Why does Jagged Alliance 1/2 never get any attention on /vr/? How about starting it off with

> Favorite merc

I started a new game of JA2 and I'm not overly happy with my primary party: IMP (mechanic), Hitman, Grizzly, Grunty, MD, and Ira. I picked Grizzly and Grunty for heavy weapons for when I get to Meduna, and Hitman because I can't play JA without Hitman Hennessey. I'm already sick of MD's shit, and I would normally have Fox be my medic but I played her last game. I'm tired of dragging medics around in my primary team so I'm thinking of ditching MD to the Biff and Flo trainer squad and hire Razor and an explosives guy to round out my primary party. Any thoughts? How do you usually set up your teams?

The 1.13 patch/mod has a multiplayer and coop support, but how do they work exactly? Do all the players create their own characters like in the singleplayer game and then join the coop host's game or what?

And that's it. No other mods. If I recall correctly I did have some problems with the game screen not showing properly, but that's probably because of my screen resolution, and playing in windowed mode fixed that.

Same here. The micromanagement is insane at almost all times but the huge battles that come of it are rather neat, if wearing. My main party is usually.
- IMP
- Someone good at throwing grenades (later mortars)
- One sniper
- One good spotter
- A close combat fighter

My first time I went with IMP, Lynx, Igor, Hitman and Grunty. I usually got a guy that could use explosives or technical stuff (lockpicks, bolt cutters), like Barry.

My second party was the tank buster party (for the later missions). Magic, Iceman, Bull, Dynamo and that guy from MERC that uses knives.

What took me a while to get was how you could walk backwards/strafe to prevent interrupts, and storming defensive positions. By endgame, I just mortared the fuck out of rooms.

I think melee/throwing knives don't count against stealth, even if you miss the attack. I can be wrong, but I think even silenced weapons have a "ping" when you hit someone - that's what makes the enemies look that way, not their comrade falling.
In Silent Storm, there's something like this - if you kill someone with a silenced weapon, people won't look at their dying comrades, but if even ONE shot misses and hits a wall or the floor, it will alert everyone nearby.

When it comes to Insane level amounts of enemies, the major battle is action economy. I've never been so bold as to have such a small team on a night attack, I'd still prefer at least a full squad for covering more angles and backup for when shit inevitably goes tits-up. Loud grenades, like flashbangs especially are my go-to to attract attention away from a key area is usually my best idea if I need to break contact because the goons will tend to go investigate.

Daylight battles are more my thing anyway, but to avoid being over-run, especially in counter attacks, absolutely gotta have massive amounts of firepower available to deal with the numbers as quickly as possible and burn out enemy actions so they can't just rush, because they will eventually work out that they can. Gases and smoke I've found are a fun trap, as enemies with gas masks will just use if for concealment, mass up and make themselves susceptible to hitting with incendiaries and fragmentation blasts. And gotta love mines of all kinds when dealing with those counter-attacks.

Not played in a while though, is there an option in 1.13 yet to take off or turn down general explosive volatility? Was always a nightmare to deal with having to worry about basic grenades that were being carried getting set off by some vaguely nearby blast. Cooking off in extreme heat I could understand but for the most part it seemed more than a bit odd.

Yes, we call it Pistol Phase or Pistol Creep. You start with fucking handguns, and rifles don't become that good until you get some of their attachments.
Rifles are supposed to be used by the people that will climb a roof and overlook a street. Even though at the beginning, you'll be missing 50% of the time. Shotguns are for breachers (people who open doors and go around corners. They're AP intensive because of balancing issues. If you let 4 or 5 shots in the same turn, it would counter the low % percentage.

I think most strategy games suffer from this initial phase. Silent Storm is mostly the same. You start with a handgun that can fire 7 shots in a turn but can't hit accurately more than a few feet away. You can get a rifle pretty early, but the most you're going to let loose is 2 shots per turn.

