If I never played this game before, is it possible to beat it on a single evening (4-5 hours of playing) without using the 99 life cheat?

No.

Try thunder force 3.

Tough as nails. Try anyways.
Do your best, anon.

What do you think of Super R-Type and R-Type 3? Are those possible to beat in one evening of playing?

Awesome game

Yes, but only if you were born in the 80s at the latest.

90s and 00s kids are too big pussies to be able to finish it.

OP here. I am born in the late 80s but I still might be too much of a pussy.

I'm a late 80s kid and I can only get up to stage 6. In my defense though, I played it maybe 4 times total and it was on the Saturn (that has no slowdown).

I liked TF V much more.

I prefer 3, 5 and Gate of Thunder. 4 looks great though

What other STG can you 1cc?

4 is much better than all of those, but opinions.

OP here. I 1cc'd some Cave shmups: Donpachi (first loop), Mushihimesama Futari Black Label and Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu (first loop).

But the point is that I don't want to spend this much time on a single game anymore. I pretty much gave up on arcade games and only play more comfy console games by now. There are too many great games out there to spend 30+ hours of gameplay on a single 30 minute long game.

Thing is the latter levels of the game are awesome enough to justify getting to them and investing time. Stage 8 is amazing.

I played an loved Thunderforce 5, so about a year ago I overpaid and spent $50USD to get 4 on the original Mega Drive (even though I have the Gold Packs, and to make up for the great deal on Gleylancer). Over the course of a week, I mildly played the game (no session lasting long as work tires me out). Gradually making further and further in the game. Then at about a week's time, I started a run which went horribly bad, died a couple times and was tempted to hit the reset button as it is not a good run, but I just kept playing and actually beat the game in that run. It was exhilarating to climb that mountain to reach the top. I suspect the game in a hidden way dynamically adjusts its difficulty behind the scenes, like Resident Evil 4 does, still even with that suspicion I still enjoyed the feeling of beating Thunderforce 4 (without continues, I self-impose that challenge in all shooting games I play).

I had no idea the game has a 99 life cheat. Given how lightly I played TF4, I would say it is possible as I am not good at shooting games, and I spent about that amount of time on aggregate playing the game that week.

Also, the major wall I hit in my play was the stage called "The Wall" ... but it was okay, as the music to that stage is so fucking good:

TF5 on maniac difficulty > TF4.

Off-hand this sounds strange to me, like you have a completed-title-count quota to meet.
If the 30 hours are fun, they're fun, right?
But I assume I'm missing something, probably related to novelty--is it that you only enjoy games when you're regularly seeing new visuals you haven't seen before? (Not saying there's anything wrong with that; just trying to understand.)

Is it worth getting good at this game? I'm on a thunder force kick right now, I've beaten 3 and 4 for the first time within the last few weeks, and I've been playing 5 off and on but I'm not liking it as much as 3 and 4 so far.

I really don't like the top down levels of 2, and I've only gotten to the first side scrolling stage but it wasn't anything special. Does the game get better?

Is the wall the mini boss heavy stage, or that last real stage with the crab boss?

How hard was 4 for you?

I need to get back to TFV, I still couldn't beat stage 6's boss. I was close though.

I never messed with the options menu, so I always play on standard difficulty and standard number of continues.

It took between 15-18 attempts starting a new game from the first time I played it til I beat the final boss.

Thunder Force IV rewards learning. You have to invest time into it to get skill and progress in return. I wish more games would do that like thunder force iv does. Took me 3 days to first beat it back then. Prolly will take me 3 weeks if i would try it now. I am old and slow now :(

Nevermind, I thought the OP pic was thunder force 2. I was asking if tf2 got any better, thunder force 4 kicks ass and I'd love to try and beat the hardest mode

>> No.3847591

Is it me or is TF5 really screwy with difficulty? Free-range and its crazy overweapon version, CLAWs shield you from bullets still and you have more of them at a time, shields on top of that. The game feels so much easier than any of the others up until you get to the final stage and final boss, then it just kicks into gear. Hell you can beat some of the early bosses without them even getting a chance to attack you.

I'm a SHMUP casual but I fucking love the way you can control your secondary fire in GleyLancer. I thought the levels and boss fights were pretty solid, too. It's my favourite SHMUP so far.
