I just finished an Eye of the Beholder runthrough. I like to use the default NPCs as my final group with an editor that fixed Beohram as a Paladin and Ileria as female.

Now the big question is which of those four do I take into EoB2?

This reminds me of a game I used to try to play a lot when I was a kid.

I think in that game the first area was like a room with portraits on the wall or statues, and you would pick your character (characters?) from them.

One of them I'm totally sure was a lizardman warrior type guy, there was also a human warrior, and I think an elf, a dwarf, and like other classes (Magician? Archer?)

maybe the elf was the archer

it was so long ago I can barely remember

There is no reason to get a pure thief.
In the EOB series are better party would be
>Human Fighter
>Dwarf Fighter
>Human Cleric
>Multiclassed Elf Magic-User/Thief
Don't ever hire an NPC before EOB3 as they steal EXP. In EOB3 itself the best NPCs are the Ranger and Paladin both with Halberds as they can attack from the backrow there (but not in the earlier EOB games).

Now in Pool of Radiance the best party would be
>4 Half-Elf Fighter/Cleric
>2 Half-Elf Fighter/Mage
Create a new party in Curse of the Azure Bonds rather than exporting. The extra save throws from the Paladin class are important in the later games but you can't create Paladins in Pool of Radiance.

>I thought KotC was considered good or is that typical codexian contrarianism
Codex actually likes KotC on average.

Personally, I didn't like it. Its main weakness is probably that its creator did not really understand 3rd edition's flaws and unlike Temple of Elemental Evil, it goes all the way to the level cap, which means the caster/martial gap is in full effect.

Also, due to implementation, it loses a lot of 3E's strengths which is the bonkers multi-classing making the character development boring - most feats are rather negligible, except for the broken item crafting ones which trivializes its attempts at resource management - KoTC is pretty sadistic and loves doing things like trapping you in dungeons away from resting areas.

Not sure why it's even brought up, seeing as how it's not even a "spiritual remake" of the Gold Box games (all dungeon crawling is in an Ultima-like viewpoint instead of First Person)

>I don't understand, what's the restriction for grandmastery in bg2? I put 4 pips in maces, dualed into cleric and after reactivating fighter's abilities can't put it in maces anymore.
You won't be able to get 5 pips if you dual to cleric, you have to do it while you're a fighter. You also won't get those pips back until you reach the same amount of experience you had as a fighter while you're a cleric, so after getting like 1.25 million exp, your cleric will suddenly just get all your fighter THAC0, attacks per round, and weapon proficiency.

Anyway, if you're going to start as a fighter and dual to anything, make sure you start with a kit like Berserker or Kensai and make it to at least level 13 to get the full benefits.

The standard rule is that if you're going to dual to Thief, start as the Kensai, if you're gonna dual to pretty much anything else, start as Berserker instead.

Even if KotC capped much earlier, spellcasters would still dominate the game. Knights bring fuck all to the table past the early game, and really? They're not better to have in a party than a Cleric is at any point. Just comparing raw features, they have a tiny lead in HP, 1 BAB every 4 levels, martial weapons, and bonus feats in a game with a tiny handful of worthwhile feats. Plus 4 against almost everything your ever want to fight, absolutely btfos undead with sunray, a level 7 cleric spell that you normally don't get until late and does the bonus damage against undead is unresistable. Improve haste fighter with belm in offhand kills kangaxx in demilich form in one round before he gets even one imprisionment. Only one handed sword that can compare in the base game is thunderfury.

And you can get it straight out of the first dungeon without having to fight anything.

The one very small niche I can think of for Knights is if you need Archery from round 1 before your Cleric buffs go up. Like that one early room where there's a dragon and you're given Dragon-slaying ammo to deal with it.

But yeah, they're really terrible because this is 3E

>>3913401
>Why is 3rd edition bad?
Bad balance even if you just use the core books.

Martials are terrible because enemies start to get HP bloated past a certain point and most Martial class have no utility outside of hitting things... and I can't even say your average Fighter hits things that hard either unless it's a stupidly optimized one-trick pony build.

It tends to be much easier to use "Save-Or-Dies" spells to take down monsters, and then Casters also have all the utility spells like Divinations, Flying, Knock (Unlock), Summons (a Druid's free built-in animal companion is almost as strong as a Fighter, let alone if he decides to summon more allies) and so on.

Still, assuming everyone is on the same page, you can have some really fun munchkin-y hijinks with 3E, so I can't call it a complete disaster.

