Hey /Vr,

Me and my wife were playing Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest on our Retron™ 5 the other day and she said it reminded her of games like Shovel Knight and UNDERTALE. She explained how graphics and gameplay were similar and we tried to define what retro is. For her it's style, for me it's age. I think the board should define retro once and for all in a non arbritary manner.

So now that the dust has settled, if we're going by age we should consider six gen retro. Dreamcast is already allowed so we should do the same for GBA and PS2. I mean it's all or nothing, some people would feel the PSX is not retro because it brought cutscenes to gaming, PS2 is no different, it's old enough and its games have already aged, otherwise they wouldn't remake them for modern consoles.

If we're going by style, then we should be able to talk about games like UNDERTALE here, because it's retro styled. I mean look at it on that CRT, it's how me and my wife play it. What do you think?

I just bought Earthbound for SNES and I love it! I got it cheap, only $200 on Craigslist (OMG), because it was a 'reproduction'. The guy that sold it to me said it's rare so I wouldn't be able to find any original copies and it's hard to get the rare innards that make it.

Actual RetroFPS formula is more akin to Metroid-like exploration - you enter a level and have one area available to you, then through keys and switches new areas become available to you, they are often interconnected and sometimes located withing already completed areas that become repopulated with new things (Doom, Quake, Duke 3D almost never locked you in, and almost always followed the above formula).

I find this one interesting.

"PSX" was the designation of the system in the US before the system's proper launch. A number of gaming mags and related media would adopt this acronym when covering it.

When it did launch, it dropped the X and was just PlayStation, but because the mags that'd been writing about it got used to abbreviating it as PSX, it kind of stuck. Websites would later adopt this acronym as well.

The PSX is ALSO confusingly the name of a DVR-capable PS2 released in Japan.

Now, considering this is a retro board, and the "PSX" acronym is rather archaic itself, then why do people still bitch about it on here? Is it to separate the oldfags from the newfags? To ID the amerifags? To ID the hipster twats that think they know everything?

That's kind of a bad example of a game aging though, since it was already a little bit bad.

A better example is something like Pole Position that was impressive when it came out, but that when compared to racers that would be made later it, it doesn't hold up well. To the point that after only a handful of years there really isn't a reason to play Pole Position except out of curiosity for the roots of the genre or nostalgia.

Compared to something like Tetris where not only is the original version still one of the best, but it's still one of the better block falling puzzlers and there is just as much reason to play it now as the day it was released.
