I recently beat Echo Night and Echo Night 2.
I consider both among the best PSX games I've ever played and I'm itching for more like it. What would /vr/ recommend I play?

Also, Echo Night general, I really can't get enough of the games.

You should check The Note.
Also ...Iru! if you moonspeak.

I love those first person PS1 graphics.

and of course not retro: Echo Night Beyond, the best in the series.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't read/speak Moon so I'm pretty limited, I know. It's only thanks to the fan translation of EN2 that I could play it.
I'm breathlessly awaiting the fan translation of Mizzurna Falls. Holy SHIT.

I've heard The Note was a hot piece of shit, but I'm willing to check it out.
The first couple Clock Tower games are two of my all time favorite, and because of that I'd pay money to have a Twilight Syndrome translation. But I'm not getting my hopes up. I'd fucking pay to be able to play The Witch of Salzburg as well.

EN/EN2 reminded me of another dear and favorite game, CastleVania 64. The graphics were so similar, particularly EN.

Hey now I've always been sucker for a PS1 survival horror thread too. I'm the Anon always hyping up Devil Man. First person ones give me the weirds though.

OP might want to check out some of the early vast, creepy PC games like Ultima Underworld and Daggerfall if he hasn't already. Michigan on PS2 is an interesting take but not retro. On PS1 I could add Hellnight and Deception 1 & 2 to the mix. Hellnight is particularly horrifying with that "hunted" mechanic NESfag loves so much in RE3 I'm surprised he didn't toss that one right out there. Uru! IS better and you can play it without much moon knowledge. Oh Shit! I almost forgot White Day. Check that one out too.

>Uru! IS better and you can play it without much moon knowledge.

Do you mean ...Iru! ?
I played it with no moonspeak knowledge, and I can vouch that it's not a good idea. In fact, there is only ONE puzzle in the entire game that's hard if you don't understand Japanese, the one with the 2nd monster guarding the path and the sheets of paper (incantations I believe) you have to use in a precise order. I figured it out after countless hours of wandering around and mindless trial&error.

But honestly the main issue is that the game is story oriented and text heavy. You're missing half the game if you don't understand a word. Thankfully a friend of mine translated the game, on paper, based on a video playthrough of mine. Sadly the translation was lost, it only translated what was shown in that particular playthrough anyway, so only one ending.

Yeah, I can't imagine playing through this sort of game w/o understanding the story whatsoever.

I'll try Hellnight. Unfortunately, I spoiled Deception for myself but I've never actually played it.
When I can find Echo Night 3 for a reasonable price I plan to check it out, too. I prefer being able to emulate shit, due to cost.
White Day is something I need to check out, thanks for the reminder.

Yeah I didn't proof read my post. I just had my wisdom teeth out so I'm going to be loopy for a few days.It just follows survival horror conventions though. Fetch B to A, don't die on the way etc. Sometimes I think the games are a little less scary when you have little to no understanding of the text. Iirc the spoken text in that game isn't even English right?

Maybe OP might like some of the creepy first person roguelike-likes like Baroque?

I just d/l White Day from NicoBlog. Not sure if it's the original or the remake. I'm looking forward to it.

Anybody else got a boner for the translation of Mizzurna Falls?

I'm pretty eager yes. I played enough of it to know it's good but I couldn't get through it by trial and error and I knew a walkthrough would spoil it.

I think you'll enjoy it if you're looking for retro feeling first person survival horror. It sucks that it's not technically retro just because it's on PC. I mean it came out the same year as Alone in the Dark: New Nightmare and Mega Man X6. Feels legit to me.

And while we're on the topic...

A word of warning for Hellnight anon. There are two specific puzzles that you can screw up that will make the game unfinishable.

One involves a pair of broken headphones.
The other involves a CD you can miss that gets used much later in the game.

Double check a faq!!!!

What is this and is it Japan only?

Holy shit that's retarded. Thank you for the heads up, what kind of rage did this cause in the gaming community when the game was new?

Whoops didn't double check my cover image!

But anyway yeah they're like the video game application of The Ring's formula that nicely pushes the fourth wall and meta too. Your character in the "real world" has a device very much like a DS that everyone uses like smartphones and then you get involved with cursed retro-style games that run on it and you get creepy messages and stuff on an interface that's very similar to the DS's actual menu plus in addition to the 3D sound it also makes novel use of the dual screens as you hold it book-style and control using the touch screen but ghosts can only be seen on the other screen kind of simulating peripheral vision (and borrowing from Fatal Frame).

Not retro, but very retro themed and a nice fresh feeling first person horror experience. There's a lot of first person adventure type horror games on DS that feel pretty retro. I wonder how long it'll be before games start appearing where you strap your Switch to your face.
