This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Shadowmask. Better than aperature grille? You tell me.

I hyped up new pics for weeks a while back, when I was excited to try out the camera on my new phone. I'm an idiot and never actually delivered anything. Will take more pics tomorrow after I clean the cum off the front.

The Hanzo has a switch to go back and forth between the Dreamcast's RGB mode(15khz) and VGA mode(31khz).

Assuming you have a PVM or some other CRT that takes RGB over BNC, a simple VGA to BNC cable should be all you need. Not sure how the Hanzo handles sync, and as to whether it'll be throwing CSync over the Horizontal line or if it'll actually separate it and require that you recombine the two.

That doesn't make it not a shadowmask, just a variant.

Honestly, if you are into retro games these prices are not terrible. Especially if you can pay a relatively small delivery fee because some of those TVs are heavy and awkward.

$92.95 silver TV that is on the floor is a Trinitron 36fs120. I'd pay almost $200 for that tv in good shape delivered to my house.

$75.95 silver the 2nd TV on the middle row is Trinitron 27fs120. It is a bit over priced. I'd pay $50-60 for the TV itself. $75 delivered.

Both are TVs w/ component input. Pretty good quality consumer sets. Pretty easily findable on craigslist for free or cheap.

The 27 incher I bought on craigslist for $25 bucks about 6 years ago.

The 36 incher I got on craigslist for free, but paid $100 to have movers pick it up and help me move it into my basement.

The problem is THEY ARE HEAVY. I own both of them. I am 6'2, 195ish, former college shotputter. The 27incher I handle on my own- its doable but not fun.

The 36 incher requires 2 people minimum. I don't care how strong you are you NEED two people. It is oddly shaped has no handles on it and weighs 225lbs.

I would LOVE to open a consumer TV CRT shop like this.

The point of consumer CRTs is getting them easily and in large sizes. There are only a handful of pro CRTs that are 24inches or bigger, and they are either impossible to find are retarded expensive.

Big CRTs are a hassle, if you want to avoid the hassle then you pay for it or deal with it.

not everybody seeks behemoths. Before I found monitors, I went through 2 29"s and they were a tad too big. Then I found a 25" that was the perfect trade-off.

>YFW you have a 25inch PVM collecting dust because you have no real use for it, but know its value.

I've got a local PVM collector guy, when I have the free time I'd love to package my 2530 & 14M2U for a 14L5.

I just left my 20M4U at my childhood home over the holidays. Next time I go back I'll hook it up so I have scanline action there.

If I had a vacation/beach house. I'd probably leave the 2530 there

Hey ya'll. I thought I'd post this in case anyone else had this problem.

So i wanted to test the lag on my 50inch LED for shits and gigs. I was planning on using the 240p test suite on my wii. The problem I kept encountering was that everytime I would boot up the suite my screen would go black and nothing would happen.

It struck me that in all likelihood my LED could not do 240p, I felt at a loss. Then I remembered that the test suite had an option for 480i. I plugged the wii back into my CRT switched the test suite to 480i, unplugged my component cables and plugged in my wii2hdmi. Voila! 240p test suite on my non 240p capable LED.

Tested the lag and was pleasantly surprised. Tried the lag test a few times and got 1 3frame lag but the majority was around 2-2.8 frames of lag. Here's a pic of my lowest.

>inb4 you tried it so many times that you got adjusted to the lag and scored lower results.
Immediately after this I did the test with my CRT and got a .6 average frames of lag.

>> No.3795532

That test is worthless due to acclimatising yourself to any lag present.

Do the true lag test with an LCD and CRT daisy-chained together.

I bought this TV in 2005 or 2006 after our 11 yr old hand-me-down ProScan stopped working one day. This TV had pretty good picture, decent sound, it's frikken huge but it's a 32" CRT so what do you expect. Ever since the first day we brought it home, it would make the loudest **bzzzoowwwn** sound when you turned it on and make all of the lights in the house dim for a sec. Other than that, it was perfect. Until... It started having the 9 blink problem within the past week or so. Periodically, it will just not turn on and the standby light blinks 9 times... and bummer for you, no TV. Now I learn via online searches that I have to replace the G Board for $60 to $100 (and that's if I do it myself) if I want my tv to work again.

shadowmask, especially high end stuff like ikegami htm's and TMs > just about anything sony ever made. The picture is more rounded, organic, and the picture has a blending quality to it due to the arrangements of the dots. Aperture grilles are cleaner, sharper, more clinical even - there's a crucial element here for details sake, but the actual image being so clean and clear may not be what you're looking for. For this reason they are great RGB monitors for identifying and arranging details, but RGB on a shadowmask is radiant.

