>Why is this game so good?

Because it's motherfucking Shining Force.
Are you one of the rare one's like me who prefer the first one over the second?
I just enjoy it's more serious tone and atmosphere, and the music in the game fits that perfectly. I listen to the soundtrack a lot to this day.

Also, since you made a SF thread you'd better brace yourself, the horsefags are coming.

I can't think of a single strategy RPG that requires you to grind.

I liked Shining Force and it was one of my favourite games growing up simply because it was the only SRPG I played. Now I'd say it's not as good as Front Mission, Tactics Ogre, Fire Emblem, Langrisser, etc. but it's still a good game.

I liked the atmosphere of the first game, it was nice and lighthearted without being annoying like shining force 2.

Langrisser requires grinding. First game I was able to beat my way to the very last stage without grinding, but the last stage had a very huge difficulty spike. Second game had this bullshit boss character at stage 3 or 4 where he could kill any hero character with 2-3 hits. All the other units (regardless of the type) weren't able to even cause 1 damage to him.

I am doing the first book and it says the team we assembled are the descendants of the Shining Force or something.

Also that first battle on the boat is kind of hard, I got up to the boss enemy with my main character and missed. Then on his turn he got two attacks and killed me from full health.

So I guess never rush in as main character.

I'll save you some time: Max and Kane are Ancients, they were frozen so they could wake up in the future and stop Dark Dragon when it returned (you can see their cryosleep coffins when you battle Chaos, I think). Dark Dragon is basically a bioweapon from the Ancients. Max was found washed ashore with no memory of his life in Guardiana and then the game begins.

That's all the actual story that you're missing out on the Genesis. Yeah, they were always meant to be time travelers, the credits song is called "Traveler from Distant Times" because of it.

The GBA adds/retcons some stuff about Darksol also being an Ancient who was turned into a bioweapon too in order to serve as the "mind" of Dark Dragon. Also magic comes from man-made satellites in space, every character has like a fanfic-tier backstory involving a bunch of off-screen places, events and things, and Runefaust's king has a daughter who's retconned into the Shining Force. There's also a stupid subplot about cards because Yu-Gi-Oh! was popular when the remake was being made.

I think that's about it, you're welcome.

Battle for Wesnoth is god tier but I wouldn't recommend it to Shining Force fans. There are some minimal RPG elements like unit traits and they can level up a couple times but Wesnoth is more of a turn based tactics game than a TRPG.

The initial excuse/cover related to SEGA wanting to promote Shining Ark's debut trailer on YouTube became less and less true over time. Let's face it, no Japanese Shining fan's going to start with YouTube when they're always using Nico Nico Douga for trailers and videos. Also every character in the game is viable, so use who you like. Even if they seem pretty iffy they'll make up for it with better stats later. It's up to you to decide who's worth leveling up.

Could someone explain when the best time to promote in each shining force game is and why? Does waiting until level 20 even result in stronger characters, considering the EXP you end up losing? Even if promoting later eventually results in better units, does the lategame benefit outweigh the earlygame advantage? Does it depend on the character? etc.

I know that most people think it's better to promote at level 20 in Fire Emblem games but that's wrong, so don't answer if you think that.

As a kid I was convinced that Shell must be a secret character.

It's a meme of the worst type. Before promotionlevel up stats are awful. After promotion they are better. Now, if you wait until 20 they will be better in the long run ONLY if you intentionally grind forever to see the benefits. If you pplay the game normally (without repeating battles to grind) you're gimping yourself short term for barely any long term benefit (characters will only start to get good at the very end).

It's a powergaming strategy for those obsessed with long term gains, not something that's at all a good idea for a sensible regular playthrough. Promote as soon as possible for better stats in the short term, your characters will still easily be strong enough for the final battles this way, and mid game won't be suffering.

In SF1, the game increases your stat during the promotion depending on your current stats and "designed" stats for that level.
For example, your attack at level 10 must be 20. Your attack is 17 - so, probably, you'll get your attack increased by 2 or 3.
If your attack is 22, you'll probably get no increase or an increase by 1.
So, if you'll spend some time to level up your characters and then promote them, you'll get your characters at promoted level 1 with "overpowered" stats - that means you'll get almost no stats increasing at several next level ups.
TL;DR. Leveling up your characters in SF1 to 20lvl before promotion doesnt worth your efforts. Its counterproductive.

