Also I'm not so sure about being unable to lose, things got a bit bad in a battle where Sue was surrounded by 4 slimes and almost died, which leads me into another question, can I control my character positioning at all, or more specifically, can I make them run away from enemies if they're surrounded/low on HP?

I've ranted too many times here about how disappointing I found this game, being billed as all about the joy of exploration and then having dungeons that were boring as fuck to actually explore. I also hated the characters and think the voice acting is some of the worst of all time.

But it does have a pretty neat and fun battle system which gives it big points. Also I was starting to burn out on the genre already then and it takes a lot for an RPG to win me over now. I'm just glad someone liked it.

>Actually, games "aging" is a metaphor for the irreversible shift of perception associated with the arrival of new game mechanics, and the difficulty of adapting to the context of old ones. Once you've experienced, say, the smoothness of post-2000s computer FPS controls, it's difficult to adjust to the controls of 5th gen FPS given their experimental nature.

Perceptions of standard mechanics obviously change with the contemporary trends in the medium. Your insistence to interpret this in a completely literal way is either trolling or lacking mental capacity.

Shit argument, humans actually age, turn old and die over time, video games don't and they are identical as they were released and will never change, sure you may now get frustrated because older games were more challenging and new are a cake walk but that doesn't mean they "aged" and are terrible, it just means you are a terrible player.

>> No.3944003

Disagree. A game can be revolutionary when it comes out and be one of the best games at that time. But when somebody that hasn't played it previously were to play it today, the game could very well not hold up because the revolutionary things about it might have become standard or were improved in other games.
I don't think that really applies to JRPGs since gameplay tends to stay relatively similar over the years, but it's definitely real when you go back and play older FPS especially.

See that's where I disagree. Because at the time it was good. But part of what made it good was that we had little else to compare it to. So in the early 80's it was amazing, but by even the early 90's it couldn't compete with something like Ridge Racer.

To say it was never a good game is disingenuous, but to say that it's as good a racing game as those would come later is just plain untrue.

So I guess you can say that if it was "good for it's time" that it never actually was, but I disagree. It was and still is, but it's also very clearly a very early video game and clearly a product of it's day.

Console RPGs have gotten worse with time, I've yet to enjoy any post-/vr/ rpg as much as Dragon Quest 3. They almost always make battles completely trivial, get way to bogged down in dialogue and take way too fucking long to beat. The basic mechanics have turned into tedious obstacles to slog through before reaching the next story beat, instead of cornerstones of game design.

Look at the history of pre-colonial North America. Relatively very few people populating a continent with vast natural resources and who were very skilled at agriculture. As well a very little "market" and concept of private ownership.

Yet the various tribes were all constantly at war with one another with times of widespread peace being brief and uncommon. This is true of everywhere of course, but that example exemplifies it.

Look, I love Gears, but I couldn't really call it "great" by any means. Blade is the only actually remarkable and not "deeply flawed yet enjoyable" game in the series, and even it is rather entry-level.

And? This was in the context of a technologically primitive society lacking the material means to provide for its members.
I think you're missing the point if you think people who critique capitalist social relations do it out of some historical romanticism. On the contrary, liberal capitalism has been extremely productive, and its wealth goes hand-in-hand with wrecking every form of traditional life and belief system. The point is, once you achieve the material means to provide a decent life for everyone, those relations themselves become obstacles. Production-for-use will make the most sense in the near-future, unless you want to destroy the environment as well in your obstinacy to perceive the current social structure as eternal and unchanging. Casual crossboarder here, it's one of my favorite games. It's not without flaws however:
The combat system is great, but it's very exploitable. Any kind of grinding breaks the game and you will have stomp over everything without them even hitting you.
The story is so-so, I'm a huge fan of Part1 because of the adventures, but Part2 got a little too serious at times.
The dub is atrocious. I hate dubs, I hate them in all medium, but this is one is especially bad.
The camera goes retarded at times, but it's a minor complaint.
Even then, I love it. Really fond of it and hoping it gets some love in the future.

Not related, but I'm glad I played this instead of FF7 back then, FF7 is such a bad game, holy shit. I still don't understand the fandom. I want to fuck half the cast, but that doesn't mean it's good.