(Pathfinder, a "spiritual successor" system, does not fix these issues, even though they claim they do)

3E ends up being a bit better in videogame forms because the "optimal" playstyle in P&P is actually very tedious for CRPGs and being combat focused, spellcasters can't pull off out-of-battle shenanigans that they can in P&P.

My personal opinions on the other versions in the following post.

Opinions on D&D systems
Basic: It's hard to describe...

I want to say the closest comparison is probably what the original Rogue videogame was channeling in the form of an P&P RPG.

There's not much character development that we think of in RPGs todays - it's probably the most "Mcguyver your way out of trouble through off-the-wall thinking" system rather than trying to Math monsters to death.

2E: More player options, but at this point, the system is clearly kind of a Frankenstein monster of hodgepodge subsystems clobbered together. It does achieve a twisted sense of balance somehow as long as you don't mind the fact that there's no real unified structure to how and why things work.

4E: This one is really controversial. For some reason, it gets a "World of Warcraft edition" moniker from people who have likely not played either WoW or 4E when really it's probably closer to something like Final Fantasy Tactics.

It's tightly focused on grid-based tactical battles with defined roles for classes in order to encourage in-Battle Teamwork for the whole party (where older D&D editions tries to do so by having classes be good in battles or out of it)

Very love it or hate it

5E: 3E in terms of rules-writing with a more 2E level of balance. I find it acceptable, but some people think it's bland.

(I forgot - one thing I will give 3E for is that it tries to unify a lot of the behind the scenes decisions making, concepts like "Rolling high is good, rolling low is bad" where 2E would decide which one it is based on which side of the bed it woke up in the morning.

Sometimes it lead to issues, for example, it's one of the contributors to Martials being weaker as Fighter and Thieves needed less EXP to level in pre-3E editions compared to Wizards and all classes in 3E now have the same leveling curve.

But in terms of learning the rules, it's really appreciated. All editions past 3E tend to be a bit more professional in this regard)

>regardless of what happened, you always had a choice to say fuck off. in dragonspear, you don't, just alternative ways of saying yes, or i'll do that later.
Aside from Torment, virtually all of the Infinity Engine games had this problem, or even stuck you with one-sided responses.

In Icewind Dale, there's a priestess in the first village who goes on a tangent about how sectarianism is human nature, and there's nothing morally questionable about the tribes incessantly trying to slaughter each other. The only responses you're given are to agree with her, or sperg out for no apparent reason. Choosing the latter makes her boast that you've just proven her point, then she ignores you.

>>3916526

It's not a big deal that the character is a tranny. Stop trying to draw so much attention to your anti-SJW political bullshit. The point is that Dragonspear in its totality is a poorly conceived expansion with lazy writing. There are dozens of better examples you could have pulled from the game, but you choose that one with the sole intention of trying to stir up shit over something that should be a non-issue.

I would say it's less like Final Fantasy Tactics and more like World of Warcraft. Classes are literally split into the same sort of Tank, Support and DPS paradigm. Fighters and Paladins are Defenders; Bards and Clerics are Leaders; Barbarians, Rangers and Rogues are Strikers; Druids and Wizards are Controllers; et cetera. Then they all have MMO ability cooldowns, like at will, per encounter, per rest and so on. Everyone has magic powers and healing, and class identity has been destroyed in the sake of balance.

>>3916563
No, the fact that there is a tranny in SoD is a big deal. It demonstrates that Beamdog fundamentally doesn't understand the setting that they're writing for. Switching genders in the Forgotten Realms isn't a big deal to where people would develop that mental illness. The signature character played by the creator Ed Greenwood Elminster has flipped genders multiple times. In the very game series that they wrote for Edwin was gender swapped into Edwina. So the issue isn't that they included someone with a made-up modern social illness, it's that they included it in a setting that it literally wouldn't exist in.

Mechanically, close to a 3E without broken spells - if you can make an convincing case for using a skill on your skill list or a stat check, then you roll that. Otherwise the Dungeon Master Guide has rules for improvising outcomes.

A lot of "out of combat effects" from previous versions such as Speak With Dead got rolled into Rituals and take a lot more in-game time to perform so they aren't the magic bullets they are in previous editions.

D&D's creators always encouraged things like gender equality, going as far as to use she / her as gender-neutral pronouns throughout their sourcebooks. 5E got more explicit in saying players could have characters of any sexual identity. So Baldur's Gate retroactively receiving these types of characters isn't anything that deviates from the D&D setting or ethos in any way, even if EE might have shoehorned those characters into the game for the wrong reasons.

