KOF 99 museum -- not the biggest fan of the game, but the stages are the best in the series

These look so much better than the 3D stages in Evolution on Dreamcast, holy shit.

KOF'99 had a particuliar atmosphere compared to the rest of the NESTS saga, let alone the series. It was kinda dark, edgy, cyberpunk-ish. The OST, the presentation also reflect that.

I'm not one to throw the word "comfy" around a lot, but really, I can't think of a better way to describe this stage.

From a sprite perspective it's not that impressive but I remember what an impression MK1 backgrounds made on making the game feel like an epic Bruce Lee film.

I don't want to be "that" guy, but honestly, I've seen KoF'99 and Last Blade BGs posted everywhere for a decade if not more. I think by now everyone remotely interested in retro 2D graphics knows about them.

I always actually really liked 99. I know a lot of people didn't care for the striker business and honestly Im at best ambivalent to it myself but something about the overall package just felt right to me.

Also it's one of the games with Kasumi Todoh in it and I can't not a love a game with her.

It started out as a Universal Monsters game, but Universal refused to license the monsters out, prompting producer Alex Jimenez to create their own characters; Jimenez said he did it in about an hour.

MK had some great ones.

There was always so much going on in the background.

That Living Forest level, or the Goro Lair level, ooowee

There's a lot I don't like about MK3, but I dig the whole Outworld invading earth realm vibe.

Living forest is easily the best MK level though.

Well Ive said this a lot of times but I really do feel that not enough fighting game developers really understand the importance of crafting a proper setting.

Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting had it's South Town which added a lot of dimension and gave some real stakes to what was going on in the world and why stopping Geese or Mr Big is probably a good idea. Last Blade created a setting that was showcasing a world recovering from a civil war that was filled with sorrow but at the same time filled with the wonders of a new world.

MK3 had outworld invading and was showcasing how Kahn was actually doing damage to the world we knew and tried to protect. Rival Schools showcases the different schools fighting and created a city for it's characters to live in. Vampire was just completely off the wall insane.

Street Fighter though was so painfully vanilla. It was always just some vague level made to house a different stereotype. Cammy is British so you're in England, Here's a Soviet Construction sight, here's a Japanese Bathhouse. It may be the WORLD warrior but everything is too disconnected and the only thing we have to attach to it's world is it's passing resemblance to ours

Honestly, that's how I feel about the animated movie.

>> No.3877891

That lastblade background is particularly striking in that it chose to depict wild dogs eating presumably the remains of soldiers, something SF would never consider putting in as a background detail. They'd rather have a bonus character running around pulling a silly face

This is a lie told by some beaner hack that only had the idea of including monsters. Capcom Japanese artists produced thousands of character concepts.
