Nah. Steampunk is gay and everyone knows it (even/especially the people who participate in it). It's retro-futuristic memeshit that makes no sense.

Cyberpunk is near-futurism that actually makes a moderate amount of sense, and its aesthetic gets modified constantly based on what's going on in the world right now, re: technology, government, social trends, etc.

Cyberpunk is all about "this shit could actually happen in the next 50 years". Steampunk is a hotel conference room full of fags pretending corsets are pragmatic and electricity never existed.

The first two Wipeout games have a bit of a gritty cyberpunk feel to them. Especially tracks like Korodera, Talon's Reach, Firestar and Gare d'Europa. The acid techno soundtrack drives this feeling home as well. Wipeout 3 feels less gritty and dark but I feel like it depicts a bleak, sterile and realistic take on what the future's going to be like.

Sometimes for the worse. Sometimes for the better.
Early adopters probably didn't too much in the way of prophesying and future world building just figured Gibson got it right and dove straight into making stories for the setting.
Writers tend to be more tech illiterate, so Gibson basically handed them a whole new genre template and explained some of the rules of that world to them as it were.
It's not really much different from how basically 90% of fantasy is basically Tolkien / Tolkien extended / Tolkien rebooted.
Lord of The Rings created a large world, a genre, showed the stuff and explained the rules and the people who don't know a shit ton of languages and mythology just used that template.

>I think the appear of a lot of cyberpunk is how strangely it ages.

Not really for me. Cyberpunk is basically just focused, high concept sci-fi in places with a heavy dose of atmosphere and "cool" factor. There was a point where "duude the future's gonna suck but it'll look cooool" to the slightly more modern "yeah now's kinda the future so it's what imagine shit'll be like in 20-30 years, but it's not as far-fetched".

There was a point where Cyberpunk went from far out stuff to slightly more believable and grounded stuff. Personally I'd point to Ghost in the Shell as a good barometer for when that happened. The first movie.
