Deus Ex thread. Just started to replay this game after few years beating it for the first time. This game is so damn good, it's been my favorite game since I played it for the first time.

I remember during my first playthrough I didn't even know you could change HUD and menu color. I'm now playing through the whole game using the comfy green ionstorm theme. This game is full of surprises.

Picture related, that's what happens if you talk to strangers! Remember that, kids!

Man, one of the things I really love about this game is that you can't get a game over for anything (except dying). You can fuck up every mission, have people die or shit go terribly wrong, and the game still lets you keep playing.

One of my favorite examples of this is in Battery Park, with the hostages in the subway. You can sneak past them and just get on the train without rescuing them or subduing the NSF guys. When you get off, Paul will chew you out about leaving the people there.

It's little things like that which elevate this game into something sublime.

How are you supposed to break the doors if you don't want to waste lockpicks? Some of the doors have health, but they can't be broken with melee weapons. Doors can be shot with shotguns and other semi-heavy weapons.

There is this one cabinet in unatco base that is always locked and has health, but it doesn't break with shotgun. It does break open with LAM, but I don't want to waste those sweet sweet little peppers on that.

What a shame. My version of JC would never ever surrender. How come the older augmented people in original DX are shown as monstrosities and mockeries of human form with their disgusting bulky augmentations, but in new Deus Ex prequels the augmentations are slick and lean like sports cars? Look at Adam Jensen, did Ferrari design his arm?

Because the prequels are basically just fanfiction. HR and MD have very little aesthetic or technological chronology with the original game.

Actually the prequels are anything but fanfiction. Human Revolution was originally going to be a completely different game, but had the Deus Ex IP slapped on it mid way through development. Are we talking about the unmodded official game? Putting both a scope and laser on a gun ruins the pinpoint accuracy of the laser sight. Never put the two things onto one gun.

The best thing to do is put a laser on a stealth pistol to use as a close to mid range weapon. and put a scope on the regular pistol to use it as a sniper. Master pistols and put a couple accuracy mods on the scoped pistol and the aim won't move.

Deus Ex is great, but some areas feel like they're missing something. Like that empty area around the compound in Hong Kong. Feels like there was supposed to be some other locations around it. It's so empty it's eerie.

Also, how come most areas are so dark with the regular gamma setting? Most of the lamps are off by default so you have to go turn them all on if you want to have some lighting other than the vending machines.

Original Deus Ex was obviously set in the futuristic worldview of pre-smartphone generation, and the later Deus Ex games made the future look more futuristic by our modern standards. Obviously Human Revolution's future makes more *sense* by modern standards, but it obviously fucks up the Deus Ex canon.

OG DX was released when most people still didn't have mobile phones or internet connection, and they couldn't know that some mundane everyday tech in DX (ie. public phones) would be obsolete in few years after the game release.

Original Deus Ex reminds me of Strange Days. Both visually and story wise.

It kinda sucks how the dead/unconscious bodies don't explode into gibs when thrown from roof. If JC jumps from tall enough building he's splashed into pile of bloody goo when he hits the ground.

Also, it seems that the unconscious bodies are immortal. After prodding some guy to sleep he seems to take no damage from pistol even if it's a headshot. You can't even drown them. They die on explosions, but it would be sweet to execute them when they're asleep like in Hitman. Unconscious and dead seem to be the same thing on regular enemies. I guess it has more effect on characters important to story if you want to incapacitate them but not kill them.

Does Deus Ex have some proper coop mode? Some of the maps are big enough for multiple players and it would be cool to have players approach the main target from all the possible routes at the same time.

How come my steam version of Deus Ex: GOTY has so blurry textures? I know it's an old game and it has blurry textures, but I specifically remember one of the Unreal Engine features being the blurry main textures changing to sharper detailed textures when the player goes closer to the walls etc.

Picture related, I took that screenshot from vanilla DX years ago. Look how sharp the textures are when I stand closer to the wall. My steam version of DX doesn't do that. Or maybe my resolution is already so high that the sharper layer of textures also shows up blurry?

