I hate how the Playstation era is being forgotten and denigrated. Whenever there's an HD compilation made, they ALWAYS skip the Playstation games. Supposedly, the idea is that the 3D is too primitive to work. This creates problems for series like Silent Hill or Metal Gear Solid, where the first game in the series plot, plays a large role in the later sequels.

PGXP is proving that, you know what, these games DO look pretty good in HD. A lot of the problems are caused by texture distortions and other errors. Yeah, they're not Dreamcast or PS2 games. But they look fine.

>> No.3923868

They're just lazy hacks making a quick buck. They're not interested in reverse engineering 20 year old Playstation games.

Because their paymasters decided it wasn't worth it. SH HD was a total shitshow, so it's no big loss. But MGS HD was great. But it lacked MGS.

PS games can look absolutely great in motion.
Even back during its heyday, still shots of games showed their jaggies off prominently. You have to see those games in motion to really appreciate them.

The problem is a lack of succesful franchises that remain popular to this day.

Also lacked the two superior games in the series.

But really, PS games look awful upscaled. Whereas a 2D NES/SNES game look ok-ish at higher resolutions because of how simple they are, 2D PS stuff like FF backgrounds look like straight dogshit upscaled. And the 3D stuff doesn't benefit at all either unless they were textured well, and most games' models were not.

Just use software rendering which is how they're supposed to look like when playing them off your console. >>3924201 is right. They look fine. It's when you try to upscale everything that things begin to look messy especially because many, many PS1 games blended pre-rendered environments with 3D models. When the whole thing is 3D, upscaling looks fine. When it's a mix, it all looks like a mess. Just take the console for what it is and play it with software rendering.

In regards to OP, while I disagree with PGXP being a panacea for all games (good luck making stuff like Chrono Cross towns that use background stills as character sprites look cohesive) I also think it's stupid that PS1 is suddenly "too old" to be included in collections. We do have PSN, but still. The issue here however is that nowadays people NEED HD and with PS1 that's always gonna look off. Even the OP pic looks off to me. It takes effort to truly make it look cohesive and, well, Konami. Unless it's a pachinko they're not gonna give a fuck.

What they meant was that Playstation games lack true 3D qualities. It's why they get jittery and distorted in HD. PGXP greatly fixes much of these issues.

not only is mgs3 missing snake vs ape it is also missing boss rush as well as the nightmare minigame. you cannot get the monkey mask and i think you cant get the banana camo either but i forget. lip syncing is off. some ai fuck ups like dogs who upon being headshot now have a chance to lay down and die then instantly spring up and run around in a circle alerting guards. missing several post processing effects including the petals in the boss fight. the fight with the boss is limited to og snake eater camera and the third person one is for some reason not available. widescreen cutscenes reveal things not meant to be seen. bluepoint put their fucking splash logo into the classic snake eater intro at the beginning. this throws the entire video off by a few seconds causing the song and the scenes to not sync up right. including an awkward silence at the end. eva's textures have incorrect seams in the neck

mgs2 is missing not as much but still suffers from many missing effects such as the lice on big shell and the ropes that the gru soldiers slide down from in the opening. no skateboarding either. grenades have an explosion delay causing them to blow up a few seconds late. which can fuck up the ray fight quite a bit since before you had just enough time to shoot in between spamming grenades and now you wont there will always be a break point in between chaff effects if you intend to take advantage of the opening.

some strange hd textures in both as well featuring previously unreadable text just saying shit like "metal gear solid 2 guns of patriots" as if bluepoint doesnt even know what the fuck game they are making. there are many textures throughout that just say metal gear solid or weird other gibberish shit. read the floor panels in the hd version of mgs2 in the dock area of big shell or the flour bags for a laugh. other easy to spot ones include the text on naked snakes gasmask during the halo jump reading iirc "metal gear solid 3"

whats even weirder is that the hd collection got one patch after all this was known. the patch fixed none of it. the patch only removed the option to go back to the game select menu from peace walker.

to be fair the 360 ver fairs a bit better with the post processing effects and stuff like the licensing and mini games using other engines missing is understandable. Other missing features like the cinema and boss rush is puzzling though.
I only tried playing subsistence on an emulator after beating the hd ver and I was surprised how they keep the snake eater intro hidden until the snake eater mission actually begins, I really like that, shame how the hd ver doesn't bother.
I honestly think the MGS remasters are still good due to the improved frame rate and ratio, they are prob some of the best remasters around considering how much of a shitshow most lazy remasters are.

MGS HD ports are the literal golden standards to which everythings else is and should be compared to. I'm an old-ass MG fan myself, who started with the shitty NES port of MG1 back in the days, and I really don't miss the minigame stuff at all in the HD collections. The implied "changes" in visuals are also quite nitpicky.

They especially shine in comparison to the god-awful SH "HD" "Collection", which is no joke THE blunder of the century.

>> No.3929293

>>3929238

SHHD is definitely the brown standard but there's loads of shitty ones, Ratchet & Clank Trilogy and Sly Cooper Trilogy both dropped the fucking ball. PS2 is pretty complex hardware and if PCSX2 taught us anything it's that it takes some time to get all its little eccentricities right.

Ps1 appreciation thread? What have you guys played recently?

Just beat BoFIV a few days ago, think it may be one of my now all time favorites. Not a huge jrpg fan but the battle system, art, and story were incredibly appealing to me. I dropped III as it kind of bored me around halfway but IV was just phenomenal to me.

>>3930024
Mega man legends are the best in my opinion, though even then things like crash and spyro still look great. Honestly the more cartoony looking games aged fine. As far as more gritty stuff I feel mgs1 has aged relatively good, only thing that bugs me is no eyes on the model. I see most cite FF7 for the "ugly early 3d" look of ps1 games but I don't see it. Sure the overworld models are wonky but the in battle sprites are fine and the prerendered backgrounds are beautiful.
