GAUNTLET WIKI: http://vgauntlet.wikia.com/wiki//v/_Gauntlet_Wiki

Good evening, /vr/others! Welcome to the Retro Game Gauntlet!

Start at NES, and work through in the following order:

NES
SNES
GB/GBC OR Sega Game Gear
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA OR Sega Master System
Commodore 64 OR Commodore Amiga
Playstation 1 OR Nintendo 64

You have three days to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length).

Select your system here:
http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html

You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator:
http://s3kr.it/systems/

AND BRING ME SCREENSHOTS PARKER

ok, so I was banned for the last three days thanks to a silly joke. Technically it WAS against the rules but it was harmless, though I'm not really angry or anything. Anyhow, moving on, I didn't beat Kendo Rage in time, so time to roll for NES again. Oh my dear NES, how I love you and hate you.

Jesus is down! This game was kinda interesting but mostly stupid and tedious. It was basically a pixel-hunt in text adventure form, doing the same commands multiple times until finally finding the one that unlocks the next bit. Was it worth it to get a single screencap every 20 minutes or so where characters say things like, "I need to contact the Jesus"? Yes. Yes it was. Alright, so you're a Wizard, who has been hired by the people of the Towne (yes, Towne) to hunt down and defeat your arch-rival Nemesis. This is a sequel it seems,as you've kicked his ass once before.

You start off in the Towne Cemetery, and as it's the tutorial level, you get a fair few power-ups. Enemies have a tendency to sneak up on you, as you need to collect gems for them to appear in your Crystal Ball (bottom right corner).

There are destroyable walls to be found, which lead you to keys, treasure which you can accidentally destroy and the occasional hint scroll.

Your basic attack is a fireball. There's one-use items that let you do other things. Zappers give you a rapid fire burst, Xterminators spams them in a circle around you.

Apart from being easily ambushed, it's not too bad so far.

That level was easy. With the purple Gem I can see enemies coming on the Crystal Ball. The dots are pretty tiny, easy to miss if you expect them to be the size of the big gold point that is probably North. It was all identical looking, ivy-covered walls (except for the destroyable plain brick walls) , alternating between narrow cramped twisty corridors and wide spaces with lots of enemies.

Also tested out the Zapper and Xterminator. Xterminator will be good if I get surrounded, but wasn't the wall of fireballs I was hoping for, just 8 or so shots. The Zapper is overkill at early levels, as the strongest enemy so far dies to 2 shots, which is less than a second of the 2-3 second stream of fire, and if you're quick on the Spacebar it doesn't really matter. Be good for bosses though

>> No.371006

>>370987

I should mention that you need coloured keys to get through doors. For example, you need a RED KEY to get through the end level door. The RED KEY is hidden behind a door which requires a BLUE KEY to open. The BLUE KEY is behind a destroyable wall. You'll end up running back and forth over and over looking for that one wall you're yet to blow up, to get a key to get past a door to get a key to get ast a door to get a key to finish the level.

Oh, there's no mini-map, so it's easy to get lost during this back and forth. My only real nitpick at this game so far. Considering it was made in '92, I'll cut it some slack.

Simple again. Almost feel bad for going Novice. Almost. New to this level are the Skeletons. 3 hits to kill, and they're avoid detection from your Crystal Ball until you get the gem in the area.

Level's are so short I'm including 2 here in 1 collage. You finally meet an enemy capable f ranged attacks. They drop in 1 hit, but they can be a nuisance. Also Nemesis really likes putting up picture of himself in the crypt. They're everywhere. you get to blow a shit ton of them up, though.

The main crypt is more of the same, except with added pentagrams and sacrificial alters covered in blood for extra evil.

I'm hoping that there is 6 more scrolls means there's actually a fair few levels left, and that I wont be done with this in a few hours time

You then jump down a well, and into the Ancient Aquaduct. New enemy type, new Gem. And exploding walls all over the place. It's complexity lays in it all looks the fucking same and it's easy to get lost.

Into the Orc Mines now. Last Gem is around here somewhere. As you can see,I'm loaded to bare with stuff to use, and I'm almost halfway through, if the number of scroll is any indication

It's one of the earliest 3D FPS games. It's the second game in the series: It's first was Pre-Wolfenstein.

It's not bad. It's incredibly short, items are everywhere, everything dies to 1 or 2 hits until you get to later levels, where you have powerful attacks coming out of everywhere. Oh, there's no music, only the occasional footsteps you make, and it's easy to get lost.