Adam is an illuminati genetic experiment, he's the first step of the Denton Project. It's implied Adam's DNA was used to make the Denton brothers (at worst, Paul is a direct Adam clone).
His arms look designed by Ferrari because they were designed by Sarif, the Enzo Ferrari of augmentations; they're top notch from a technological standpoint, because Sarif bacasically made Jensen a walking prototype of conceptual military tech -that never got actually produced (considering it was still in development when augmentation research got pretty much illegal worldwide). Being the Head of Security of the biggest (probably) augmentation/biotechnology company in the world, other than Sarif' private investigator/personal hit man/industrial spy/field agent, Jensen got all the fancy stuff. It was only possible because ofhis unique DNA.

Look at the other augmented characters, it's a freak show; you get many NPCs noticing the quality of Adam augs, even when they're mostly hidden. Because they look out of place with so many third world-looking mechanical prosthesis around.

If we consider the HR timeline, aug development already stopped by the time of Mankind Divided, so people like Anna and Gunther are surviving remnants of earlier decades; their augs are supposed to be nothing but the same technology they had years ago, that's why it looks so outdated.

You could argue that augmentation development would never stop on a military level, but we know they focused on nanoaugmentations and physiopharmaceutical augs.

The original Deus Ex was going to be much closer to the newer aesthetic (according to the concept artworks at least), but as you can imagine, hardware limitations made it impossible to use such complex designs.

Deus Ex ended up using a Blade Runner/Matrix cyberpunk aesthetic, while HR and MD clearly went for a Ghost in the Shell look.
I'm not saying the original isn't superior or anything, but despite the fact the newer ones tried to do "their own thing", they weren't that inconsistent with the original lore as it seems. It's pretty clear Eidos devs were at least fans of the original, as the newer trilogy was going to be pretty much a direct prequel of the first game. Look at Mankind Divided: Jensen is working for the soon-to-be-UNATCO (his actual boss is even the same guy JC was working for), and the whole game is clearly a set up for a larger Illuminati-focused plot. It was probably going to be "How Bob Page and Majestic 12 took over the Illuminati"; shame we'll never get that because of Square jewness and capeshit easy money

God I wish non-lethal weapons in this game weren't such crocks of shit. I grew up playing Thief: The Dark Project on Expert so if a game gives me the option of sneaking through missions without killing anybody I fucking have to do it. It's a hardwired necessity for me.

So far the most useful ones are the pepper spray and shock prod, but ammo for those is not terribly common, especially the shock prod, and trying to knock somebody out with the normal riot baton is a fantastic way to get yourself shot in the fucking face, especially since it resets their "stunned" status if you gave them a nice spray beforehand.

So far it seems like the best way to do non-lethal runs in this game is to just spray, gas or Fire Extinguish them and then run past while they're rubbing their eyes, because knocking people out safely seems to be next to impossible. The mini-crossbow can seriously go fuck itself, it's so goddamn useless.

Then later I know I'm going to come up against those assholes in powered exo-skeletons, and the only way I can think of to get past them without killing is with the invisibility aug. Generally I seem to remember always giving up on playing without killing at about the halfway point, even if I make exceptions like "named boss characters don't count"

The bosses in HR were awful whether you were playing non-lethally or not.

They also never had anything like my favorite moment in the first game, where Walton Simons showed up for a duel and you could just run past him and leave. That's a lot cooler than a straight boss fight to me because I can imagine him standing there like a dork thinking, "Wow, really? Really?"

Anyway I just like sneaking around and not killing people if I get the option to. It probably has something to do with Thief being the best game ever made and having a huge impact on me as a kid. Don't be a faggot whining about how I want to play the game

Actually the crossbow is the most useful weapon in the game when you know how to use it. Enemies will investigate crossbow bolts the same way they'd investigate you smashing a wall with a crowbar. >> No.3856873

Use the crossbow, you newbie. Shoot a wall or object. Enemies will run toward the crossbow bolt (any kind of crossbow bolt, doesn't have to be flare bolts). That's when you run past 'em or whack/zap 'em in the back. When enemies are in the "alert" state, they cannot hear your running steps, so don't fucking sneak, just RUN past them or if you're good at the game you can RUN toward them and whack/zap like 2 or 3 enemies in a row. I basically gave you the "secret weapon" to doing no-death runs. You're welcome you edgy faggot. Why? Deus Ex universe got different from our reality during its 90s.
The first game would have been more high tech-looking as well if they developed it for an averagely stronger hardware; the moment they got able to use more detailed models, they went full sci-fi with Invisible War.

