So I just beat the water temple on Oot and in my opinion, the fire temple is much worse. Why does water get the hate?

>> No.3948702

I agree. I had a harder time figuring out where to go in the fire temple. The water temple was much more straight-forward.

>> No.3948705

You mean the worst dungeon in OoT , the worst Zelda dungeon in the 3D Zeldas, or the worst Zelda dungeon of all time from any game?

>> No.3948715

>>3948705
From any of the retro games. I generally dislike the fire temple the most. Probably due to the ridiculous timed run you have to do to grab the megaton hammer.

>> No.3948723

The issue people have with the water temple is that it's incredibly tedious having to enter the menu and equip/unequip the iron boots. Also the dungeon item is just a longer hookshot and the boss is pretty shitty. The 3DS version makes the boots act as regular items and the dungeon ends up being far more enjoyable about it. Although since OoT became known as the greatest game of all time and the water temple was the one thing that got the most complaints (aside from Navi), "le water temple is so hard xd" became a meme parroted by people who have never played the game.

Not sure if it strictly counts as a dungeon, but that bit in Majoras Mask when you have to go get all the zora eggs from the pirate ladies

>> No.3948765

>>3948723

>equipping boots

That's not the issue at all. It was having to change the water levels in the right way to get through it. Without a strategy guide you could be stuck for a very long time trying to figure out where you had to go and what the water level needed to be to make progress through there.

>inb4 hurr that was easy for me though

I get it, you're good at finding your way around shit. That was still the real reason why people had a hard time with the water temple, not fucking boot equipping.

Changing the water levels is what made the dungeon challenging but equipping your boots is what made the dungeon tedious. When you combine those two, you get something that's frustrating and that's why people hated the water temple the most.

When you get the map the water temple becomes a joke. You really don't need to switch the levels as often as people are making it out to be. Menu'ing is a pain, particularly on older emulators, but even that isn't too terrible.

I'm sure the number of times you need to switch water levels if you're doing a perfect run isn't very high. But that's kind of irrelevant because it assumes you already know how to do a perfect run. If you don't know anything about it, aren't using a guide, and don't have a naturally good sense of direction, you will end up getting confused and changing water levels a bunch of times trying to get something to work i.e. exactly what happened when I played it for the first time.

Water Temple was annoying. Mostly just a question of "what haven't you messed with in a long time" sort of deal, process of elimination. Keeping a memorable list of everything you couldnt get to is hard, but if you're stumped you can try to remember which rooms you've been to and then realize which areas were once inaccessible or had something you wanted to reach.

But the Fire Temple was much harder. I think most here seem to agree that the timed run to get up to the big chest was a pain. Primarily because of the restricted 8 directions only movement, and that last part of the curve was a tightrope act.

Aside from the water temple and the goron sword this was I believe the equivalent of this game's nintendo hell replay value. Difficulty spikes that make you invest alot of time and effort into getting past some obstacle which seemed at first to be like any other.

And the Fire Temple wasnt exactly without its convoluted 3d movement either. There was some vertical shit that had to be done as well, and those big lava rooms were kinda hard to get through.

The megaton hammer was practically useless for the rest of the game too, it wasnt like the magic hammer in LTP which was actually pretty nice (4 hits worth of damage, and it only had a small lead time before striking - megaton hammer takes forever to heft).

When they designed OOT they paid way too much attention to balancing the items so that they would pretty much only be useful for the puzzles they were designed for. In a variety of other zelda games, many items had their puzzle use, but were often useful for other things depending on tactics.

You got new boots? Great, they're only useful for a niche few things in the game thats it, add them to the pile of boots you're collecting.

But in LTP the boots were great for attacks and getting around quick. And in Minish the cape had attack moves.

> and OOT has no Swordbeam, if you want to engage enemies at a distance you need to use items

I actually like the temple a lot. Especially since the 3DS version streamlined it a bit. Fun, but still requires a good since of three-dimensional thinking. Normally I would agree with you except in the 3DS remake they nerfed some of the glitches/exploits that allowed the Water Temple to actually be completed first out of the 5 temples. Mainly the jump to the 3rd water switch from the center platform was removed, now requiring more keys than possible to acquire without the bow.

>> No.3954913

Main reason I disliked the Water Temple is because of the constant switching of boots, other than that I actually really love it. It's definitely a giant puzzle. The 3DS version is top tier for removing the boot situation.

Fire Temple is definitely shittier in almost every aspect. It just hurts to look at sometimes, idk.

The water temple breaks the "flow" of the game, in others temples most of the puzzles can be solved by the items you have equipped, but in the water temple the fact that you have to switch boots like a million times and fuck around with the water level, makes not hard but tedious as sin.
