/vr/ - Retro Games

Start with 1. I recommend the GBA port for extra artwork and a better interface. Breath of Fire is a fun a series and has many callbacks between games, so part of the fun IA playing them in order to get them all. It also helps you appreciate how the series evolves. So I'd say go by the numbers and have fun.

If you can only play one game in the franchise though, I'd recommend Breath of Fire III. It's probably the best example of what the series is about. My personal favorite is II, but I know it's not the best game in the series.

Anyway, have fun, I love these series and I'm not normally someone who gets into turn based RPGs. It just has a charm that most tamed lack, and the soundtrack is amazing.

They're all quite different but here is my personal experience.

I have only played the playstation games, III and IV.

I first played III of the two. III is often regarded as the best of the series by many fans as well as serving as most people's intriduction. III is a good game, however it can be rather slow. The game itself plays fast but I find the pacing to be quite slow. The story is cut into two parts really, before and after a timeskip. Before the time skip is really where the problem can be. This part sets up a lot of the following events of the later half. Through this part you're swapping characters quite often and new things are introduced frequently. For some players they often find the game difficult to replay as this first half will feel like a tutorial they just can't skip. The later half though is quite excellent. There is a pretty infamous section here that most dread and even has entire guides dedicated to itself alone, veterans know which part I mean, but this is just one section. Basically what I mean to say is in III you might feel your not making progress. There's one sidequest that is introduced early on but doesn't get conpleted until near the ending. Now for gameplay its actually pretty standard. Three party members and your basic stuff, attack, magic, guard, items, and run. What makes combat interesting is essentially everyone is a blue mage. When you defend and a enemy does their action your character, depending on who is guarding, can learn the action the enemy had done. Skills are varied, some are incredibly helpful and others literally only waste turns as a joke. III is an excellent game, but a slow game.

Later I played IV, and holy shit did IV wow me. I initially dropped III but still wanted to try IV as the art just really interested me. IV actually has a greater focus on story then III, however its pacing is MUCH better then III. The story and game move at a good pace, new things are happening constantly and little time is wasted. Combat is also personally better. In IV you have a row system and combo system. Throughout the game you will get six party members. With rows three characters will be in the front while the others remain in the back. Basically while only three can act all six are in battle always and you can move characters to the back and front easily and as much as you want. For example if you see a character low on health you can put them in the back and have someone else go in front. Magic also works in combos. Magic has four alignments. Depending on the order you use magic the elements can link with one another. For example if you use a fire spell then a wind spell the wind spell will now become a new, stronger spell. The blue mage system returns as well. On top of an excellent battle system the story is just as good. The game offers an amazing mix of tension, tragedy, and true moral dilemmas. Despite all this I do have one nitpick. Around maybe the last fourth on your last huge goal the game kind of falls a bit. For around 4-5 hours dumb sidequests with little story occur. All I can say is muscle through this, the ending is phenomenal.

Overall I say this, try III first then IV. III is a bit of a slog but one worth slogging through. While III took a second attempt though IV had me instantly. Please play, or at least try, both of these amazing games.

It depends whether you are a jrpg veteran or a newbie that only plays the genre occasionally. If the former, play in order of release. If the later, start with III, and then IV-I-II. Only play V if you really liked the series, as it's very different from the others.

The GBA port doubles the experience and gold you receive in battles and adds a dash button, making the game way less tedious. And the interface is a huge improvement, in a game with each character having unique abilities going through image related menus both in battle and in the field leads to a ton of guesswork.

I guess these things are "casual" but they make the game more fun so. Who cares.

Audio is obviously worse but unless you're an audiophile it's not that bad, it's not like the Lunar GBA remake where the sound was barely recognizable.

The other extra feature is the ability to exchange items between carts, something I doubt anyone nowadays is doing, but if you do pull it off you can access secret items and that's always fun too.

I dunno, I like both Breath of Fire games more on the GBA due to the ability to dash and the experience rebance making them faster, more fun games. The SNES retranslation patch for II lets you dash too but in general I don't like the retranslation, it was very cringey at times and it's quite an accomplishment to pull that off considering how bad the original translation is.

I would say that the sprite work in IV is the best sprite work in a jrpg ever but everything else seemed sort of average. V is my favorite because the systems are amazing and so is the story, atmosphere, soundtrack, etc etc. not retro etc etc.

You can't expect most of these people to know or have good taste, so replies will be few and far between. There's, like, ABSOLUTELY no reason to play GBA version at all, it doesn't differ much from the SNES one. And where it differs, things that it does better can be achieved by other means.

If you prefer much better dialogue, same gameplay, go with re-translation. Make sure to download [original title screen music] pre-patched ROM because this version doesn't change original music in favor of some anime garbage.

If you prefer much better gameplay, same dialogue, go with randomizer [painsong]. There's some actually fun stuff that can be achieved with it, like usable originally unused spells.

