Don't listen to this guy. As fantastic as DQIII is, it's not where I'd start someone new to RPGs. You would end up lost quite frequently.

I would recommend any of the following: Chrono Trigger, any of the Mario RPG/Paper Mario/Mario & Luigi games, any mainline Pokémon game, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy X

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest on the SNES might be the easiest RPG out there, but it's so basic it might bore you away from the genre.

What does watching anime have to do with RPGs? Unless you're a huge Lodoss fan or something. Anyways, I recommend the Lunar games. Straight forward, anime inspired and easy enough that they don't require grinding and in depth strategy but complex enough to not be just attacking over and over the whole time.

Sega CD versions are preferable but PS is decent.

Otherwise Pokemon is a good bet. I recommend Gold/Silver.

I consider the Lunars as some of the few RPGs with near perfect difficulty. Which is that by fully exploring each area but not actually stopping to grind your party will be just strong enough that the upcoming boss is challenging but beatable.

A lot of great suggestions, surprised nobody suggested Earthbound yet.

The story is light for the most part, and a lot of fun. Gameplay wise very accessible and not a remarkable amount of depth, but still fun. The main issue with this game is getting a hold of the cart, because the prices are ridiculous. I'm sure without the box though you could catch on at a decent price.

Lufia might also be a good beginner's title.

I think it's great! Yeah, it does get a lot of shit. It kinda became an overrated hipster cult classic over time. A lot of that crowd started calling Earthbound the best RPG ever made, and it definitely does not merit that title by a long shot. Earthbound was my absolute favorite until I started playing SMT too. There's definitely better RPG's out there even in the same vein as Earthbound, but it is still definitely special with that unique charm.

I don't think you should play Earthbound, it's not jrpg-casual friendly. It's more easily appreciated by people who are already deep into JRPGs.
But that doesn't mean you CAN'T appreciate it, maybe you'll even love it, just saying that it's not as casual friendly as something like Chrono Trigger, which i deeply recommend for beginners into retro JRPGs.

It's fun, the story is interesting and keeps you immersed, it has nice colors, scenarios, a pretty unique combat system, AMAZING music and very captivating characters.
It is unarguably one of the 5 best JRPGs ever, arguably the greatest of all time. A definitive MUST PLAY for enthusiasts of retro games and JRPGs.

I'd recommend the Breath of Fire III and IV as well, amazing games by CAPCOM.
I love the whole series, but I and II aren't very good, CAPCOM was still learning how to make JRPGs and these games didn't turn out as good, the combat system is too crude, going through dungeons feels like a chore and there are some bugs, coupled with terrible localization makes me only recommend these games to people who REALLY fucking like JRPGs, like me. I think you can skip them and still understand the story if you play III and IV.

Have fun OP and good luck.

Something like this is good to start with. Or something straightforward like game boy final fantasy, mystic quest, etc...

Easy, straightforward story, not too many items to get you off track how to develope your hero and maybe a team which has different roles for the party.

>>3831446
Some of these could be overwhelming for a starter

I'd even go so far to wait with chrono trigger until you played something else before, so you can appreciate how good it is

Suikoden is like the motherload of party development, so many chars to choose from

>>3831464
Same goes with Earthbound, I find it's alot better to have played an RPG that 'follows the rules' to see how these games differ from the formula.

Special mentions for things like Secret of Mana/ Secret of Evermore, Breath of fire, Grandia, Final Fantasy/FF Tactics, Lufia, Terranigma, Vandal Hearts etc...
