Previous thread >>3901468

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Is it possible to connect either a GTX 1070 or R9 270x to a CRT by converting DVI-D to VGA, then getting one of those $50 boxes off Amazon or eBay to convert VGA to Component, and have my PC output 320x240@60hz to said CRT without it catastrophically fucking up?

There isn't any obvious reason you couldn't. DVI-D output to active DVI->VGA converter, active VGA to component converter. passive cable adapters will not work unless you use a DVI-A output, which your cards might not support

I've got a B&O Beovision 8902 at my parents' place.

Non-Sony CRTs in my immediate possession include an Amstrad CTM-644, IBM P260 (admittedly this is a rebadged Trinitron) JVC VM-R150E-K and Viewsonic G90f.

Sony-wise I have 2x BVM-20F1E, 1x BVM-20G1E, 1x BVM-20G1A, PVM-2950QM and a KX-27PS1 Profeel.

I should really look to thinning out my collection.

Get any trinitron that has a component output and then just get a switch that you can run all your 6th gen component cables into. It's pretty tough/impossible to find a set with more than 1 component input so the switch is your best option.

I would say avoid professional monitors entirely unless you can get a hold of a multiformat set. If it's not multiformat then just go the consumer route and get a nice 27+ inch tv. The picture will be spectacular and if one day you ever happen across a multiformat monitor scoop it up and enjoy your 480p.

If you have a few numbers regarding the dot pitch of the tube and size, you can math out a theoretical TVL, but it is also dependent on how precisely the gun can focus in on a point of the screen.

There are test images out there for testing and finding said number, but it's not going to be 100% accurate; Also not as straight forward with TVs, since you can't as easily throw a full-screened pdf file up on them.

31khz vga monitors are pretty clean cut, rgb, no 480i/240p natively, rgbhv, limiting in a sense but the quality is great.

Aperture grille pc monitors are pretty common, sony made them and the trinitron tech was licensed to a few manufacturers and they usually used the -tron suffix.

I think they are great and handle a lot of arbitrary resolutions but you do need to do some work arounds when sending a consoles 15khz signal to them.

If you degauss it a few times when power cycling (on/off two times a day) and it doesn't go away, it's probably not going to be fixed with a degaussing coil. It's a purity issue. This means the set has been rotated from where it was, and the Earth's magnetic field is different around it. That sort of thing can kinda get locked in if you rotate a set while it's on, or tate it and turn it on straight away, rather than leaving it a day or two. East/west/pitch/tate can all have this effect. It can be a pain setting up an arcade monitor on your bench, then putting it into a cab where it's laying back a bit and watching the purity go to shit.

The proper fix is to re-do the purity. This is the first step in the convergence process - you loosen the yoke and... see this video, that's easier than me typing it out - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gmrrf5hiYQI

A ghetto fix is to use a magnet or two on top of the set. Use the weakest magnet you can, that still does the job. Fridge magnets first. Most electronics stores (radio shack is dead, but Jaycar, if you're in Aus) will sell rare earth magnets, if you need more oomph. I got some from Officeworks. Remember to turn the magnets over and stuff, to find the best position. And to use something like 240p test suite so you can get a white mage up, and also the grid because the magnets might move the convergence just slightly - which is normally manageable.

Also never bought one online where I've seen them sell for $200 plus, so I really don't know what they're worth on the open market; All of mine were either free, from people desperate to rid themselves of it or simply bought when they weren't hugely sought after by retro gamers.

That said, if properly packaged, a CRT can safely make the journey, even with UPS. That's how my Ikegami ended up getting here.

Convex can still have geometry issues, and they typically don't have as many options to fix them in the service menu either. Which will leave you in the same situation you're in currently.