My friend says old games look like shit. I'm going to prove him wrong by hooking up a Genesis with Retrovision HD cables and a 7th or 8th gen console with RF to a calibrated Trinitron 36".
The modern system will have its audio connected to a pair of shit computer speakers with holes stabbed in their cones hidden behind the expensive hip height audiophile speakers used for the Genesis.
I will spill some soda on the modern controller to make the D-pad and buttons sticky.

Slot mask seems like a cheap compromise. A little brighter than dot masks but showing the same "screen door" effect as aperture grilles. And still less sharp than both.

My guess is that it was designed around interlaced video, the jagged phosphor layout might help blend the alternating scan lines together. Case in point: you won't find any progressive-scan (vga) monitors with slot masks. They simply don't exist.

HAHAHA no.

It is 150lbs. Go on and google it. 150 is managable. Like you said its not fun but you can do it and you are a big guy. Not everyone is that big, or has the time to go through that much annoying effort.

If you had that much trouble with your 32 incher, try moving that 32 incher with a 24 incher on top of it...that is what it would take to move the 36 inch.

I like PlayStation on my PVM-2950 and KX-27PS1 Profeel.

They're both around 500 lines so you get nice defined scanlines but not crazy enough to give you a headache like with a BVM or similar. Works nicely for early 3D stuff. I hook them up with RGB but I guess that's not an option with immodest N64. The PVM also has S-Video but the Profeel is composhite or RGB only.

~500 lines on a 25-30" set fed a crisp RGB input gives this really nice 'grid' structure to the image which is hard to describe, you just have to see it.

Some or all have issues, but I'm capable of repairing these things (and I have spare parts), so that's no big deal. Now shipping is going to be a huge pita, probably a couple hundred, but the original cost of all the monitors combined is about $35.

I'm going to fill my storage unit and then take a picture. If anyone in the North Florida area wants a PVM for a fair price, hit me up. Anything 5/8" with 250 or less TVL will be below $50. The 13/14" monitors I'll price later.

I bought this p220f (black) new in the plastic for $30

It was wonderful while it worked, but sadly it broke after around 4 months of enjoying it

How do I diagnose the problem?

Every time I turned it on (while it worked) it would make a very slight crackling noise but I had no problems.

Then one day when I turned it on, the picture was very faded and then I was left with a black screen.

Thank you for your time, I really appreciate it

I got this off somebody right when they were putting it on the curb about 6 years ago, and to my memory the picture was set just fine on it. The problem is that it's been sitting in storage for the past couple years because I didn't have space for it, it's only recently that I dug it out again but it was cracked along the side where the black electrical tape is covering. I have no idea what happened to it, maybe another family member dumped something heavy on top of it or it got attacked by giant rats, it was in a public storage unit. Now the picture is all fucked up on that side so it's all wavy and shit, and the AV port on the bezel's right side has a broken audio port.

I've got GTX 970 as my graphics card and while I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon, it seems like the 900 series and the equivalent radeon series (R9 200 series I think) are the last graphics cards to have DVI-I ports, which support analog output and allow you to use VGA monitors with them with simple, no frills passive converters. Newer cards only have DVI-D, HDMI, and displayport, all of which require digital to analog converters that have resolution limitations - I doubt I'll be able to use my FW900 at 2304x1440p 80hz with a converter that is advertised as doing 1080p 60hz. Hey guys, I have a 32" Sony Trinitron and I have a lot of my /vr/ hardware hooked up to it, but I want to be able to emulate the systems I don't have on that TV as well. Is there a recommended card to do this? The TV has RCA and S-Video. It also has what I believe to be composite? (red blue green ports on the back that I'm not terribly familiar with). At any rate, yeah. That's the goal here. What's my best bet on accomplishing it?

>> No.3799715

Red Blue Green ports are Component video on most US sets. You can get RGB quality from PS1/2, Wii, XBOX, GCN (with an expensive cable) with those ports. You can likely get a VGA to Component adapter if you're trying to emulate with a PC; otherwise I would recommend a hacked Wii if it handles the systems you don't happen to have on hand.

No (decent) CRTs on my craigslist so I have to settle for the next best thing.

Some older, smaller plasma TVs are deceptive.

They are widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio but they are not 1024X720, they are actually 852X480.

