So, I want to play Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, and Corridor 7. That's the short version.

Long version is... I've been out of the loop when it comes to playing old great games in new hardware. What do?

1) Doom: I remember there was a thing called ZDoom that was the most user-friendly fucking thing in existance. Small window opened up, had a menu with WADs. Select WAD, boom, done. However, it was apparently replaced by something else?

2) Duke Nukem 3D. I know there's an steam version, so here's where it gets tricky. I still have my old ass 1.4v CD (before Atomic. I used to have the Plutonium Pak, but that CD is long lost) still around. So, should I just ignore the CD, go fuckall and buy it again... or can I still use my awesome CD?

3) Corridor 7: Fuck me, that diskette is the longest goner ever. Never played the CD vesion. I think the files are floating around, but... well, what do? DosBox? Can anyone point me to a good tutorial? Are the newer dosbox version more stable?

>> No.3807143

You could even play these on a raspberry pi. Just duke would not work all that great with a gamepad. Or on a hacked wii.

Don't know what distros would make this easy though if it was desired.

>> No.3807163

Skip Corridor 7, play Blake Stone: Planetstrike and Rise of the Triad instead. C7 is basically just an inferior version of Blake Stone and Rise of the Triad is the best out of all the Wolf3D-like shooters.

>> No.3807302

>>3807163

Perhaps, but I have nostalgia for Corridor 7, unlike Rise of the Triad (although the shareware is in my Duke 3D CD).

That still doesn't tell me what I need to download to play this games, tho'. Specially Doom, which should be the easiest and smallest of the bunch. And all them idTech 1 games, of course.

>> No.3807479

I'll ask a simple question:

What do I need to download to play Doom (besides the WADs, that is)

>> No.3807573

>>3807479
GZDoom. You can get it here:
http://gzdoom.drdteam.org/page.php?page=download

If you don't want to constantly drag and drop your wads into the exe, you can use a launcher like ZDL which you can get here:
https://github.com/qbasicer/qzdl/releases

>> No.3808093

>>3807573
Fucking perfect. Thanks, anon!

Second simple question:
Do I play Duke Nukem 3D out of my old CD or do I get it in Steam?

>>3807143
Duke works fine on the gamepad

Would my CD copy of Duke 3D run with EDuke 32? I mean, I genuinely have no idea what I'm doing...

>there was a thing called ZDoom
>However, it was apparently replaced by something else?
Not really. ZDoom is still a thing. GZDoom is a bit more popular because it was ZDoom in OpenGL (but I think ZDoom has a GL renderer now?). Either one is a very good choice for playing Doom mods, but does not give you a very authentic experience, even if you turn jumping and mouselook off. Chocolate Doom is a better choice for just playing plain old Doom on a modern system.

>Duke3D
If you can find ye olde DOS patch to upgrade 1.4 to Atomic, you could do that... easiest thing to do is just find the Atomic Edition for download somewhere, though. I'd recommend playing in Dosbox, though there is a Zdoom-style 'port' called Eduke32 you could use, too. Definately ignore the Steam version.

>Corridor 7
No... you're better off without it.
But I imagine it would run in Dosbox. Never tried. I don't hate myself.

>Can anyone point me to a good tutorial?
For Dosbox? Try Googling it if you need specific instructions, but the basic command you'll need is
>mount c c:\wherever\you\keep\your\dos\games
From there on, it's basic DOS commands, easy peasy lemon squeezy..

>> No.3808926

>>3808305
M8, I have taken pity upon your situation.
I'm just gonna upload my Duke3d directory for you in a rar file. It has Eduke32 in it, should be extract, click & play and is the full Atomic Edition. It will also work in Dosbox, if you wish to go that route. Here it is:

There's a couple, try looking up ECWolf or Wolf4SDL. Should work with Wolf3D and Spear of Destiny at least, maybe with the SOD mission pack sequels too?

As for most other games, Dosbox all the way.

Oh, goodie. So in addition to many wolf3d engine games and all normal doom engine games, that adds that and probably shadow warrior to the list of games that can huddle in on an emulation box, limits of porting progress aside. Though control as well as source reasons presumably make blood inconceivable as such.

Blake stone? What felt much more like a nicer version of Corridor 7 was Terminator Rampage.

>> No.3809149

Planet Strike, specifically. I agree that Blake Stone 1 was nothing special. The sequel was a huge improvement over it in basically every way, making it something special imo.

>> No.3809202

So, Corridor 7 runs fine in DosBox... but it requires constant cycle raising and the mounting takes a bit. Something I can do to streamline the process?