I have a nice one that I saved from being trashed at a university I used to work at, but it's specs I remember are

>1900x1440 @ 72hz
>1600x1200 @ 85hz
>1024x768 @ 100hz

I currently haven't been able to play anything on it since my desk is actually too weak to support it at the moment (lel I know) but I have a dilemma: my current GPU is a 980ti which has DVI-I output (and comes with a vga adapter in the box) but I'm afraid about wanting to upgrade to a new GPU because analog output is dead

bottom line is I want to know how you guys have faired with Displayport-VGA adapters for gaming. Almost everyone I see seems to say they only support up to 1920x1200 @ 60hz and that kind of pisses me off. I don't want to have to be locked to a 980ti fucking forever because I'll lose high quality analog output. Can anybody here confirm they use high refresh rates and decent resolutions from a Displayport adapter?

How is that possible?

Isn't LD audio just Redbook (same as CD)?

Are you saying that DVD has compressed audio and that Bluray has enough space for uncompressed audio?

How much radius does the the audio take on LDs compared to the video?
Are the audio tracks on the center of the disc or on the edge?

My understanding is that for video quality:

VHS=shit
VCD=shit like VHS but with digital dirt on the screen instead of analog dirt, also can have several subtitle tracks unlike VHS
Betamax=1.5x as good as VHS
LD=2x as good as VHS
DVD=4x as good as VHS
BD=??x as good as VHS

But I don't know how that list goes for audio quality.

Do B&W VHS have better picture quality than color tapes because such video requires less bandwidth?

Do B&W VCD have better picture quality than color discs because such video requires less bandwidth?

>> No.3934746

>>3934714
Yeah, exactly. LDs have straight-up, uncompressed Redbook CD audio which is way higher quality than the heavily compressed, lossy audio that a DVD uses. Video quality is technically better on a DVD over an LD, but audio is far inferior. BDs have uncompressed hi-res audio, which, finally, is even better than Redbook.

As far as video goes, LDs have analog video, so while DVDs have a higher theoretical TVL resolution, they still suffer from MPEG artifacts during high motion scenes, etc. LDs have their own issues (Laser Rot is a bitch), but since it's analog video, some purists will argue that the picture is more 'film like' than digital video can provide. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Based on the digital vs. analog argument, it's hard to really draw direct, accurate comparisons between formats like you're doing, but you're roughly accurate. Sorry for the reddit spacing, I don't usually type this much and wanted it to be readable.

This discussion is now getting way off topic but I will say that VHS Hi-Fi and the Betamax equivalent were renowned for being truly excellent audio formats back in the 80's and 90's - rivalling DAT for professional usage.

If you wanted digital tape then, you could do a LOT worse than pick up a digital processor/encoder from Sony or Matsushita. I have pic related, bought from an auction of Alan Wilder's excess inventory (Depeche Mode, Recoil and successful producer in his own right).

How does DVD audio quality compare to that of VHS tapes (HiFi stereo, not the early Linear mono)?

I have heard that some garage bands and other artists short on cash used VHS tapes to record their master version of their songs.

What if I use this to record live game music?
Will a cheap VCR record better audio quality than a good quality tape deck?
Does it matter what quality of tape I use?
Will it sound better than Youtube?

wew, lots to unpack here; I'll do my best:

>How does DVD audio quality compare to that of VHS tapes (HiFi stereo, not the early Linear mono)
You can't directly compare analog and digital audio, it really needs to be heard. A clean, new tape on a clean new deck would arguably sound better than a lossy DVD audio track. Very subjective.

>I have heard that some garage bands and other artists short on cash used VHS tapes to record their master version of their songs.
My band did this as late as 2014, it was a very common practice, and is still done.

>What if I use this to record live game music?
I'm not sure I understand this question.

>Will a cheap VCR record better audio quality than a good quality tape deck?
This ties in to my answer above and the answer is no. A regular VCR does NOT use the whole tape for audio, it uses a tiny portion of it and the rest for your non-existent video track. On top of that, most VCRs compress the SHIT out of whatever you pipe into them for recording, like it's a very, very severe compressor. Some VHS decks have special audio recording modes for using the whole tape, though it was way more common (at the consumer level) on Betamax decks.