Good job putting words in my mouth once again. My argument was never much more than your average joe isn't going to have access to a wizard who will do this thing for him out of charity. Therefore trannies could exist, because magic is not a reasonable option for most people.

>Finally, even an unskilled peasant doing general labor would still be able to afford the Girdle in approximately five years.

Having established that a girdle that switches gender is valued at 200gp, and that's a magic item with infinite charges, how much do you suppose a single transmutation is going to run you?

And why do you assume that Mages and magic are so unbelievably rare in the Forgotten Realms that people would have no access to them? Have you ever even touched a book from the setting? Even if you hadn't and had only played the games, in what town are spellcasters scarce? Nashkel might be the smallest town represented in either game and there are no fewer than SIX spellcasters found there in the vanilla version of the game alone.

And honestly, expecting your average person to not know about magic? With the likes of Halruaa, Thay, Evermeet and such existing where more commoners use magic than don't? If anything, I would say your average commoner probably imagines that magic can do even more than it's supposedly able to since they see it constantly in their day to day lives.

Just don't prevent (by killing her) Selia from teleporting out after getting the ring back from her. If you do, it fucks the quest (or at least gives you the wrong conversation with Xan) because it assumes you killed her without getting the ring.

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 are great places to start. It's got a great mix of combat mechanics and story, and the rules of D&D are implemented in a very well-realized way. The games are huge RPGs by themselves, but taking your character through the whole journey is one of the most satisfying and incredible things in RPG history.

The other infinity engine games are pretty great, but Planescape leans much more towards an adventure game with the huge amounts of dialogue and story. Icewind Dale is the opposite, focusing on tactical combat over almost everything else.

The gold box games are awesome, but use very old D&D rules. What I really love about them is how you can have absurdly huge battles, and high-level characters are unstoppable. By the end of Pools of Radiance you will easily be one-shotting dragons and taking out huge swaths of enemies with fireballs.

Eye of the Beholder 1 and 2 are some of the absolute finest dungeon crawls of the era.

Also check out the Capcom beat-em-ups that were licensed from D&D. Grab a couple friends and you're guaranteed an afternoon of fun.

As a couple of people have already suggested, the Baldurs gate series is probably the best place to start.

Baldurs Gate 1 can be little slow and frustrating at first thanks to everyone having a low hit chance and very low HP but once you get your party to level 2 or 3 it should go a little smoother.

Baldurs gate 2 is an upgrade from 1 in almost every aspect and is possibly one of the best games ever made.

The new characters are pretty easily ignored, it even tells you who they are when you start up the game so you can watch for them and give them a wide berth without needing to mod them out. It might even be worth letting them join temporarily so you can steal all their gear. One of the best things about EE is that the existing characters and writing are left untouched so you shouldn't need to worry about that.

EE also comes with some (by the latest version, pretty major) UI changes and bugfixes that many people (eg this guy: >>3925089) dislike. If anything, I'd be looking for a mod to reverse those changes.

Is it just me or would this game actually be -easier- with 2 characters rather than 6

I keep thinking of restarting just to play a F/M/T with Viconia as a Ranger/Cleric playing waifu.

Like before one million XP it's not such a big deal, things scale in such a way that getting 3x XP isn't going to give you more than 2 or 3 levels, but once you're at 2m and realize you could be 8 levels higher right now, squarely in epic mage territory shitting all over everything it's like

why did I even have a party

they're not even that cool to hang out with most of the time!

maybe I'll just restart and speed through BG1 until I get to the cave of bodybuilding and watch Viconia and Charname kill a thousand flesh golems. Or maybe bring Imouto too.

I could have Charname and Viconia getting obscenely powerful, just picking up each other third wheel party member to go through their quest before dropping them, picking up Imoen again at the end.

Seriously why the fuck does Cleric/Mage only get bonus spells for Cleric, like obviously if I had the choice of which one got the spells it would be Mage

if I ever do multiclass again I'm going to cut my party in half as a rule.

Get Jaheira to churn out a few summons before you enter the fight to draw fire away from her and the rest of the party and then start the fight with her casting insect plague on the warden. Once he's hit with insect plague, the fight should be considerably easier. IIRC he has a mislead in a contingency so hopefully you have a thief who can detect illusions or Keldorn who can cast true seeing to get that out of the way quickly.

