Previous thread >>3817601

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Transcript of 1986 RCA product development meeting:

>CEO: So, the Dimensia range. What have we got?
>Chief designer: Well sir, it's big. Real big. We'll have to lay on extra shifts at the simulated woodgrain to satisfy production demand...
>CEO: Great! I love big wood. Keep it up!
>Chief designer: Thank you sir. Just one issue. It's the back. I can't seem to fill it. We need bigger connectors on there. RCA jacks simply can't cut it any more.
>CEO: Hmmmm...
>CTO: I think I may have a solution. In Europe they have a connector called SCART. It's big. Real big, and can do all sorts of things.
>CEO: Tell me more.
>CTO: Well, it can carry composite video in and out simultaneously for VCRs and such. It can automatically switch on connected devices and select the appropriate input when those devices are switched on. It can also work in reverse to switch on and configure the TV when a connected device is powered on. It could be used in the future to configure the TV for different aspect ratios when fed an appropriate signal. It also has support for RGB and enough pins left over to accommodate future signal standards. I hear Matsushita is developing an enhanced VHS standard using separate luminance and chrominance signals. Rumour is it will be called Super Video and we need to future proof. This connector could make out sets the envy of the world.
>CEO: Big...okay, I like the sound of it. Does the EIA have this thing on their books yet?
>CTO: Not yet. Would you like me to speak to them?
>CEO: Most certainly! Make sure they simplify it though. Take out all that artsy fartsy stuff you talked about. We only need composite and don't want to confuse our user base. Tell them it needs to be BIG.
>CTO: Errr...
>CEO: Great seeing you guys! Pencil us in 9 months from now for the launch meeting. Now, where are my golf clubs...

Second button down on the left hand panel switches between regular and underscan.

If that doesn't help i.e they still show when set to regular then you need to manually adjust the vertical raster size for normal operation.

Arcing/popping

Everything looks great and with a low contrast setting but it will freak out of i crank the contrast or on all white screens.

Upon further research replacing the flyback looks fairly simple but now I need to find out which part I need and edre to get it.

Since the pinout for the genesis 1 is so simple, and it's just a standard DIN8 connector, why wouldn't you just buy the parts from mouser and build your own RGB cable? Updating on progress so far:

I found the G2 trim. Just need to take apart the entire fucking monitor just to access the trim without killing myself. It's going to be a long night.

>> No.3856372

>>3856146

Okay. First I'll start off with tldr; I adjusted the G2 trim and the problem persisted. I'll check the caps.

Now with the detailed response...

This bastard of a monitor was NOT designed with maintenance in mind. It was possibly an afterthought; the trim is directly below the flyback, which usually isn't a problem. On all the PVMs and some of the BVMs I ever repaired, the component boards would either fold out or were easily removable, to some extent. Over here there are two MASSIVE pieces of metal attached to the front of the monitor, as well as with a bunch of unnecessary screws throughout the rest of the chassis, separating not only the component boards with a ridiculous amount of space but also my hopes and dreams of accessing the G2 as they were just close enough to make accessing any part of the flyback awkward and unwieldy.

So, after shocking myself on the power supply for the fifth FUCKING time I went gorillamode on the metal barriers. I completely destroyed them just so I could get access to the trim...only to find it was already adjusted. So, the quest continues...now to check the caps.

I'm just glad I got the monitor for free. For the rest of you: DON'T BUY A BVM 1315. DON'T EVEN TAKE A FREE ONE. Christ.

>> No.3856376

>>3856372

I will say the quality is about as good as you could expect from a 700 line BVM. But if it's not the caps I would be VERY hard-pressed to NOT throw it in the trash.

What type of garbage thrift store is that? Anywhere selling furniture and appliances I've ever went to at the bare minimum will help you load it into your vehicle. It's only once it's there that it become solely your problem.

>>3855830
Really all depends on the area. You can still find larger FD models (at least near me), but they're even heavier and more difficult to move than the equivalent sized models from the 90s, and not a definite on being free. $30 for a decent sized 90s Trinny with S-Video is by no means a bad buy, and is going to have better chances of not having (major) linearity/geometry problems than the flat models.

