Hello /vr/, I really want to play this game. What's the best version?

Snes version is pretty solid
Famicom is better if you know moonspeak
Gba with snes patch is top tier
iOS and android is okay for FFIV & V
But it gutted FFVI so badly it's borderline unplayable

>> No.3856579

>>3856574
There's also a patch for the snes version with the GBA translation. That one is the best.

How is the PSX version? Isn't it just the SNES graphics but with FMVs? And how is the translation and the music?

>> No.3858168

>>3855129
Honestly, the fan translation for 6 on SNES with all the bugfixes is the best. Loses a few okay jokes from the Woolsey translation but it also gets rid of all the unfunny ones. I'm willing to take that trade. The translation may be too direct, but at least there's no character rewrites in it.

>>3857964
>Isn't it just the SNES graphics but with LOAD TIMES
Yes, and that's why you should ignore it. Watch the FMVs (There's one opening, one ending) on Youtube and play the SNES version and you'll have a superior experience.

>> No.3858184

>>3858168
this.

The SNES version is technically superior, both in audio and visuals. you just need a translation and bug patch to fix it up.

Ah, I didn't know there's just two cutscenes total. SNES would be better then.

What about Chrono Trigger? And is there any other Squaresoft port that warants playing on a PSX due to new content(Like FF1's easy mode)?

>> No.3858754

>>3856845
Square wanted someone to re-translate it because of the bad feedback to the FFVII translation. That's why the Ted Woosley translation for Final Fantasy V and VI had to go for Tom Slattery's version.

>Final Fantasy IV Namingway Edition

Using modern names where possible, and abbreviations where necessary, all items, spells, commands, jobs, and monsters are renamed. Monster stats, including the final boss, are restored to their original, along with spell learning rates. Also added to the mix is a B button Dash rather than a toggle or just walking everywhere.

http://fantasyanime.com/finalfantasy/ff4/roms/Final_Fantasy_IV_[T+Namingway8.1].zip

>Final Fantasy V Advance

Pre-patched with the sound restoration patch. Recommend playing this version until a better version of the SNES translation is released.

http://fantasyanime.com/finalfantasy/ff5/roms/gba/Final_Fantasy_V_Advance_(U)_[SoundRestored].zip

>Final Fantasy VI - Ted Woolsey Uncensored Edition

It makes fixes to the original script where needed, and uncensors it and the game as well. The graphics are reverted back to the Japanese original, including the title screen and the final battle. Also added was character classes in the menu, expanded spell and Esper names to match further releases, as well as renaming monsters and items. This is the highest quality uncensored re-translation that the fan community offers

Jesus fuck. You autists have to start shilling these stupid fucking ROM hacks anytime FF6 gets brought up.

Here's a less biased breakdown of the unfortunately numerous versions of this game, OP:

>SNES
Ted Woolsey is a fucking idiot. Anyone who worships this man is a basement-dwelling autist and you should promptly discard their opinions. That said, the SNES version uses a terrible translation that censors too much shit and takes too many liberties. There are also a number of graphics censored to comply with Nintendo policies.

>SNES re-translation projects
For the sake of your own sanity, don't go anywhere near these. They're either autistically literal, or the "translator" simply ran the lines through Google translate because he didn't possess any actual knowledge of Japanese. Also, every author who has ever attempted to retranslate this game has demonstratively terrible knowledge of formal English grammar.

>PS1
The black label version has ridiculous load times. The Greatest Hits reprint cuts down the load times somewhat, but it's still annoying. This is more or less based on the SNES script, but with a few revisions and un-censored parts. The script is still shit.

>GBA
Re-translated, presumably by Alexander Smith. The script is really no more accurate than before. I'd even say this translation is worse. Also, the game has an ugly ass font and ramps the palette up to technicolor in case you happen to be playing it on a non-backlit GBA.

>Mobile
I don't even know where to start with this release. Just Google a screenshot and see for yourself what a travesty this port is.

Conclusion:
If you don't understand a word of Japanese, I would weakly suggest playing the Greatest Hits PS1 release, because it's likely the least insufferable, least compromised version of the game you'll ever get your hands on.

I guess this is too much to ask for, but can you remember what sort of mistakes the official translations make? Besides "son of a submariner".

Most people complain about Woolsey, but you seem to hate all of them so I'm kind of interested.

>> No.3861001

>>3858737
No, they're all better on the original consoles, especially FF1 considering the ruined tone and graphics the remakes have,

>what sort of mistakes the official translations make?
Basically every single time Kefka says something funny it really should have been played straight. On the one hand I kind of don't mind him livening up a boring villain but on the other hand it's a complete rewrite and that's hard to defend. The English speaking fanbase seems to think of Kefka as a clown, when he's actually just an angry sissy poofter.

Not the guy you were replying to obviously. You can tell because I haven't called anyone a faggot yet.

Considering there are time Japanese doesn't translate well into English, what was done to him in localization made him so much more memorable. If not for Nintendo of America's censorship policies, and the tight schedule of the release of the game, it might have had a lot things ironed out. I know some of you hate hacks and patches, but I also give another vote to Woolsey Uncensored Edition. It keeps those nostalgic lines, fixes necessary bugs, cleans up the translation, and uncensors everything.

There's no best version, they all have compromises. Imo GBA is probably the closest to best with the retranslation but the resolution is lower and the sound is worse. The other versions of this game are worse, the phone graphics look like trash.