In SF2, you'll always receive "standard" increase for your character, for example, HP+1, AT+1, DF+2, AGI+1 for a Warrior or HP+2, AT+1, DF+2, AGI+1 for a Baron - that means you'll continue powering up your characters regradeless of their power level before promotion.
TL;DR - in SF2 you could level up your characters to lv.39 before promotion, it would give a signifficant effect on their strength.

It's not as critical to your short term success in 2, but you might as well promote as soon as you can (which is level 20 in that game) because powergaming is not needed at all. If you hold out till level 40 you will of course utterly break the game upon promotion turning it into a joke. Just remember not to promote certain characters without their special promition items!

Shining Force I and II play pretty much identically with 2 just being longer. The only real difference is the tone of the games.

Shining Force I has more of a feel like leading an army in a war, your force is the last hope of the kingdom and the only way you will be victorious is by fighting your way across continents to the enemies home.

Shining Force II has more of an anime adventure feel, your initial force is a bunch of young students and not an army, afterwards you are basically exploring places looking for stuff while slowly gaining allies and becoming stronger.

I'm playing on the hardest difficulty setting (the ACTUAL hardest difficulty setting) and its been rough.

That wouldn't be why I would think the game is inferior to Shining Force 1 however. I don't think I like the "open world" aspect of the game. Exploring was straight-forward and fun in the first game, but the second one is just HUUUUUGE sprawling maps that don't serve any real purpose. I would've preferred a mario 3-esque map where it's just a straight line to somewhere instead. Maybe this wouldn't have been so bad but they had to shove in random encounters too. I really don't like the random encounters. I enjoyed Shining Force 1 where every battle had a meaning. Shining Force 2 has these random encounters take place on said HUGE sprawling maps and it's just so boring and dull with no strategy. It takes up your time and is pointless if all your characters have been leveled appropriately.

unlocking is really shit, sometimes you just get cards but most of the time you need to kill a specific enemy usually the boss in a battle with a specific character to unlock cards. To unlock your allies cards you need to bring them into combat and then talk to them afterwards until they give you a card, they will give you a little bit of story for doing this and it's likely the only completely positive addition but since there is a limited amount of battles you ain't getting every bodies cards in a single play through.

Paraphrasing from this guide: https://www.gamefaqs.com/gba/918893-shining-force-resurrection-of-the-dark-dragon/faqs/30142

There are two types of cards, Hero and Villain.
Villain cards are earned for doing certain things during battle, like using Max to get the final hit on the rune-knight in the first battle.

Hero cards can be found in the free-roaming section of the game. Some can for example be found inbookshelves, or be given as friendship rewards.

There is a character that can equip and use up to four cards in battle, to buff allies, cast powerful spells or even imitate members of the Force.

Read the link for more info.

The setting is classic, the dialogue and characters are more fleshed out than 99% of the console RPGs of the time, backtracking was minimal for a dungeon crawler, and there's no required grinding since you get all the levels you need to progress during normal exploration.

More importantly, the art and music are amazing, a lot of the tedium that plagues the genre is minimized, the floor layouts are interesting, and the battles are really well balanced.

What a constructive reply.

None of the characters get hashed out, not in any degree. You occasionally go back to the tavern and witness maybe two cutscenes that involve Pyra or Milo. The characters are otherwise every bit as generic as the blank slate, self-insert hero.

Not a single eventful thing happens during the course of the game. You explore the dungeon, find a key, advance to the next level, rinse and repeat until you find and defeat Darksol, then the generic kingdom is saved. Game over.

Does this game get better? I can't get into it even though on paper it seems like my bread and butter.

A lot of these early chapters seem to take forever with moving everyone long distances.

Meeting Melvyl at the tavern is not eventful?

The game is light on cutscenes, but what little plot is there, while generic, is interesting and well animated.

I think sissy archers should have more range and ninja should have higher evasion chanse.
Imagine how dangerous could be an archer with range 4 or 5! Especially somewhere in the sands or woods

Does anyone have the samples of the PCM snares used in Shining Force 1?

I'm trying to rip them but I'm not very good at figuring out how.

If you want something done, you do it yourself!

Luckily, most, if not all of the drum samples are isolated without music in the Headquarters theme, so it allowed for easy ripping in Audacity.

It's probably not perfect, and it feels like there are minute, if not no differences between a few of the samples (hence the naming of snare1 and snare1b, for example), but it will get the job done in your tracker of choice. I also sampled the snare roll, though I am certain that that was not an actual sample but just the individual drums played in quick succession.

dude, you don't just get a new cable for it
its a fucking EXPENSIVE cable and you can't just use a genesis 2 cable without burning out the system.
