The only ones worth playing are 1, 2 (X) and 3.

1 if you want the "classic" pseudo-Vietnam/WW2 stuff without much zaniness.

2/X if you want a little crazy, but still want it to be kind of rooted in reality.
3 if you want the absolutely off the rails stuff.

>The only ones worth playing are 1, 2 (X) and 3.

2 is not worth playing because you have X. There's nothing that 2 has that X doesn't have better.

1 and 3 are solid. 3 is a bit too long, partly because of the epic final mission.

4 is decent, just a step back from X and 3. It's much closer to the original game, which makes it look dated, you go back to fighting normal soldiers and tanks after the giant enemy crabs and Independence Day ufo invasion of MS3.

>wah wah 4 reused graphics
who gives a fuck.

5 has an extremely good first level (bet you never found the hidden miniboss), then it turns into a boring shitfest in the middle of mission 2.

4 and 5 have totally baller soundtracks.

There's also the GBA game, I recall it being fun, for a GBA game.

What about Metal Slug 6 and XX?
Personally, I REALLY like Metal Slug 6, even if the characters and scenery are kinda clashing in artstyle... It's just my opinion, but I would put it right after Metal Slug 3 as best MS game.

I give a fuck because seeing MS1 sprites running alongside MS2 sprites is lazy/jarring as fuck and nearly all the bosses are just mirrored pieces of vehicles slapped together so there's nothing original besides a baby face that gets blown off after a few seconds and Amadeus' boring as fuck to fight wall suits

3. It's got some dumb shit (like the final mission being obnoxiously long), but it's pretty much the best overall.

this is pretty spot-on, but I will say that 6 should probably be low tier. It's fun in its own weird way.

I could also entertain an argument to rank 3 lower (maybe borderline shit tier, honestly). it's just excessively hard for no good reason and the whole zombie mechanics and enemies are beyond infuriating

Is X much harder than two? I've been able to 1CC number 1 on default difficulty (4), but I can't progress nearly as far in X. I've actually yet to even try 2; would 2 maybe be a better difficulty progression from 1 than X?

I'm surprised people in this thread are shitting on MS3. It's usually agreed upon as the best game in the series. Personally I like X the most, followed by 1 then 3. The rest are bland in comparison.

>I'm surprised people in this thread are shitting on MS3. It's usually agreed upon as the best game in the series.

That's because the amount of crazy wacky stuff in it means credit feeding babbies love it. Unfortunately if you actually play it legit and try and 1CC it's often a funless slog. Look at high level plays of the last level, large tracts are just a guy slowly inching from left to right hammering the fire button until the screen is cleared.

1 and X are way more fun to actually play. 4 onwards are literally just fan games.

MS3 is the Sonic CD of the Metal Slug series. It's loved by people who love to pretend because it was SNK's true last game and it's EEEEEEPEEEC & KUREISHI. But it's a fucking drag to play.

X is the true patrician choice

I really like Metal Slug 5. In my opinion it has a fair challenge, a well balanced difficulty curve (unlike MS3) and awesome soundtrack.
I mean, i love MS from 1 to 5 and for each one there is a particular characteristic that makes one stand out from the others.
I didn' t play 6 and 7 too much, i don't really like the introduction of character's ability and the new graphical style of those games

As a result of the bankruptcy, 4 was kind of just shat out. It feels like a crappy romhack thanks to all the recycled content, the lack of polish, boring level design, and how buggy it is.

Of interest to some, a new 2-player TAS record for Metal Slug 3 was finished very recently with a new completion time of 24:27.8 or an improvement of 2:41.75 (9705 frames) over the old run:
http://tasvideos.org/5392S.html
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02GG2_glnws
^Not the final encode (FBA-rr is awful at synching/dumping video which is why it's taking so long to formally publish) so don't complain about the garbage filtering

It's actually a rather insane update considering the optimization of the older version.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-21-EgF9foM
^Comparison video

It was found via testing that alternating crouch directions between shooting increases the pistol's rate of fire (and thus DPS) and also by abusing the frame timing of the Laser Gun's shot damage duration, it's effective ammunition is increased. One of the largest time-saves found was a glitch where if you destroy a truck in conjunction with Allen being on-screen in the final mission his life is reduced to nothing and dies immediately from a single pistol bullet.