The pistol phase seems better because you can get near the enemy and make mistakes without too much penalty, since it's the beginning. Rifles are boring because you're having a shootout with two guys while having 60% chance to hit with each one of your two shots.

Silent Storm was particularly nasty with this, because once enemies started getting SMGs, they loved to ambush you or wait in hiding. One single full clip burst can kill any character.

Mines maybe account for about 25% of the kills but they do a great help. Beyond that it's about limiting sight lines so smoke placed on the enemy, gas if it's available, followed by frags. Interrupts are probably the greatest thing, so gotta make sure everyone stays not just alive, but away. Gonna need canteens to restore fatigue, make sure minimal loads are carried, bags of ammo can be kept near the medics in the middle so more rounds can be passed over when needed. If night, a LOT of glowsticks and flares can be really helpful along with night vision because the goons will want to not be in the light.

And if all else fails, set fire to everything.
EVERYTHING.

Casualty distribution in those two pics should indicate where you're gonna catch a lot of goons in the open if you're using that map set.

Gonna need people with Squadleader trait and good leadership too to stop everyone just getting depressed.
And frankly, hose dem bullets. Precision can be left to marksmen and when up close and using pistols. Seriously make sure to have pistols, a lot of use out of them can and will be had once things get up close and everyone is getting worn down.
And you're gonna be spraying enough rounds down range from an elevated position that you will get head hits and suppress anyone nearby which is essential to prevent getting rushed.
Make sure you stay aware and keep having people not just looking down their sights but checking around, those goons can sneak right up on you if you're unaware, even in daylight. But make sure it's an appropriate person like a support dude who isn't busy rather than the MG carriers.

That's really fucking unprofessional of GOG. I guess they didn't bother to use a clean copy of the game.

I prefer my GOG games to be in a freshly-installed state. My faith in GOG is absolutely ruined. I should've known better than to trust a bunch of pollacks.

i sold her to some rednecks on a farm. she
won't come with me again, even after killing them off. this won't affect the game in any other way will it?
it was worth it either way. she is a whiny bitch. also, she hates malice, and i always like to keep him around.

Nope, all that does is remove them as a merc and lets you plunder the hicks gun stash.

I have always enjoyed using Conrad. Also, is hiring Slay (forever) worth it?

Slay has good marksmanship and good physicals. He's worth it

Is H2 Grumm the worst sector to attack? I always end up losing some of my best mercs.

Settings are stored in Ja2.set
Are these checkboxes from GOG install too or did you edit them? "Never move my mouse" was not enabled in retail.

I still play once in awhile. 1.13, everything else is way too easy anymore.

Is it really just "harder"? Someone said it's either bugged or completely fucked up intentionally and gives enemy unfair advantage while also having "non-linear" distance to cth calculation in a very unintuitive way.

Is that the one with the factory? It's one of the most heavily defended sectors without tanks, and you know how flushing people out of buildings in JA2 is hell. I can't even use my strategy of mortaring everyone to shit, because some stuff inside the factory is valuable.

This game is really difficult for me. I've tried playing it a few times but always die a lot near the beginning to the point that I quit playing.

The webms in here look cool though so I'm going to give it another try at some point.

The most important thing about those tactical shooters is that you have to keep line of sight to your enemy, and shouldn't rush actions. For example, if you KNOW there is someone right around the corner, don't just go right around in the same turn. Walk/run to the corner, and stop just short of it. That way, you'll have some leeway if the enemy tries to go around it himself (Interrupt), and you'll have full Action Points when the next turn comes up.
Most deaths in those games happen because you run right up to the enemy in a turn, wasting all your AP, just to be shot to death next turn.

Also, line of sight. I don't remember JA2's key, I think it's ALT. That way, you can move while strafing or even walk backwards. That's important because getting whoever sees the other first has a huge advantage.

Also, if you know someone is around the corner, throw a grenade to knock them off their feet. They are easy pickings once prone.

Jagged Alliance 1 never gets ANY attention at all. Any JA talk is 100% dominated by JA2.
