Besides a traumatic brain injury, is there any other legitimate reason to buy a jamma board over a raspberry pi3?

Arcade PCB emulation is spotty as far as I know. For instance, Primal Rage still is not emulated properly.

Just to clear things up if there is misunderstanding:

JAMMA arcade boards (or non-JAMMA arcade boards) are the original hardware. They are the boards used in arcade cabs. They are generally unique to the particular games. Some games share board types and can be converted by burning new EPROMs and swapping them in. Some also use a motherboard with subboard setup. Some use a cartridge-type solution, like the MVS and PGM.

Arcade boards can be a pain. Little things can go wrong that can make the game not run at 100%.

The best solution for new arcade enthusiasts is an MVS motherboard with some MVS carts. The cartridges are easy to store, and the fact that they come in a case make them less susceptible to physical damage. I think there might even be a flashcart solution?

I can't say anything about the raspberry pi because I don't have one. I can say, though, that obviously it'll be emulation so you might not be getting a completely accurate experience.

desu most people won't notice playing an emulator vs. playing an actual arcade. Especially at home with free play enabled.

The older pis usually work better since they had composite out, I'm pretty sure the new ones areHDMI only.

>for-profit
No. It's free. I think you can buy a Pi preconfigured with Recalbox, but there's no point in doing that since you can just download and install it on whatever existing model you have. I sure as hell didn't pay for anything.

>reskin
The interface is a little more useable, the cores are more up-to-date, and the configuration is more sane to manage. Getting things working right out of the box is just a lot easier than with Retropie.

>> No.3914257

>>3912181
I don't know what Jamma Board is, but if you are even remotely comfortable using the command line then retropie is fine for GBA games. You just need to adjust the config file for resolution and screen size and placement, otherwise it stretches over your entire monitor be default.

These people just want to bitch about anything, or forgot that the raspberry pi is supposed to be a learning tool.

>> No.3914476

>>3912602
I can confirm, I have the same setup, if I was to bitch about something on Recalbox, it'd probably be that a couple of the cores like the NES one, the button response is kinda weird or dodgy. But it's hardly noticeable until you play a really good one like the GBA core.

crt, hd, whatever, wii is best cheap emu solution outside of building a low power/small form factor pc yourself.

those smaller sized pocket computers work alright for 90% of emu, but a hacked wii offers (better) n64, gamecube, and wii game support .

You know this isn't /v/, right? No need to sink to low-effort shitposting, ok?

The Wii and the Pi both have their uses and it's not a zero-sum prospect. I use a Pi instead of a Wii because I like how the Pi looks in its little box and I'm not an automaton who makes decisions based solely on metrics and optimization. Some people don't care and get a Wii.

Some people, believe it or not, aren't poor and spending a hundred bucks on a cool little computer to play with for fun doesn't set them to eating ramen for two weeks.

OK in short you need to download the latest firmware in the command line, then go into the config.txt file and comment out anything that has "hdmi" in it, then add the line sdtv_mode=16 (for NTSC). Go buy a camcorder 3.5mm-to-composite cable off Amazon for a few bux, and wala. You'll probably have to adjust the overscan values to fit your CRT, just use trial and error because I have no idea what units the value represents (pixels maybe?)

Good luck my technologically challenged friend

Any PC with PCI-E can take one of these video cards and output perfect video signal to 15/25/30khz monitors.

I have an HP Thinclient with a PCI-E add on board and this card running everything up to Naomi perfectly on a real cabinet.

It also runs old DOS games with real ISA sound because I was able to hack an SB-Link/PC_PCI port into the southbridge (ATI SB600 supports DDMA and Serial IRQ, but no manufacturers ever routed the signals out of the chip)

You can get the HP 5730 with the PCI/PCIe expansion for about $100.

Remove the Sempron CPU and put in a Turion x64 x2 TL-58.

It's smaller than an original xbox.

You mean they use libretro cores. Retroarch is a frontend that ties those cores together, but those cores were developed by other people, not Retroarch's team. Recalbox doesn't use Retroarch, Recalbox is a replacement for Retroarch. Both Recalbox and Retroarch use libretro cores (to which Retroarch is considered the official frontend)

>So I'm not sure there's a difference besides the UI.
Recalbox fixes some issues that Retroarch's team has not and will not address. Recalbox also provides you with a more sane default configuration to work with.