>> No.3809382

You can streamline loading Corridor 7 by creating a dosbox configuration file. Adjust any game specific settings such as cycles, sound, window resolution, etc. Just be sure to add this:

[autoexec]
@echo off
mount c "C:\GAMES\Corridor 7"
imgmount d "C:\GAMES\Corridor 7\corridor7.cue" -t iso
c:
CORR7CD
cls
exit

Replace "C:\GAMES\Corridor 7" with the game's directory. From now on, just load the configuration file and you should be fine.

>> No.3810124

>>3809382

I got the floppy version. I'm guessing the imgmount command is not needed?

Also, where do I set the cycles in the config file?

>> No.3810247

Crap, something didn't work.

I right-clicked the conf file and selected to open it with DosBox. For some reason it gave me an error after I did and the game didn't run nor the cycles were set. It was mounted, tho'.

>> No.3810389

>>3810124
Correct. imgmount is only needed for the CD version. If you are using the floppy version then it should look like this instead:

[autoexec]
@echo off
mount c "C:\GAMES\Corridor 7"
c:
CORR7
cls
exit

>> No.3810412

>>3810247
You cannot use the configuration file this way. The easiest way to use it is to setup a new desktop shortcut. First, make a new dosbox shortcut and go into properties. Add this to target:

-conf "C:\GAMES\Corridor 7\dosbox_corr7.conf" -noconsole

In this case, change "C:\GAMES\Corridor 7\dosbox_coor7.config" to the location of the configuration file (include the filename) you want to use. Now you should be able to use the shortcut to start the game.

Ooooh, super nice. Will do, anon. Thanks!

>> No.3810424

>>3810247
Shit! I forgot to address the cycles... Just look for the [cpu] section in the configuration. Mine looks like this:

[cpu]
core=auto
cycles=12000
cycleup=10
cycledown=10

You may want to adjust cycles to your preference.

>> No.3810773

>>3810412
I don't understand why anyone would do all this per-game config file nonsense. The dude played the games back in the day, he knows how to use DOS. All he needs to learn is the mount command, maybe stick an automount in the main Dosbox config then it's straight back to the old days.

>cd\game
>game

Two commands to play game! So easy.

>> No.3810810

>>3810773

Well, I wouldn't mind having to type "run". It's mostly the cycles thing that I find very annoying.

>> No.3810869

>>3810773
Too bad running this on a real DOS machine may not be an immediate option.

The reason you should setup a config is to save time. This is great if you intend to re-visit any game multiple times, but do NOT want the hassle of setting up dosbox for the tenth time.

I don't know about you, but I think the setup is worth it if you intend to play this through multiple sessions. Otherwise, just stick with using the commands.

>> No.3811343

Question about that EDuke file. Everything works perfectly fine, and I'm very thankful to that anon who delivered out of nowhere.

But... is there a way I can play with the shitty-yet-nostalgic Sound Blaster music? Man, I miss those shitty synths.

http://www.old-games.com/download/1963/corridor-7-alien-invasion

Download the 'Easy Setup' package. This is self contained with DOSBox, preconfigured and ready to run.

>> No.3812051

>>3809382
Personally I like just automounting my dosbox's C directory as a folder with all my crap in it and loading in like normal dos and mounting any ISO's by right clicking in windows shell to a virtual drive that's premounted in DOS and can be ctrl+f4 refreshed whenever I need. My DOSbox config also mounts the actual CD drive as well if I have CDs for it.
So that way I just need to make sure the corridor7 CD is in, start dosbox type { CD cor[tab autocomplete] return cor[tab autocomplete]} and I'm off.
If I wanted to mount a specific file like that I'd just drop in a bat file with that mount command in the game directory to do that, possibly to start the game executable too.

Corridor 7 ... ahh, that came with quite a neat gamepad.

I can hardly expect my memory about such a thing to be rock solid, but it sure seems like the D-pad was seriously better implemented than on a gravis.

They patched World Tour a while back. All the main issues were fixed (being able to turn off auto aim, mouse movement, true widescreen, even sound quality iirc) and World Tour is still the only way to fully play the latest episode of the game, which maps range from OK to GREAT.

Yes, I'd still be using EDuke32 if I wanted to play any episode of the game other than Alien World Order, but they really listened to complains with World Tour and fixed their own shit.

What the hell are you talking about? It DOES have have the FMVs and CD AUDIO!

I'll just assume you mounted the cue/bin img pair correctly and FULLY installed the game.

You did know you have to select the CD audio in the setup program, right? Even if you did, you have to manually start the music in the Adjust Audio menu to get the CD audio. The audio menu should look like this picture.

Protip: Use the Spacebar or Ctrl, NOT the Enter key when you select play.

I think I found the source of the problem! A whole bunch of files delete themselves after starting the game for the first time. I forgot how big of a pain in the ass DOS games can be...

Anyways, I'll just leave a link for anyone who still wants a working copy of the CD version.
