MAME general.

What Arcade games have you been playing?

I've been listening to Viewpoint. That soundtrack makes the game worth playing.

Rule of thumb: download the biggest version of the ROM to your ROM folder, then hit F5 to audit, then try to play.

No need to do things from scratch:
>install MAMEUIFX http://mame32fx.altervista.org/home.htm
>put bios and roms on the "roms" folder (always zipped or in a folder with the same name as the rom)
>you can change other settings and the controls but there's no need

Thanks, but how do I know if the bios is compatible with the rom I found?

HOW2MAME:

>pleasuredome.co.uk

Download the full mame torrent so you have every rom available. On pleasuredome mame is always free against your ratio.

If you have every rom, you won't have missing rom problems which includes files like the various bios and system roms needed. It will just take the headache out it for you.

roms go into your roms directory under mame, do not unzip them.

CHD (hard drive games) are much bigger and have a separate torrent, but worry about those later.

>Make sure you get the MAME executable you downloaded matches the rom set you downloaded.

Unlike other roms, mame roms change all the time, so getting a new version of mame means you have to update all your roms too. For this, just torrent over your old roms and the newer sets that changed will overwrite the old ones. The vast majority won't actually have changed, so you will only have to download a small percentage of the torrent each time you update.

If there's an update, i.e. v0.144u1, these are small updates that will get wrapped up into the next major version, i.e. v0.145. Generally more trouble than they're worth, you can check the changelogs to see if there's something you wanted to play and whether or not to bother.

http://www.mameui.info/
Here, you can get MameUI 64, as well as the snapshots that will show you what each game looks like in the interface. I recommend downloading these, they just go into the snaps directory.

If you need 32 bit mame still, get builds from here:

http://www.progettosnaps.net/mameui_en.html

If you're more adventurous you can try out mame frontends like hyperspin and mala, but these take time and effort to configure. You can also get video snaps of the games from emumovies. Emumovies 240p vids are free to download, you don't need a membership for those.

I'll answer any questions if anyone has them.

Does anyone know if there is a way to emulate Ollie King?
It required a specific skateboard controller in arcades so I doubt it, but I really want to try it out because it is SEGA doing arcade games as well as Hideki Naganuma's great music

Not sure why it wouldn't, they're pretty much the standard in Japanese arcades.

Either way they'll be higher quality. Sanwa sticks are more "loose", while Seimitsu are "stiffer", if that makes any sense. I think it's the same for the buttons, I forget offhand. Either way, from the looks of things it will be difficult to replace the parts in your current setup, since both are generally designed for thinner control panels.

Yea, I'm not changing up this setup, will just build new. Besides the buttons and joysticks this one was built from spare junk, old computer, old desk, old kitchen cabinet boards... Thanks for the suggestions

Been playing a lot of games, mostly fighters and vertical shooters. Those are my favorites.

I use FBA through RetroArch, which means I can use its wide variety of shaders rather than just be limited to MAME's HLSL, which I find inferior to, say, CRT-Geom.

Still, though, you're right. We need higher resolution before we get truly authentic CRT emulation.

Could someone share his HLSL configuration? I've tried to make one but the image seems to be the same as raw.

It's very useful. Shows you the everything about the ROMs.
Which one is the parent? What clones are there? How's the emulation?

Also, play some Windjammers with your friends you fools!

Meh, I can't seem to download anything from pleasure dome. Bittorrent keeps telling me 'the torrent isn't codified correctly'.