Used SCART sockets at the end though, for compatibility with OSSC snd consumer set though (still can use SCART-BNC breakout for RGB monitors).

Now I got Extron matrix switch with VGA connectors, and want to build custom cables for all consoles I own. VGA socket still can fit caps and resistors, I can omit 5V line and use separate cable for audio output.

the big metal box on the right is the SDI kit.

it's option and is a digital input accepting 480i. i noticed some moderately cheap adaptors let you convert hdmi to sdi and supposeably has compatibility with the 259M standard this 1354Q supports.

Yes (to a degree)

The stereo works perfectly. FM and AM are very clear. The turntable's motor works, but it needs a new belt.

The TV does work and I even had a portable DVD player hooked up to it using an rf modulator, but it looks like it has weak caps. The image doesn't fill the whole screen. It currently has sort of a "logarithmic" raster (widely spaced lines at the top, and crowded lines near the bottom). I tried messing with the v. size and v. linearity which did help, but it still didn't fill the screen completely.

I checked the Sam's photofact website and they do have documentation for this model. I'd probably just go through and replace all the electrolytics.

The amount of money you need to invest in hardware these days is autistic to the max. With a CRT monitor and an emulator I feel like you get a close enough feel at a reasonable price. I'll never ruin shit for myself by looking at a PVM/BVM.

As someone tired of emulating, with a shitty CRT, I'm considering buying a SNES flashcart so I can collect games more slowly/preserve them more easily. I'm not super into a/v stuff but just wondering if it's worth spending the extra money for a PVM/SCART switch etc or if I should just find a decent CRT for S video support?

I do plan on expanding my NES, Pc Engine and Saturn libraries (and actually using my Saturn once that cart is out, fuck that motor) which is why I'm considering RGB, but dunno if it's worth the effort for a non-super enthusiast

Post photos of the screen and where you have the cables connected.

If it's an NTSC Gamecube, and you're trying to use RGB (SCART), that's your problem. NTSC models don't have RGB available on the Multi Out, only Composite and S-Video. Only being able to see something with the brightness/contrast cranked all the way up and it just being a feint outline sounds like what happens you you trying to display RGB but only have a sync signal, and to be specific, composite video as sync.

PAL Gamecube has RGB, but you'll have to look into homebrew/hardmod to run NTSC stuff and/or 60hz junk.

What model is your PVM? Depending on whether it supports Component/YPbPr or not, you could just grab a Wii and grab a set of Component cables for it.

You could go the same route with the Gamecube you already have, but then you have two choices:

Buy the stupidly expensive official Component Cables/D-Terminal Cables(DOL010/DOL009) at $200-300.

Or.

Look into the GC Video project. Someone managed to put together an FPGA setup to generate RGB, Component, and HDMI/DVI from the same signals the official cable uses. Downside here is you either have to look into modifying you Gamecube or wait until a simple Plug&Play solution comes around(BadassConsoles is working on this, but it still isn't out yet). Upside is either route is going to be cheaper than the official cables, the ability to get Component/RGB/HDMI out of the later GC consoles(DOL101), and the ability to have to separate signals running simultaneously(Have RGB/Component run to your PVM, and then a second one, possibly HDMI, to a capture card or what have you)

L2MD takes Component no problem.

Most cost-effective route would be ~$40 Wii + ~$10 Component cables. Softmod, and pair with external HDD for lodsegams. Pic-sort of related; Neo Geo VC running from a Wii over Component.

Next would probably be a PAL GC, but possibly more trouble than it's worth.

3rd would be GC Video, and comes with the upsides of the first post.

4th is official cables. Only case I think these are a good idea are if you already have them and got them while they were "cheap" (sub $100) or somehow find some twit to sell you theirs at that sort of price.

This is the way I previously had things setup.

Actually just re-did my wiring a week or so ago as well. The consoles into switch side of things has stayed mainly with a couple exceptions.

Main changes are, essentially everything is routed to the Megaview first, and just sent down the line from there. SCART breakout connects to the Megaview, then passes to the Ikegami, and then terminates at the PVM's RGB2 input. Alternatively, with the transcoder swapped in, the RGB output follows the same path, but the Component Passthrough goes to the PVM's RGB1 input, and then out to the SD Trinny.