I've played much worse, but it's to going to be on my must replay list. There are secret levels though. But considering you're given the God Modeand Free Item's cheat when you get to war there, ehhhhh.

6/10, not sorry I played it, but would've liked it to have lasted longer

This is the level I was on before I left for work. Played it for about an hour before leaving. An hour after playing it after work, still here.

Shit is infuriating. There's no way to get power-ups in this level, as you need to merge same coloured enemies into 2x2 squares, which isn't doable with the layout. Every time the ball hits the paddle, it speeds up. After 10, you need to be hell fast. After 15, pray it doesn't hit something on the way down after you've lined yourself up,because you won't be fast enough to move into position again. After 20, Tzeench himself couldn't know where it's going to go.

I'm going to start again. The levels change, hopefully next time it won't be so bullshit

There isn't an actual grab button that I'm aware of and it's more that if you're close enough, you just automatically grapple the opponent and can then throw them. But it seems more like it's down to luck whether you grapple them or they grapple you, and I didn't see any way to break out of a grapple.

Gameplay is pretty simple so far. The manual that came with it recommended using Slings on everyone. It's solid advice: it lets you end encounters before they have a chance to attack back.

I've created a party of 4 with names taken from FF games. Butz is my Fighter, using a Staff, Locke the Thief is there to disable the traps on chests. Cecil the Paladin is there to kick ass and heal the party, with Windu for magical support.

Magic is funny as it requires items to cast spells as well as MP. There's 2 item, Nuore and Magic Ore. Low level spells need Nuore, I assume higher level ones require Magic Ore. Enemies drop the stuff so it's not too hard to keep supplied

Trainer found, party levelled. You get a few points to boost your stats and skills, as well as more HP, MP and new spells for the casters.

Mindu the Mage can do a lot of damage with his spells, and has a fair amount of MP. Most enemies drop ores to use as well, so you can nova a bit. It's almost mandatory forstronger enemies like rats.

Cecil is pretty useful to have as a healer. He's a mix of Monk (closer to a DnD Cleric than DnD Monk) and Fighter so can't heal or fight as well, but holds up both roles nicely.

Managed to find some loot as well. Some magic weapons, magic armor, potions, a Key Ring, and some candles. Candles are goo,d they make it so you can actually see shit.

Understandable. The Trainer's are how you level up in this game.

Also, I'm in a bit of a quandary. The version I have is the 'Full' version, which has a built in guide. A rather comprehensive one, including a full walk-through. While clearly the walkthrough is out of the question, would using the many maps that come with this game be considering 'with assistance'? They're absent from the shareware version, but I have the list of them right here in front of me. Itwould serve only to stop getting so fucking lost all the time. Just half thetime, since it can't read where you are in game ad you have to know where you are and navigate the old-fashioned way. Pic Related: it's the menu you get when you hit F8

Interesting little game. You set your cannons inside your base and fire on the ships.

Once they're destroyed you fix your walls with a little tetris mini-game. (Ten seconds to fit tetris like pieces together to close the wall around your castle) If you fail to close it completely you lose.

I guess the idea is to build out and capture the other castles so you can build more cannons.

What's the deal with the lack of medals here? Making your own medals after you beat a game was the best part of the original gauntlet...

Alright, took me awhile to find the game, and then find time to play it. Here we go, back from a break and taking on the C64 with "Miner 2049er"

It's sorta like a mix between Donkey Kong and Pacman. You have to touch every area of the level, if you collect an item, the creatures "turn green" and you can kill them. Other than that, just run and jump!

That "Magic wand" is a heal spell. It uses some of your MP (which you can't see how much you have unless you're in the Inn). As you level up you learn more spells, like fireball (I decided to use my actual starsign, picked gemini and started out with it, it oneshots everything in the first continent) and cure poison.
I once rolled this game, but I got sick of it. Apparently it's not too long of a game if you know what to do, so finding that out is the most important thing.
That and a fair bit of grinding.

Crystal Mines, checking back in. I'm... kind of getting the hang of things. Full disclosure: I'm using the level select option (press a or b on the level screen) for continuation purposes.

Basically, this game has 100 levels with death around every corner, 5 lives and three normal continues. I'm sure it's possible to beat it without using the level select trick (press a or b on the first level screen to go up/down 5 levels), but it would take a very long time playing this game to do so.

Basically, I'm fighting my way through 5 levels at a time. The final twenty have to be done in one miserable stretch, however.