>Does it matter what quality of tape I use?
If you are going to do it, you need to use good quality tapes on SP mode, or whatever the shortest recording time is. Longer modes equals slower tape, which equals poorer sound. Longer tapes means thinner, poorer quality tapes.

>Will it sound better than Youtube?
Again, way too many variables. Will a 1080p YouTube video have better sound than a random Goodwill VHS tape? Probably. Will a 240p YouTube video? No.

So my extron came in along with the RCA cables I ordered. I know I'm going to have to strip the tips of the cables and feed them into the phoenix 5 pin connectors but I'm not sure what else.

I get that the second slot is for left audio and the fourth is for right but could anyone help me out with what the tip ring and sleeve are? I tried looking up the words in relation to wiring but got some stuff that seemed irrelevant to what I want to do.

Want to insulate yourself against electric shock?
Follow these steps:

1) Dont ground yourself. Wear rubber-soled boots and consider using a non-conductive floor mat (like a neoprene foam mat).
2) Use rubber or plastic tools to touch suspected High Voltage components and move things out of your way
3) Keep your non-working hand in your damn pocket to prevent yourself from grabbing anything, and try to prevent your body from touching anything that has a path to ground.

A CRT TV is unlikely to outright kill you unless it's huge (like 42+ inches might do it), you have a heart problem, or you leave it plugged in. You WILL get a shock, and it will be painful, and you might get knocked back, but it's unlikely to kill you.

Stun guns usually deliver more voltage, and they pulse it several times a second.

The toughest thing was remembering to slide the heatshrink on BEFORE connecting everything. That's totally optional though so don't sweat it if you don't have / can't get any.

Pretty sure you've got the TRS to slot configurations right. I just used a multimeter to trace continuity between the different sections of the connector to the bare wires but again this is just because I had the tool to hand.

What the fuck are you going on about? Digital audio on LD is practically identical to CD Audio, and DVD audio tracks are more or less within the capability of CD-A. LD is certainly a step up from VHS, but you have to be ignorant to claim it's objectively better than DVD

>> No.3935568

>>3935550
It's not 'practically identical' it is literally CD audio on an LD. DVD audio on the vast majority of commercial video releases is compressed, low bit-rate junk. It's not ignorance, LD audio is actually, objectively better from a pure 'audio quality' standpoint. There's no two ways around it. DVDs have some advantages like digital surround, which LDs do not have, but the stereo audio quality is, simply, better.

>> No.3935583

>>3935568
I stand corrected, NTSC LDs actually have marginally better than CD quality sound, PAL LDs have CD quality. Laserdiscs can support AC-3 audio for digital surround but it was late in the formats life. You've admitted it yourself that DVD is just as capable with audio as CD or LD in the form of LPCM. How are they not functionally equivalent in that respect? Just because AC-3 is available doesn't make DVD a lesser format, and you've presented no evidence that these forms of lossy compression are audibly worse anyway, bad masters or otherwise. LD was no more immune to bad sound mastering than any other format. On the same grounds, you might as well accuse LD of being an inferior format because it had the option of analog audio. I've heard bad things about the Instavision tubes in terms of reliability. That said if it's still ticking they must have replaced it back in the day or it was a good 'un straight from the factory. Not had much luck turning up a pinout for that DIN connector or a service manual in general.

I'm having a weird problem with hooking up my PAL Wii to my sony PVM over RGB.

Anyway when I plug it in the video comes out like pic related.
In the thread that image came from (i can't take my own right now so i just google searched for something) that guy said he found out the problem came from the RGB connections soldered incorrectly inside his cable. I don't know anything about soldering, but shouldn't swapping around the RGB inputs on my monitor do the same? I tried this a bunch but no dice. I got a whole bunch of other trippy colour set-ups but couldn't get the colours to be normal.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I also heard some people on the net saying they had a similar problem with differences in NTSC and PAL mode... but mine is a PAL system, running on a PAL monitor. I also get no difference by launching PAL or NTSC ROMs.
Btw, my PS2 runs fine on this... so it's not the monitor.

