Turok 2 randomly selects the next map, and requires a host to be a player in the game.
They would need a way to host a server without being a player, player voting for maps, and admin functions.

But I don't think we need to worry about multiplayer being segregated to three games. There are currently no servers up for Turok 2 at all despite just being released. You can't segregate something that's not there.

I didn't have either so I got Turok 1 with 2. Playing it now for the first time.
The game feels odd, as if the gameplay wasn't rebalanced for PC controls. Every enemy is extremely easy to beat, implying that N64 controls made them harder, and there's more ammo than I could ever hope to use, implying that N64 controls made missing more common and ammo more necessary. There have been some platforming sections that were kind of hyped up (a save point before one, even) but they've all been very easy. But what really tops it off is the boss I just fought, in the ancient city. I circle strafed both Jeeps and they just couldn't do anything. They went from max health to none without putting being able to do anything.

I have to say, I'm not really enjoying it. The only time I ever get hit is with hitscan weapons when I get lazy because all the normal enemies are so easy to avoid. The levels are straightforward, not too interesting, although I did like how some secrets were hidden. Overall I don't think it's a bad game but I really don't see it being worthy of the praise it gets. When I played other such classic FPS games such as Doom 1-2, Duke Nukem 3D, and Shadow Warrior, I always got why they were popular, but this one, I'm just not feeling it.

I really don't like this game. I bought it on the N64 basically expecting Goldeneye with monsters but got a horribly clunky wandering collectathon with seemingly random number generator-based combat.

I foolishly kept on playing expecting it to suddenly become good (or at least for me to "get" it).

And that's what happened to a small extent but after about level 3 the boring wandering and shitty combat finally outweighed what good there was.

I still played it, determined to get my money's worth but at the end was still left disappointed.

The frame rate didn't even bother me. I really don't get the love for this game. It's an even poorer Quake 2 clone the way I see it.

The multiplayer was spectacularly bad as well. As in they should have left it out just to spare the devs the embarrassment.

The graphics in Turok 2 are also outstanding, much better than Quake 2's, there's not even a comparison. Preconceptions about N64 vs PC fps games are to blame for the confusion. But one thing that Quake seems to do better is the actual combat. For some reason it just feels somehow a little tighter or better in Quake, that's why Turok's multiplayer never really took off very well. But everything else is perfect.

Shit, that reminds me of another shit thing about Turok 2. Most of the weapons felt really flimsy and unsatisfying to use. The big exception was the Mag 60, which had a lovely squelch when you blew someone's head off.

The rest of them felt like toys.

The "locational damage" was done much better in Goldeneye too. I never saw an appendage literally just vanish in Goldeneye.

As I recall, once I saw a big hole just appear in some monster's chest, despite me not actually shooting it there.

And I'm pretty sure the grenade launcher was entirely random number based. Once I shot an enemy about 6 times with one and nothing happened, other times it would take the same enemy down in one.

Okay fuck it, I'm stuck in Lair of the Blind Ones. I've gone all the way through the level 2 times now and I can't find but the 1 Thermal Vent, I've got the Nuke Part and the Eagle Feather but can't find the switch to activate the Portal and get the token and I sure as shit can't figure out where the other Thermal Vents could be except behind a gate that needs a key that doesn't seem to exist.

I hate to have to pussy out like this, especially in a game with an automap tool but this shit's driving me up a wall.

Back when I played Turok 2 on the N64 I never finished the game but it left a good impression on me. The violence and weapons were top notch, and still are.

Then I downloaded the PC version years later and actually finished the fucking thing. It's the most unsatisfying game I have ever played.

I actually bought and refunded the remaster after playing an hour or so. I bought Mass Effect instead.

Turok 1 was better in terms of structure and rewards. A shame about the level design being so bland. Still a good game. Bought the remaster and stayed in my library.

Lair of the Blind Ones does kinda suck, it's not that you get lost but that once you realize the layout of the level it becomes very disorienting and repetitive. It makes it difficult to remember where you've already been, and the automap tool doesn't help.

It would be nice if you could leave levels before completing all the objectives once you reach the totem portal instead of having to loop until you find a checkpoint, but that's a bit of a nitpick.

Levels 2 and 4 got a face-lift.

On level 2, the first soul gate cannot be skipped at all, one of the aqueducts got a ladder and the ultra health is no longer there, the first sister of despair is now something you can't miss and the Eagle feather is next to the corridor with the last checkpoint.

LotBO was made more linear, the most obvious change is the underwater tunnels have no dead ends and all keys and switches are in a straight path, same with the thermal vents, you really can't miss them unless you got tunnel vision.

I have the black PAL. Also, german. They removed the gore and the blood completely. The only remnants of what it actually was could be witnessed with the war blade when blue electric sparks came from the enemy. Same with the plasma rifle. Up until the remaster I had no idea how brutal the game actually was.
For some reason, though, they kept the cerebral bore.

Turok 1 hat robots. Turok 2 actually kept all beasts, but removed the blood and gore altogether. I was really puzzled when I started the remaster and in the intro movie for the first level there were corpses everywhere. In the german version they simply removed all the corpses, so it just looked like the endtrails were posing and trying to look badass.

Frankly, I found all the battles to be rather disappointing. The mantid queen got me once because for some reason I couldn't hit her legs at the beginning. Started over, used grenade launcher, mantid mousse. Mother thing was a pushover and Primagen was just tedious.
Now I feel kinda empty. Nostalgia wears out. Might try a new run in Super Rok mode, though.
And of course fucking around with cheats. If I feel masochistic, I might start a hardcore run.

Believe it or not most people couldn't beak Turok 2 back in the day. I know I was only able to beat levels 1, 2, and 3 prior to the Remaster. The Remaster is a great way to get back into the game and actually finish it, I highly recommend it. Even beyond the nostalgia factor it's just a fantastic game that was only marred down by console limitations of its time (low frame rate, fov, etc), all of which is fixed now.

As a kid, I barely managed to defend the totem in Level 1. Got all the keys for Level 2, rode the Styracosaur and then I remember nothing. I think I got to where you get the Mag60, but that has to be the furthest I have ever been. Anything beyond that, cheats.
Yesterday I beat the Primagen for the very first time LEGIT and saw an end I have never seen before.
But to answer your question, yes, it is wrong, but we were dumb kids, so it's excused.

I admit, I used a guide to find the lvl 3 Primagen key. They guide was from 1999. The guy wrote that he clocked in at 65 hours or something like that. That's probably without all secrets.
And I think not many people have actually beaten it, at least from what I can gather from these threads. I was 10 when it came out and 10 year olds just SUCK at video games.

Because for me, I throw it away and if there is any obstacle inbetween it gets stuck and it takes more than 5 seconds for it to come back.
I think that's a bug because I KNOW that on the N64 it just bounced off walls and you really had to throw it into another room or something for it to get stuck.
