I'm about to launch Xenogears. Never played it. Now is my chance.

Did you guys like this game? Anything I should know before I get my feet wet?

Its a pretty good game. The camera angles are pretty bad and disc 2 is a mess. But it has great music, really fun gameplay and an interesting story. I'd say most of the hype is nostalgia, but if you like psx rpgs, you should really dig Xenogears.

I guess if you should know anything, its that there are a decent bit of missable items throughout the game. Most of them don't matter, but if you're a completionist it might perturb you later on finding out.

I'm not too anal about getting everything. I just want to enjoy it.

Hype can't be nostalgia. Hype is something marketing and media does.

Good deal, just take your time and enjoy the ride then.

Hype is something a person can do too. I've had some games ruined because someone talked it up, but they're memory was just rose colored.

Play in Japanese.

It's bad. Plot is typical JRPG with a helping of "kill God". Grandia 1 & 2 did it too. So did heaps of other JRPGs. Nothing original.

It's unfinished. The story is a complete and utter mess and makes no sense when you hit disc 2. Square pulled all resources from the development team and focused them on other games. Shame really, there's a decent game in there somewhere and disc 1 is fine, but overall it's a disaster.

First played it in maybe 2011. One of my favorite games ever
It's an incredibly good game and it's not dated at all besides MAYBE a few characrer designs

To be fair, the Xeno team messed up the deadline AGAIN while making Xenosaga and had to split the game into three episodes. They have a track record of doing this shit.

Just be prepared for major disappointment in disc 2. I didn't think it was as bad as people make it out to be, but it's probably because I was ready for it.

Overall a cool game, but as others have said it did have ome budget issues with Disc 2.
Also, not all party members are balanced stat wise, and you will notice some be more useful than others, especially late game.
Lastly, when you are done with the game, check out http://www.xgam.org/xenogears/resources/perfect_works/ .
It is the artbook translated in English, which helps explains some of things the game rushes through and what the creator had in mind with the series, before Square cancelled it.

Not a very good game, but it's a decent book.

hated it
the combo system sucks, there is no strategy or timing element involved in their use so they just end up being another attack commamd that needs you to press five buttons instead of one and watch an animation that gets old really fast
there's also a mechanic that lets you store points to unleash multiple combos at once, which is a waste of a turn except for one boss that counters your combos
the encounter rate is high, the enemy variety is low and the dungeons are really boring and repetitive
the story is interesting but poorly told and paced, with probably the slowest text speed in video game history and no way of adjusting the speed
the cherry on top of the shit sunday is the platforming, oh god the platforming
have fun getting interrupted by a random battle mid jump in the tower of babel and falling aaaaall the way down

the regular mech battles are ok (hey at least you have to think about your fuel supply) and that mech fighting mini game was fun

In Xenogears' defense, it's not actually random in Babel Tower. The encounters are all placed in the same spots every time you enter/re-enter the dungeon specifically to avoid this issue.

The problem, however, is going through the first time you'd never see this coming because almost every dungeon before this one had random encounters. The encounters are also slightly delayed (listen to the BGM/ambience fade just before the encounter actually begins) which leads to, as you said, encounters in midair.
