storyline. Get to Lost City of Atlantis. WTF is going on. Get to time machine. Game ends. No matter how many times we played, game would end at time machine.

Friend passed away a year later. Very sad. No one else to play with. Fast forward 15 years later on the anniversary of his death. Decide to emulate this and play it.

Stay up all night. Get to time machine. Use it. Get up and go to living room. MFW in Jurrassic Park. To think my friend died not knowing there was still more to storyline..

>it's not a game that was made for kids

I often wonder who the game was made for. Dope-smoking neo-hippies maybe.

I don't think smoking weed would be very helpful in a game this stressful. It's a puzzle solving adventure game, I would say it's made for people who like that kind of thing.

The Genesis version has a sythy prog rock inspired soundtrack. The Sega CD version sounds sort of like new age classical/ambient. Some prefer one and others prefer the other. It's the biggest difference in the versions besides the Sega CD having check points mid level and a couple of extra levels.

So really, just go with which one you like the soundtrack better.

This game is so hard it still took me an hour to beat even though I was using the debug menu to skip to the final fight with the Vortex Queen and also turned on invincibility (you need to destroy her jaw as part of the process of beating her and she repeatedly sucks in everything within a ten foot radius of that jaw so that even if you're invincible if she gets you with that attack you just get eaten and insta-die; also if you weren't using the debug menu getting killed at that point makes you have to go back to the beginning of the entire welcome to the machine level which itself is hard as balls even when invincible because you have to avoid getting squashed by walls as the screen erratically changes focus from one area to the next).

I was 8 when it came out. It was pretty self explanatory to me, and when I didn't know what to do, I'd fiddle around with everything until I figured it out.

Sorry Anon.

For me, it got to the point where Welcome to the Machine itself became a joke for me. I memorized every turn and where every enemy spawned in so I could kill it before it showed up on screen

But the level still takes six goddamn minutes to autoscroll through every single time. It's brutal.

Both are great, But I feel the cart music better manages to convey the feeling of whats going on in the game.

Like when you travel back in time, the cart music makes you feel like you just went from your own time (where you are comfortable since its your time) to a time very different from your own. so the feel is very threatening.

CD music just changes to some sort of exotic surfer music that totally fails to convey the feeling of being dropped in a very different and threatening situation.