Must be. If the component cable works on another set, the PS2 is not stuck in RGB-display mode, and the connector is seated correctly, then the issue is likely the tv or its jacks.

If you have a Wii or Xbox with component cables try connecting those to the tv and see if they display like the ps2.

Projectors are fucking terrible.

They're like rear-projection. You need perfect viewing conditions for it to look good, and when it's good it's barely better than a normal. Then you have way harsher maintenance costs since bulbs are fucking expensive.

Don't even consider a projector.

CRT projector dude. Needs to be dark, and yeah setup and maintenance is a pain, but a good CRT projector looks better than pretty much anything on the market today. Extron still offers the manuals for pretty much all of their products up front and available to anyone who feels like looking up a model on their website.

Personally just picked up a Crosspoint 300 HVA, and it'll take pretty much anything you could want: RGBHV, RGBS, RGsB, YPbPr, Y/C, or CVid. S-Video would need a somewhat specialized adapter to connect to two separate BNCs, but it wouldn't be that difficult to put together.

Do you even have a specific model you're looking at?

Basically >>3942834 and additionally: CRT projectors don't tolerate ambient light very well. Modern compact projectors can put out much more light, and that's great for slideshows and other presentations. CRTs have a much higher contrast ratio, however, it amounts to fuck-all in a room that isn't reasonably dark. Tube lifetime is something of a complicated topic. If they're configured properly and you use the set for many years, it can work out cheaper than buying DLP/LCD projectors and their respective bulbs over the same time frame. A substantial commitment in other ways, though.

I have a modchipped PS1 and while playing CAPCOM's JJBA fighting game a decent portion of the game screen appears below the screen's bottom border. Generally, the bigger the set, the better the speakers will probably be. Maybe look for a Mitsubishi console TV. They're pretty hard to find, but they seem to hit the right marks.

Mine's from 1988 and does have S-Video. Big stereo speakers on each side, the size of the grills are a little misleading (the actual speaker only fills about the middle 1/3rd of each pillar) but they do sound great, at least IMO.

Mitsubishi also made models like this except the speakers were on the bottom, sometimes with a little glass door like an entertainment center. I believe those are a bit more common.

Those are Horizontal and Vertical Sync, and would actually be the least likely to support anything like that because they don't just buffer the inputs, they also condition and restore the sync being fed in .

You'd want to keep audio to the inputs specifically labeled for audio.

That said, if you're looking for 8+ in and 6+ out, you'd want something labeled 128 HVA or higher. 128 is the number of inputs and outputs, being 12 and 8, and HVA notes that it supports audio routing as well. Make sure you actually check the photos for the auction(s) in question as you'll see tons labeled 128 HVA not having actually having that number of inputs/outputs or not running audio.

If you wanted to go even higher, you can get pretty silly with inputs and outputs; Extron made 12, 16, and 32ct varieties, so if you just want to go absolutely moronic, there's shit like the 3232 for 32 in and 32 out.

DVD-Videos sometimes have LPCM audio.

I have two Taylor Swift concert DVDs and they have LPCM 2.0 in addition to Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 is also available in Journey to Fearless.

Also, the US DVD (Bandai and Discotek version) of 5 Centimeters Per Second is in LPCM 2.0 for both the Japanese and English versions in addition to a Dolby Digital 4.0 track for the Japanese version, the English dub included is the Bandai version, the ADV release only includes Dolby Digital 2.0 audio for the Japanese version and Dolby Digital 5.1 for the English dub.

I have both releases of 5 Centimeters Per Second, in addition to the Japanese Limited Edition DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray as well as the Hong Kong Deluxe Edition Blu-ray and the US Blu-ray.

Another example is the first release of the Japanese DVD of The Voices of a Distant Star.
The later budget release and most international releases no longer has LPCM audio and is only Dolby Digital but has an English dub and Korean dub to compensate.

