How do I turn it into a PS1 image playing machine?

>> No.3866553

You need to get Free McBoot on your memory stick and a way to swap discs. I have a fliptop case but they're kind of hard to come by these days. There's a tool called a "magic slide" that you shove under the tray to force the gears to turn and eject it without triggering the mechanism. You can buy it together with a utility disc that makes it easy to get the software from a USB drive onto your memory card.

You can use POPSTARTER to play isos from the Internal HDD, learn2mod your fat to play discs or this >>3866553

modchip and cd-r,

You fucked up if that was your goal. The only way to play PS1 games from image files on it is through a couple of the shittiest PS1 emulators ever developed, neither of which take advantage of the actual PS1 hardware.

Have fun burning and swapping games like it's the 90s again. Or you could buy a real PS1 and a PSIO, if you feel like throwing money at the problem.

can you post a tutorial for this? been interested in buying a dedicated HDD just for PS1 games on my PS2.

>>3866567
Don't. As >>3866565 explained, popstarter is just a PS1 emulator and not as good as the emulators you can get for PC. The only way to play PS1 games in native mode on a PS2 is from CD.

this was what I wanted to do in the first place.

Also I have a pal unit if that is going to be a problem

You can turn it into a ps2 iso machine with a $10 memory card. As other people have said psx games only work via disc unless you emulate. I you can either chip a psx or get a flip top for a slim ps2. The slim ps2 flip top is very easy to install

Raspberrypi + A decently large storage drive.

PS1 games be big, but they work great on a pi.

Dunno about swapping disks, tho...

1. get laser-fixes applied, if you got one of those PS2-revisions (SCPH−500xx)
2. get it mod-chipped
3. Use good CD-R media (Verbatim AZO)
4. ???
5. Profit!

POPStation/PS2PSXE is a shit.

>> No.3866752

+1 for POPStarter being an unreliable piece of shit. I got so many corrupted save files with it, and thats on the selected games that actually do fucking work.

I'd say compatibility rate is about 60%.

>> No.3866786

It's weird. They have SD card replacements for the optical drives of more obscure consoles like the the Saturn and Dreamcast, but not the PS2? Is there something special about the PS2 where you can't just fake it out? I can't imagine that nobody's tried...

If you could trick trick the PS2 into thinking some SD card device is its optical drive, it'd be pretty amazing for playing any PSX or PS2 game with full compatibility, on real hardware, with high quality video output.

>>3866786
the PS2 fat has a mechanical optical drive, as in the tray moves out, the entire mechanism drops and moves up.

It's not a simple pop top like those.

I guess nobody really cares about it because the PS2 supports hard drives.

pic related.
And I don't understand why the loading-mechanism matters when an ODE is being plugged into the data-port of the DVD-drive anyway.

>>3866803
only fats and one revision of the slims, though.
and only with a scarce adapter.

>>3866818
I was talking about the PS2 fat.

And there are several cables. It's not a "Port" like on the dream cast that can simply be plugged in. It's not as simple as unplugging 2 cables on the Saturn or 3 screws on the Dream Cast.

If you ever have worked on a PS2 fat you would know that Sony pulled some serious bullshit with cables, routing, and all that with the different models with the DVD drive. Some have flat flex, while others have straight up wire cables

popstarter doesn't use the ps2's hardware level emulation, it uses a shitty software emulator which is trash compared to the ps2's. I don't know if there is a good way to back up load PS1 games without using optical discs which is pretty undesirable because the ps2's lasers lol

>> No.3866890

>>3866790
I don't see how that's relevant? That's just one more fake signal for the tray sensor.

>>3866803
The PS2 HDD isn't 100% compatible with the entire library and can't do PS1 games.

>> No.3866891

Better get a real PS1, some games don't work on a PS2

its like 10 or 14 games on the best model of PS2, and a few dozen on the worst slims. Really a PS2 is far better. I think in those 14 games there's like one that's a big deal.

well, it's straight from Sony.
http://web.archive.org/web/20100309031347/http://us.playstation.com/news/consumeralerts/softwaretitles_75001/index.htm

they wouldn't have listed it if there wasn't something wrong.
maybe it's just a minor problem.