Only composite currently being run is the NES, which goes to the PVM, then Megaview, next to the Ikegami, and then to the HD Trinny; Only reason it doesn't head to the SD is in adjusting convergence, it's composite picture has become literally fucked and I haven't gotten around to figuring out what's wrong yet.

Wii U just goes to the HD Trinny at the moment over HDMI.

Genesis, SNES, PS2, and Wii all go into a 4-Way YPbPr switch (With the help of HDRetrovision cables, if they ever return.)

Both of these splitters are fed into my Sony KV-24FS120, filling all ports except for RF.

I have an Amiga 1080 at my desk I typically use for any composite/svid consoles, working on getting a custom SCART adapter for that. Different consoles, and even different games on the same console start their active area at different points of the screen. Depending, you can end up with games that get cut off on the left, or the right. On top of this, with the older ones where they have one set of settings(or in this case, potentiometers) to dictate h-center or otherwise, the very minor delay from chroma decoding can cause the same sort of centering issue with RGB vs Composite/S-Video.

If it bothers you too much, you can go into the service menu on that monitor, and adjust h-center(H Phase I believe?) to move it more towards the center. Only issue with this is then you'll have to worry about what it might do to another console you use; Might have to mess around a bit to find the happy medium that keeps them both as close to centered as possible.

Hi /CRT/. So when I was a kid my aunt from America sent me an NTSC SNES and I never got it to work because I was like 7 and had no idea about the difference between PAL and NTSC systems.

Recently I bought a converter and hooked it up to an old Sony Trinitron I have. It worked, but there were some pretty big problems. The screen would sometimes be aligned correctly, but other times it would would be completely off. Also the refresh was all messed up, like the screen was noticeably flashing, pretty much unwatchable. I got an RBG scart and it mostly fixed the flashing, but it's still not perfect.

Should I just give up trying to get an American SNES to work with my PAL CRT? I can't seem to identify where the problems are occurring. I know the monitor is good, so it's either the console, the cable or maybe the power converter. Anyone else have a similar experience? Sorry for the long post

I want to get a gscartsw, but I noticed it has a female scart port for output (I only have a BNC-to-female scart breakout cable).

Would something like the link below suffice?:
https://www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/audio-video-accessories/scart-adapters/male-rgb-break-out-scart-to-4-x-bnc--2-x-rca-converter-cable

Or should I get a regular old male-to-male scart cable to make do with what I have?

Thanks in advance.

Just want to know if a genuine Sony SCART is higher quality than say a Blaze Ultimate SCART cable or whether I should go with Retro Console Accessories or retrogamingcables.co.uk. The chinkshit ones I have tried are exactly that.

Terminators would only apply to PVMs and other professional sets. I'm not even entirely sure whether the FS100 would have any outputs, and even if it does, they should affect things like an unterminated BVM would.

While it's possible the set has just seen a hard life and is just having issues with contrast, I think you may be able to fix or at least remedy your issue a bit with some service menu tweaks, primarily to Gain and Bias settings.

That may be more than you're willing to do though; If you decide to go that route, getting a copy of the service manual would be handy, but it's not something you want to just dive into and go changing everything.

>>3875036
That's absolutely fixable; That would be a setting in the service menu; Depending on the model you have, it might have different names.

Just a note; Fixing it for one console can lead to it being thrown off for another, so I'd suggest testing multiple systems when doing the adjustment so you can find a happy medium.

I just got a Sony KV32-FS100 from friends of family who have been saving it for me. It looks great and has component and S-Video, but I'm kind of disappointed. I already had a Sansui 27" SDTV that was perfectly fine, and I was hoping that the sony would be HD (at least 720p) so I could run my 6th/7th gen games on it. PS3 looks okay on it from my tests, but it's not quite what I was expecting.

Still pretty happy with it, just not sure what I'm gonna do for my TV setup. I was gonna have the two CRTs next to each other, and use a 1080p LCD when I needed to play HDMI games. Now I'm not so sure. One thing's for sure, the sony isn't going anywhere once it gets set someplace. I can barely slide the thing across the ground, forget lifting it.