If you're feeling cheesier, you could get her to cast farsight where you know he will be and then march summons in there to drain his spells and deal a little bit of damage then rest and repeat until he's dead. The argument can be made that the best Two-Hand Sword or Halberd is better than the best Quarterstaff, and they probably are, but you can't backstab with those.

I personally really like that OST, but some people scoff at the idea of electronic music in a fantasy game. I kind of liked the discrepancy.

How the fuck do I play this game?

I have these two random followers, Montaron and Xzar who just want to get to these mines, random people will come up to me and randomly fight me because I have a bounty on my head for some reason, some Garrick guy wants me to go to some girl named Silke who tries to trick me into fighting innocent people, but she kills me super easily if I deny her.
Going in between towns, there's hordes of hobgoblins and kobolds and they randomly wreck my shit. Dark Souls taught me to try and fish them out one by one to kill them more easily, but it's still luck of the draw.

I'm going into a next town and jrpg logic tells me that better gear is available at the merchant than at the previous town, but everyone still sells "helmet, leather armor, axe" like there;s no stat change.

I'm slightly aware of THAC0 in trying to get that number lower, but I'm still used to jrpg mechanics (like defense, magic defense, etc)
I feel like I'm wandering aimlessly in that I'm going to end up in a later-game area than I'm supposed to (think graveyard/skeletons in Dark Souls) only I don't know if it's actually later-level-hard or just I'm-a-stupid-fucking-idiot-who-can't-into-crpg-hard.

>> No.3944535

>>3944506
The bounties are a plot point that come up a bit later.

Silkie is best taken down with a hail of arrows and evocation spells. Random encounters are a pain, I'll admit that. The gear you want is magical, ignore the shop trash but for god's sake stockpile arrows and give everyone a ranged weapon of some kind. Those few attacks can make a huge difference in the earlygame.

THAC0 and AC are a measure of accuracy more than anything else. "Defense" isn't really a thing in D&D, but "evasion" certainly is.

The game is pretty hard at the beginning since your HP is single digits at best. Talk to everybody and do quests for experience, it'll make a huge difference.

>> No.3944537

>>3944506

Fighters are your meat shields. Your guys are really weak at level one, so do the easy quests to get exp.

In a low level party, magic users are incredibly useful. You can't do much damage with magic missile, so you want to focus on spells to debuff and knock out the enemy. Sleep, color spray, entangle are all great. If you have Jaheira, she can use Bless to buff the party. Bows are really really good in the first game. Use that pause button, play tactically and treat every low level encounter as extremely dangerous. It's classic D&D rules and let me tell you this shit does not hold your hand.

Is everything that is essentially important for experience added to the journal?

There's no chance that I won't miss something because it wasn't added to a journal for some reason?

>for god's sake stockpile arrows and give everyone a ranged weapon of some kind

Figures, I made my main character a fighter because I swear anons were saying it was "easy for first-timers"

>> No.3944550

>>3944506
You won't see as much improvement in gear as in a jrpg.
Your next upgrade will be +1 weapons/armor which give you 1 more AC or THAC0 and damage. +2 is considered to be very good in the game, and +3 is the best you'll ever see.

As other said before, your HP will drastically increase and you won't die so quickly. Bear with it until you get to level 2 or 3.

Baldur's Gate is completely playable by modern standards (one of my genuine favorites), you're just not used to how 2nd Ed. D&D feels.

Stick with BG1, it gets better. Kite shit with ranged weapons and what not until you get in the groove. Keep lots of saves.

and uh, be aware that some NPC's aren't going to get along with others.

The biggest issue for me was the fact that you've got these enormous levels of the dungeon, which look the same, room after room, floor after floor. I don't know how to explain it, but I guess I feel like the party you meet is sorta like a friendship you form with them. Like, they're not just random npcs that you can somewhat control. The thing is, I'm killing so many things now that I can't carry anything anymore. I need to sell stuff, I'm in Bergerost and there's no dedicated merchant. There's a hammersmith and one of the bartenders in one of the bars, those are the only people I can sell stuff to.

What's wrong with them?
You can also sell stuff to the wizard near Beregost, merchant in Nashkel and a merchants at the Nashkel Carnival. Friendly Arm inn or Ulgoth's Beard are also a good places.

Merchants don't have prices based on item type; as in, you don't need to save your weapons for a blacksmith, so long as a merchant will purchase a certain type of item, they'll give you the standard price.

