No, it's a piece of shit nintendshit proprietary ZIP disk, literally the worst possible media format you could ever implement in to a children's toy

Could'ev amazing for N64 graphic with zipdrive
but eveything end because Dreemcast come.

Dumb gimmick system, but showed that even Nintendo games would be better developed directly for PC.

Nintendo should have focused on getting the N64 a CD drive to begin with instead of fucking about with the Virtual Boy

>Dumb gimmick system
>Anything I don't like is a gimmick

Being able to make your own tracks for F-Zero and save them is pretty cool, or there was the Mario Artist series, which let you do everything from making music, to painting, to even creating 3d models and small games.

It could also be used to load expansions for games, like Ura Zelda.

Did it have drawbacks? Yes, it probably would have been a expensive, but overall it had potential to be a pretty cool add-on.

>> No.3962882

I'm convinced that Nintendo fucking hates money. If they released Ura Zelda and the sequel to Super Mario 64 on the virtual console, literally everybody would pay to download them. Just to experience them.

>> No.3962884

>>3962874
Exactly. Imagine if they had made a decent CD drive for the N64 instead of this POS. They would have made a fortune if the drive came bundled with a game like Final Fantasy 7.

>> No.3962887

>>3962874
The whole point of the 64DD was that it could save data.
That doesn't work with CDs.

CD-RW wouldn't be suitable for that either, since they can only be re-written a limited number of times, and require more sensitive optics.

>> No.3962904

>>3962887
Memory cards, friend. The N64 had one! Not being able to have games like Metal Gear: Solid and Final Fantasy 7 wrecked the N64. They would have beaten Sony (at least in that generation) if they made a good external CD drive for the N64.

>> No.3962913

My guess is that somebody who worked on the Famicom Disk System was still floating the same kind of ideas and after the Sony thing and Nintendo developing an irrational hatred of the CD ROM format, suddenly a new FDS didn't seem so dumb until they actually did some developing and marketing on it and realized that yeah it actually was dumb.

>> No.3962918

>>3962904
The memory card stores a whole whopping 32KB.
Thats nowhere near enough space to store things like custom F-Zero tracks.
Mario Kart fills an entire controller pack just for timetrial ghosts.
The 64DD had a much larger capacity and would be better suited for these large saves and/or user made content.

Why didn't they give up on it? It was released barely ahead of the PS2 with its DVD drive.
Releasing it and the eight games took res resources that could have been better elsewhere.

Hard disk
Floppy disk
Zip disk
Laser Disc
Digital Versatile Disc
Mini Disc
Blu-ray Disc

There's a lot of disk/disc drives aside from compact discs. Disc shape is used for obvious reasons.

>> No.3963767

I own a jap n64 and a dd just for the fzero map editor. it is pretty neat hardware and software considering the time.

you could use zip disks with an n64 using z64 or v64 copiers to transfer/play roms of gaes.

I believe the reason nintendo avoided using CD-ROMs is the same reason microsoft tried to push HD DVD vs bluray, to not have to pay royalties on each disc to their shared competitor, sony.

The 64DD flopped because it was an overpriced gimmick. Doshin 64 was the only actual game, the Fzero editor is cool but pointless, and Mario Artist honestly who cares about. 64DD showed Nintendo leave their games fairly modular which is great for modding, but Nintendo are too into their closed ecosystem.

>> No.3964103

No.

Also DDs don't work anymore because they required online connectivity to setup, so dont waste your time. Even when the servers were up it was hard for importers to use because it required a Japanese credit card to do anything with.

There was also SimCity 64 and maybe something else.
Also, Mario Artist has some dope music.

A better solution would have been to implement 1MB of SRAM (same capacity as PS1 MC) in the CD add-on, and sell higher capacity (like, say, 4MB) flash memory cards that plug into the cart slot for backing up CD memory.

You know, like the Saturn did.

not true at all bro

i found and bought an jap n64 with a DD and f-zero as a bundle and it all works flawlessly. i can make and save and load my custom tracks.

what went 'down' was randnet, an online service nintendo sold/bundles subscriptions to with the DD. randnet required the 64dd modem(which I do not have or need because its useless now). the randnet subscription gave you access to an internet browser, some forums, and some pre-Mii custom avatar features.

the only GAME to really use randnet was mario artist game, but just for sharing creations, I believe you can still play the game just fine by itself, but I do not have a copy.

there were future plans to use the modem for more games but the 64dd was discontinued before any of them ever saw the light of day.

i am sure if there were more DDs out there hackers would be able to get the randnet modem and browser running again like people have with sega dreamcast's web browser and modem.
