God Tier: Official controller with tight joystick
High Tier: Hori Mini Pad 64
Pretty Good Tier: N64 Stick Converter PCB v3
Not Bad Tier: TRAXXAS shock gasket joystick fix
Shit Tier: Epoxy joystick repair, tape joystick repair, aftermarket N64 controller, chink joystick replacement

>> No.3975359

They aren't as precise as official brand new N64 controllers.

Thank you. Nothing worse than shelling out lots of cash except doing it and then finding that it still won't make the cut anyway.

That's like getting punched in the gut and then kicked in the balls.

thanks, understood, sounds like a Hori is worthwhile then if I can find one in good condition.

I really want one of those Steel Sticks but they aren't currently available. Is there no alternative?

>> No.3975387

>>3975372
Hori sticks from Japan are pretty much teh best original condition N64 controllers you'll be able to get

N64 sticks have always been raped. Making them totally unusable in a lot of cases.

There are definitely a bit small for the hands

I don't like the placement of the z triggers and the dpad is impossible to use properly

Steel Sticks is the latest iteration of the pipe dream to improve the OEM joystick.

It's my favorite N64 controller. Maybe I'm a casual but I don't find it any less precise than a stock controller, just far more pleasant to use (and since the current SM64 speedrunning record holder uses one, it can't be that bad). Though it's true that they're very small and the d-pad sucks.

i like the idea of it. Nobody has brand new n64 controllers anymore and those that are still good are on borrowed time.

i don't think i have played any 64 games that even use the dpad

Main one for me is Mischief Makers. I use a stock controller for that game only, Hori for everything else.

Hori Mini Pad 64 is the single greatest N64 controller ever.

The only complaints (which are minor) is that its a bit small (which you get used to) and that the D-Pad is in an awkward place (for games that require D-Pad as primary movement control; but there is so few of those)

For everything else, its the single best controller for the N64. I have several of them from Ebay.

Worth it. I'd nab them up. A little expensive but the best you can get.

If you are going to dump the cash to get them, may as well get them in your favorite color. The transparent red and green are dope. The black and clear ones are also great.

lmao holy shit imagine being this delusional.

that said, it's probably the best current alternative to OEM.

better than original ones IMO

There is this guy with this replacement stick project, he is working on it for months now, really perfecting it with materials and details:

my understanding is that this is still not available

and even if it were, if he's replicating the real thing, won't it degrade as quickly as the real thing?

>if he's replicating the real thing, won't it degrade as quickly as the real thing?
Yes it will, which is fine, because the real thing doesn't degrade that fast if you aren't a fucking gorilla and take care of it properly. Silicone grease it up and avoid mario party minigame bullshit and it will easily last 1500+ hours of gameplay.

The reason he wants to replicate the real thing is because of its superior function, not because of its durability.

It is tho, unless you can name something better

He did name one you fucking dunce.

The OEM controller has an objectively better deadzone and angle step range. Hori is way too fucking sensitive and imprecise.

>The OEM controller has an objectively better deadzone and angle step range. Hori is way too fucking sensitive and imprecise.

No way. What type of shit Hori did you end up with?

A functional hori 64 pad has incredible precision and accuracy. The tightest controller for the N64 bar none.

Though, the original controller (new) can be just as good.

No, that isn't correct. You have a fundamental misunderstanding of how the hori joystick works.

Hori range and angles are mapped badly. Just accept it. It's a fine controller most of the time, but sucks ass for small, precise adjustments.

Only ever buy non-official accessory by Hori or better ASCII where there is some for that console. Everything else is just trash.

Yes. The guy behind it is a competitive Smash 64 player. DI destroys sticks in that game, but none of the currently available replacement sticks are as good as originals. Durability was not the goal.

okay, but it still seems like the steel sticks have potential to be superior. But neither are readily available right now, which sucks.