And on top of these there's software that can patch your ROM to change exp/money gained form monsters if you feel the game a bit grindy: google "BoF2 Monster Editor".

If you're trying to argue that 2 is better because Habalk/Habaruku got justice while in 4 Yuna didn't then you don't understand Yuna's purpose in 4's story.

These characters have didn't purposes in their respective games. Habalk/Habaruku is meant to be a twist in that he isn't the true villain, the idea that a guy as evil as him isn't the true villain is suppose to be a twist. Meanwhile Yuna is not only the ultimate evil of his game but important to Fou's character. By having him live Fou's view is given equal ground, both hold their morals based on their experiences. If Yuna died then it would just be your generic "It's okay, all the bad guys died because of karma" which is a shitty concept. Yuna was never meant to be killed or even be redeemed. Fou was right, some people are just absolute pure evil. This creates the question "Are the good worth protecting even if the evil are saved as well or is evil worth punishing even should innocents become involved?"

Helping out Mina was the trigger for Ryu's entire quest, Bow obviously really liked Mina, and the entire subquest about gaining the Great Bird powers has tons of text elaborating how Nina and her family feel about their stiuation.

Whereas the only "development" Katt receives is acting like a goddamn retard and getting hit on by someone she doesn't like. Who then dies. She barely reacts to Tiga's death, Tiga's death impacts the PARTY's resolution to fight St. Eva more so than Katt. Hell look at the party's flavor text when you defeat Deathevan, Rand says "we did it mom", Nina thinks of Mina and says her sacrifice is worth it, and Katt's like LOL WHO KNEW AN IDIOT LIKE ME WOULD HELP OUT IN THIS HURR DURR, just like most of her flavor text in which she says she's dumb but she wants to fight alongside Ryu.

What he doesn't realize is that of course Nina's arc is more important overall. Whether he likes it or not Nina is the main heroine with about as much focus on Ryu typically. Even if you choose Kat as the "romance option" Nina is ultimately the more important and focused character since Ryu is the only one more important to the series then Nina.

He's a bit cringy with some unfunny jokes but this critique on the game really covers both its strengths and flaws quite well.

Thinking about it, every party member sans Bleu, Bow, Spar and Katt gets the spotlight during the quest that involves their past and personality.

Ryu: the later part of the story is about his destiny and his family.
Bow: I guess you can see a bit about his past in the opening, and half the game is about clearing his name, but besides the fact that he's Ryu's buddy he isn't developed or elaborated on at all. His dialogue during the last parts of the game is all about being a good buddy to Ryu and how proud he is of him, that's it.
Rand: the FarmTown/Namanda part of the story is all about his past and family life.
Katt: She only gets a slight spotlight on the coliseum arc, which she shares with Rand, and then on the CotLand part because of Tiga. The deepest she goes is talking about how she doesn't love Tiga. We learn nothing about her, throughout the game the most we get is that she thinks she's dumb but that she's kickass.
Nina: the Joker arc, the first trip to Windia and the Great Bird arc are all about her.
Jean: SimaFort is all about him, his clan and his family. The Nimufu arc sort of counts in an indirect way too, I guess.
Sten: HighFort is all about him, his clan and his past.
Spar: no real development for him. You do spend time looking to free him, and the Gandaroof arc is only vaguely related to him, but his growth towards understanding emotion happens in flavor text with no real spotlight.

I'd say that Nina indeed gets the most development outside of Ryu.

I played I, III and IV.

I to III seems to happen in the same universe, but the stories are self contained, so you can start from wherever you want (but you might fail to get some references to past games). IV and V are completely separated from previous installments, so you won't lose much starting from there (again, there're a couple of cameos, but none important).

They did the most things right in 3, there's growing up, there's adventure, there's loss, there's mystery, the apprentice stuff is fun, best dragon system in the series so far, fighting is fun. Despite some bad shit happening it still feels upbeat.

4 looks nice, the dragon system is kinda meh however. The whole atmosphere feels like a walk to the gallows from start to end.

I like BoFIII but I feel I have to agree with these guys. The problem is, as they said, some genes are simply useless. In theory its a great system I feel but its execution is flawed. The problem with the dragon systems of every game is it is inconvienent for regular encounters making dragon forms seen only for bosses. A good system would be helpful in both regular and boss battles.

I've played both III and IV last year for PS Vita. I had already played the III for PS1. They're both good games. The IV is amazing in terms of animations.

It's funny you say you don't like IV for it's Asian inspiration, that's why a lot love it. BoFI-III had a pretty European medieval fantasy setting with light sci fi aspects but the Asian influence was really unique and interesting. There's a lot of good symbolism not just from Japanese culture but various Asian cultures abd it all feels respectful. On top of that I myself just personally love the battle system. Maybe give this a read, it has a lot of interesting points on the game.