Also, DVD Dolby Digital and DTS is superior to LaserDisc Dolby Digital and DTS, but the mixes are sometimes different between the two so you sometimes can't really compare.

I have an Onkyo 6.1 surround system to go with my D32E1WU BVM on my game room and it sounds and looks amazing, even for VHS tapes.

So this is not technically retro, but no where else will have the knowledge to answer this.

I'm looking to play my new consoles (360, PS3, PS4) on my VGA CRTs. My FW900 has BNC input but my Dell P990 only has VGA. I also want to play Wii, PS2 and XBOX on these monitors at 480p. Problem is, they support 31Khz minimum, meaning if any game doesn't like progressive scan I'm all out of luck.

So my question is: What's the best way to hook all these up? I've been thinking component to VGA is the best solution. Does anyone know of any good converters at an affordable price? Are there any with a de-interlacer built in that I can switch on to get 480i only games working? And on a side note, are there any good component selector switches?

Thanks for the help. I figure this option will look even better than a BVM due to the higher TVL of VGA monitors but will be a lot cheaper.

Try rotating it in a different orientation and see if the earths magnetic field changes it. Turn it off a few times to see if it will degauss. If that doesn't clear it up, a manual deguasser might work.

Tube wear is pretty much a myth, especially for non-critical applications like playing fucking video games. I have two BVMs in front of me, one with 4k hours and the other with 90k - both on the original tubes. Following simple calibration you would be hard pressed to tell one from the other.

The thing to worry about would be transformers, coils and electrolytic capacitors. These will degrade far faster than the tube itself, assuming you don't have contrast yanked up to 11 which is bad practice in any case.

I want to go further into the service menu and reduce the red amplification as consumer CRTVs always had too much red push to attact normies in the TV store showroom.

However I recall from the Crash Bandicoot documentary video the developers said they accounted for this color imbalance when they designed their games.

It's gonna depend on the game and you'll probably drive yourself crazy trying to find the best fit or constantly messing with it for a different game.

There is a similar issue with GBA games where some devs increased contrast to account for the unlit GBA screens. Some devs stopped doing this when the SPs came out and some didn't. It's why some games like Harmony of Dissonance look garrish when played on an SP/DS/emulator.

Thanks

I don't have anything magnetic near it but I'll try tilting it.

My uncle is giving me his old 60 lcd but I love this old crt for games.

Looks like you lost the green gun. When something that should be green shows up on the screen, is it mostly black?

I finally got the remote control for my trinitron with the help of one fellow anon who was nice enough to tell me which was the original remote for my model. I've got rid of the scart icon that was stuck on the screen.

Now, what do these icons mean, and what do they do? (I know it's about the picture)

Probably because you're in the movie preset mode shown in your second pic.

The first option will be fully tweakable.

In case some people don't know, its possible to output 240p to a VGA CRT monitor with most graphics cards, including the GTX 10 series.

If you don't have an analog port, use this https://www.amazon.com/Rankie-Plated-DisplayPort-Adapter-Converter/dp/B00Z08TZNU/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1493002521&sr=1-3&keywords=displayport+to+vga

in response to all those who claim shipping can't be done.

>Top left
two layers of large bubble wrap(side note, I prefer small bubble wrap but didn't have any)
>Top right
tightly box the monitor with front and back extra layered under cardboard
>Bottom
Lay a foundation of a few styrofoam boards, carefully lower smaller box into 24x24x24 box. Add a layer of air pillows to the front and rear of the monitor, fill the rest of the box with packing peanuts filling ever single crevice.
Your monitor is now ready to be shipped.

That's why they introduce light colored halos around dark objects.

Really? I called up a local TV repair place and asked some similar questions about CRT maintenance, and he treated tube wear like a legitimate issue. I've seen two sides of that coin on other forums, but you guys here seem to know your stuff so I'll take your word for it. I'll keep the transformers, coils, and capacitors in mind though

Thanks for the help, you guys!