In BG2, there are a handful of merchants with better prices, but I don't think that exists in BG1 (see http://www.forgottenwars.com/bg1/miscellany.htm and scroll down, officer Vai doesn't really count because she only exists to buy bandit scalps.)

Depreciation for selling the exact same item to a vendor repeatedly means you should try to use different merchants to sell the common items you'll get a lot of, though note that the rate of depreciation varies between different shops and that it goes down based on how many separate times you've sold that item to them, rather than per item, so you can sell a dozen shortbows at full price, so long as you select them all at once.

>> No.3966730

>>3966648
It's not so much the pricing, it's that almost all of them will only take certain things, like the blacksmith will take weapon stuff, but won't take scrolls or scalps, and the other merchant won't take weapons and/or this and that. I was curious if there was just a general merchant that I can just sell ALL my stuff to instead of having to walk all over the place and do it little by little.

>> No.3966873

>>3966730
>the blacksmith will take weapon stuff, but won't take scrolls or scalps, and the other merchant won't take weapons and/or this and that.

This was actually standard practice for a lot of RPGs in the 90s.
See the Might and Magic series for example.

Each town has merchants that you can sell your crap to, it's just a matter of memorizing which ones will take what.

Nashkel's main merchant accepts almost everything, and then there's also the various merchants at the carnival.

In Beregost, you've got the smithy on the east side and the bartender on the west side at Feldepost's Inn.

High Hedge for all your pre-Baldur's Gate magical needs.

Friendly Arm Inn is pretty much a general store merchant.

>If Officer Vai is already gone, you can continue to sell Bandit's Scalps to the bartender at Feldepost's Inn for 25gp each.
>Identifies aren't a flat 100gp each, some places do it for cheaper. The cheapest (as I recall) is the armor vendor at the Nashkel Carnival, who will identify any item for 50gp.

How exactly do I learn to kite?
I get the idea, but I mean, I'll be walking along and the map is pitch black (if unexplored) or you have a field of view that's smaller than the screen, so I just walk into enemies/as soon as an enemy appears on the screen within my "vision" they start attacking and my entire party has to furiously click the other way. Having one character doing the kiting is the standard method, you can also try to bounce the enemy between two of them.

When it comes to multiple enemies, you turn everyone except the one(s) actually kiting on enemies that are ranged first (especially spellcasters,) then fast stuff you can't properly like wolves. Something like an ogre is pretty ideal to leave until last, because it's neither fast nor ranged.

Casting something like Sleep can give you a lot of time to deal with whatever makes its saving throw, without a whole group of enemies bearing down on you at once.

PSTEE is the most minimal overhaul of their games, and doesn't feature any content written by Beamdog. They just gave Avellone an editing pass over the original text of the game, updated the UI and added the engine improvements from the other EE games (zoom, scaled UI, toggled highlighting of interactables, etc.)

The downside is that it doesn't include the Unfinished Business mod and I don't think it's updated to work with the EE version yet.

The IWDEE changes are mostly just porting the game to the new engine (IWD with the expansion is still BG1 rules with BG2 sprites.) So, you can make half-orcs, there are kits, you can dual wield, spells and summons work like they do in BG2 etc. They put in a bunch of the spells that existed in BG2 but not IWD, implemented most of (all?) of IWD Unfinished Business, which is a half dozen quests. The extra spells make arcane casters more powerful, because it includes the various Contingencies and Sequencers.

In terms of content they actually created themselves, it's just BGEE kits, plus two new cleric ones (priests of Tyr and Tempus.) The BGEE kits are pretty good IMO, they're mostly flavourful and sit above the base classes but below the very best kits in terms of power. I think there are also some items they made so you don't get fucked picking katana proficiency since none exist in the original game.

The overall effect is to make the game moderately easier if you take advantage of the new stuff, and maybe slightly harder if you don't? The part that's harder is mostly around certain spells being weaker, like no animate dead making you an army of skeletons even at low levels, as well as the weaker BG2 weapon proficiencies (more of an issue in IWDEE than BGEE because of the loot being heavily randomized, so you might end up waiting ages to get a useful item of a specific weapon type.) Though that's compensated to an extent if you utilize weapon styles.

You're better off just googling about BGEE stuff since that's far more discussed. The new characters are a mixed bag in terms of their concept and writing, and in the first game there's a disconnect between them and the original characters, since the new ones have content in the vein of the more involved BG2 NPCs, whereas everyone else is almost entirely mute.