I agree, HR look too advanced compared to DX at first, but consider that
-it's humanity at its highest point
-it's been a downfall since then
-huge financial crisis, war, death, destruction
-by the time DX took place, the world was already a ghetto-version of its former self
-Mankind Divided proves the rest of the world is still pretty much the same as it is now, only a few highly advanced metropolis got the Neo Tokyo 3-tier treatment like Hengsha and Detroit

Stuff like DX people using paper newspapers instead of the 800€ holographical tablets they used in HR make sense if you consider they're basically third world countries by that point; when you literally got people dying in the streets, wasting resources on lighter phones and shiny cars is probably far from your priorities as a society

You could argue that such tech would cost way less by the 50s (which wouldn't be wrong), but consider tablets weren't even a thing when DX was developed;
Half the tech crap in HR is a futuristic version of stuff we're using today, and you can't possibly expect Ion Storm to predict unreleased tech
At the same time, using the "90s retro future" aesthetic for the newer games would have been a bit tryhard (they would have looked like 90s sci-fi movies, which often had a pretty generic style compared to the much more inspired cyberpunk aesthetic established during the 80s)

That said, DX realism has a purpose: by the time DX got released, there were basically no games set in the real world. Walking through real cities and seeing real monuments and stuff was really ground breaking back then, almost a selling point for some people. Needless to say, it's not like that anymore

Just install deus exe
http://kentie.net/article/dxguide/
and then the direct3d 10 support
http://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/

And you're good to go. Works on also on steam! It takes like 1 minute to set those up together downloading included. Put your FOV on about 90, and the HUD scaling on x2. Of course these two little options are up to you, but I personally would recommend putting them so because otherwise the default FOV is way too narrow, and the default HUD is way too small.

This way you'll be playing vanilla, but with modern PC support. Unreal engine 1 has this nice little "infinite detail" type of deal going on, which means that the textures will get sharper the more closer you get to them. Together with that Direct3D 10 support and deus exe the detail will pop out better than before.

In that one laboratory there is a note about Denton and other his kind of augmented agents that mentions how all the nano-augmented agents are suffering from albinism, and for that reason they are wearing black leather coats and dark glasses to balance their whiteness. Could this be a remnant from the original draft of the game where Denton was an albino by default?

Denton is canonically white according to IW, but in the original DX box art he could be any skin color.

The first third is where the game world and characters respond and change most according to your actions. After you defect to the NSF the narrative is essentially locked with the only differences being how you proceed through the levels. The ending also doesn't correlate in any way with what you've done throughout the game.

heavy weapons is awesome. don't listen to the idgits who say don't put points into it. It's fine to put points into heavy weapons.. just not in the beginning of the game when you don't have as much GEP ammo. after the first 1/4 of the game you'll be swimming in GEP ammo. also, don't forget that you can use white phosphorous GEP ammo on human enemies so that they don't blow up so that you can actually loot their bodies.

GEP rockets and Assault Rifle grenades are my favorite things about the game. Nothing as satisfying as blowing up 5-6 enemies with a single boom.

I'm using the spy drone augmentation for the first time now and it's pretty cool, especially now that I have leveled it up to be really robust. I didn't take that augmentation in my first playthrough because I thought it sounded stupid, but now that I have actually used I like it very much.

It's like a super accurate EMP grenade. It's kinda overpowered if there's a charger bot around to recharge you after every blast, but it's great because there aren't that many regular EMP grenades laying around in the game. I'm currently in the shipyard and there's plenty of security bots to fry.

Though there is one thing I don't understand; where the fuck does the drone come from? From JCs ass? Does he hold the drone between his buttcheeks? No way was the drone in the augmentation canister. Honestly, what the fuck.

Square Enix should do an HD remaster of Deus Ex. Like, game would benefit a lot from improved graphics, and even if they added stuff like iron sights, it'd actually work better with realistic feel of the game.

I think answer to all those is 'cut content'. Game was made on a shoestring budget, and a lot of stuff was cut - I know that option to stay with Unatco instead of betraying them, and a female JC are confirmed to have been planned, and cut (we can see elements of it e.g. in the fact that you can read emails that say Unatco planned to send JC to Hong Kong as an assassin, perhaps to kill Tracer Tong - which would also explain why Luminous Path compound is built like you're supposed to fight through it, with security cameras and stuff).
