No. Gaming is my only escape from an increasingly retarded and nationalistic society. Although that has nothing to do with why I play retro games specifically. I just don't care for the complexity of newer console architecture. It seems everything starting with the seventh generation is prone to inexplicable hardware failures that largely cannot be fixed. In fact, I'm pretty sure sending your like-new condition PS3 to Sony would only result in them sending you back someone else's beat up refurbished system that may have only a few months of life left in it.

It's a sad fact that older consoles are just easier to maintain, even though some of them are decades old now. Besides that, it's also a lot easier to emulate their less complex hardware, so you don't actually have to own any retro consoles to enjoy classic games.

I wouldn't say you're living out-of-time. For most people, there are still a lot of great retro games they've yet to discover. Maybe try to expand your interests instead of replaying the same handful of games.

Maybe I been watching too much jimquisition but god damn its not older games that depress me, its the new market

For me it all depends on association. I didn't play most retro games when they were released, mostly because I didn't had money to buy them and because I was a kid. But some games that I played too long ago, when I play them again, they bring back the memories and it can be a nostalgic bad trip.

This is specially true with Banjo-Kazooie. It is a game that I played A LOT when young, but not that much through time, like OoT, Diablo or PS1 games. I liked it a lot, and it specifically reminds me of being innocent and kind of afraid of the mysterious places in the game, and that was part of the challenge, and my mother sitting by my side to watch the game unfold, or the popcorn and chocolate milk I drank at the time, sitting at this old wood chair instead of the couch.

So, in a way, it is most abou remembering a simpler, magical time of my life than games making me feel out of place.

OP here. This is probably closest to how I'm feeling. It's not really nostalgia I feel, it's more despair.

I feel culturally disconnected from the world. Playing old games make me realise that what I love is not popular, and likely will never been popular again, and what I do have is all that has been made and anything new coming out is likely not going to come close.

Recoving from pneumonia, so thoughts are a little cloudy.

I can see how it's easy to trivialize this, I mean they are just video games after all. I just feel a great disconnect between myself and where the industry has gone.

Daytona has a new game coming out this year. Its 8000$. I play mostly 90's arcade games because 99% of todays games are crap.

However there are a few exceptions. Believe it or not but there are a few current games out there that are actually enjoyable. Rocket league comes to mind. It almost has an oldschool approach to its gameplay. Just give ita try man. Not all hope is lost. Also project y/ paprium is coming out this year, if you are into beat em ups.

I'm 25 too and I have to say that I feel exactly the same as OP. There's something called "Zeitgeist" that just proves that this isn't anything new. Its in some way unconfortable to think that I'm also disconnected culturally to the real, 2017 world, and I'm not 35, or 40 I'm 25.

Recently I started digging into the Sega realm and even when I'm loving what I play, It always returns to me some kind of bad feeling about the how much time has passed...

Now videogames are in the wave. Not real videogames of course but the "videogames" that zeitgeistly have changed It meaning and still being called that without any resemblance to real games.

Its not some kind of reiterative complain about the moder industry and market society and shit. It's just, we were just a few, and nowadays we are even less.

One of the things I love most about the Just Cause games is how the physics remind me of those old Sega arcade racers. I spent dozens of hours playing it like open world Sega Rally.

As for feeling depressed, it depends on the specifics. If it's just old games that you enjoy, but you're happy in life otherwise then you might just have very specific taste. I get a lot of old school vibes from some modern games, but everyone's different. But if it's more of a general sense of feeling out of place and time then you might have a more serious problem you're tackling with.

I really disagree with this notion. Mechanics like checkpoints are just for convenience and sanity.

Have you ever heard of "Gradius syndrome"? Losing a ship in most Gradius games tends to send you back to a much earlier checkpoint (not in the modern sense) with all your upgrades stripped away. Given the difficulty of the series, losing one ship at any point in time effectively means you may as well give up and start a new game, because there's no way enemies will give you a sufficient window of opportunity to get powered-up again.

This does not "teach" the player anything. It's a pointless tedium for the sake of being tedious. Unless you're popping Ritalin or you have severe autism, it's unlikely you'll find these kinds of mechanics tolerable, which may be way shmups are considered somewhat niche.

Your post nails it, and I see that the problem I have has gone completely over the heads of most in here. Likely (and this isn't a slight against them) because they still find a lot to love & get excited about in modern games, while I certainly do not. I really can't understand the excitement & enthusiasm over the new Zelda, Horizon or For Honor.

It's the absence of the formula that brings me down. Eventually I will have exhausted the old catalog. I'm not invalidating the existence of modern arcade-like games though. You're both wrong though. Do you dismiss indie games entirely? Because indie games are keeping the old spirit of game making alive. And you don't even need to go that far, Hollow Knight or Furi for example were absolutely amazing, and those were some of the latest great ones I can remember.
Also BotW has guys like HappyConsoleGamer saying it's the best game he's ever played. I do think the industry's got a problem, but I think you're the one making it way worse than it is by just assuming everything is CoD or Ubisoft. Hell, even Ubisoft has Rayman Origins/Legends which are some of the best platformers of all time IMO.

The price of admission is a few hundred dollars for either a dead system or a system with one game. I mean, if you're already feeling discontented with modern games, that's a pretty big gamble. A lot of Zelda games get good scores. Skyward Sword got a good score.

Tell you what, I enjoyed Chuck's Challenge 3D, Tembo, and I'm looking forward to a new twin-stick shooter with Eugene Jarvis of Robotron fame in the development team. These are still exceptions to the norm, and few of these indie games have the corporate backing and professionalism of the types of games we enjoyed from back in the day.