If I set one to 4:3 aspect ration will it be good for classic games?
I mean 480 vertical is the same as CRT TVs so there shouldn't be much scaling to do.

I also see some newer plasmas that claim to be 720p/1080i.

I'm new to video monitors so I don't know shit about the minute differences between models and that pastebin in the OP only gave me a general idea.
I saw these two panasonic monitors on ebay that have about $50 in price difference but I'm not sure which one is better for my needs. the cheaper one is model BT-H1350Y and the more expensive one is BT-H1390YN, and even though both support S-Video and Component RGB like I'm looking for I don't know if the 1350Y is an alright pick considering that I can't find any images of it playing games online. The seller is shipping it in a flight case though so at least I know it's gonna be safe in transit.
The thing is that I've seen the more expensive one in action, my post's image is from somebody using it for various games and systems, so I know that one is a great option and that it displays games really nicely. I'm just not sure whether it's worth the extra cost for me though.
I don't want to drop the cash on either of these only to then regret not choosing the other monitor instead. Is there anywhere good I could read up on their differences or does anybody here have good experiences with these models?

Do you know specifically which 14-17R you have? Like, Ikegami's site is just a bit of a mess in regards to it, being that it has 3 or so different monitors all referencing one page, and not all of them seem to have the same listed TVL. Specifically the RZ seems to suggest 600TVL vs the 500 of the earlier model(s).

Yes, Ikegami gets too little credit for monitor production. They are extremely easy to maintain, the picture is amazing - easily the best shadowmasks ever made, the only problem is they are kinda light on features. 480p ikegami crt's are very expensive and uncommon, especially if you want y/pb/pr 480p+. The more common HTM-2050Rs which do 720p and 1080i do not do 480p out of the box, and the option board which enables it is incredibly rare.

I've looked into some commentary by film studio/camera/recording/production/editing guys, and they almost all preferred Ikegami's equipment, especially the monitors over Sony's BVM/PVM line - which seems to be more popular with television/broadcast studios and image editing types. Sony's are more common overall, but for the highest of the high end - Ikegami seemed to be as or more popular.

Unless your TV is actually a PC monitor or shit, a scan convertor isn't going to do shit.

Assuming it's just a regular SD CRT, you can just transcode the RGB into Component and be done with it.

>>3804736
VGA is RGB(HV). The issue is the PC monitor will not sync to signals below 31khz(480p), meaning you'd have to scale(or linedouble) most retro stuff to use it on it.

About $35 total. This is only the electrolytic caps, not the film caps or anything else on the boards. I'm mostly confident the film caps on my board are good, but I'll probably desolder them and test their capacitance anyhow just to be sure. Film caps are a pain to find matches for.

hi /crt/, I wanted to pick up a broadcast monitor and hook it up to a laptop to have it run a continuous stream of movies, anime, etc. I was thinking a JVC TM (R9U, 910SU, 910U/A, A101G) or Sony PVM (8041Q, 9-L2), all 8". they look cool, got a lot of knobs, are available on ebay and within my price range. was thinking 13" but not really finding any on ebay

So I have some questions. how hard it would be to convert the output from the thinkpad's standard 15 pin VGA to the monitors? would subs display legibly on an 800x600 screen? is 8" too small for normal use? and is there anything I should know about the different models I listed? The resolution mismatch, primarily. You can buy cheapo converters to get Composite/S-Video from standard VGA, but it will look like complete horseshit.

VGA is already RGB, but even the lowest resolution it has will be too much for just about all PVMs/BVMs, much less small ones like the 804* series and various JVC/Panny options. Being from a laptop, and specifically a thinkpad(depending on the model) could make things even more difficult, more so if you're in a Windows environment.

You honestly would be better off finding a cheapo 14-16'' PC CRT and using that instead. Not only will it be several magnitudes cheaper in all likelihood, they're much more common and much easier to setup for your specific needs.

>only joining band wagon to be hipsters
Fuck no, I'm getting into CRTs because old consoles look like shit on HDTVs and I don't have $300 to blow on a framemeister.

I tried a PVM because I found one for a reasonable price and every consumer set I've ever owned had some kind of terrible issue with it.

I don't mind having to learn a few things and do some calibration. You know what I do mind, though?

The fact that resources aren't quite easily accessible. Almost every time I've turned to google for a problem, I've gotten no fucking help. I hate that I can't seem to find a single service shop in my area even touches consumer CRTs, let alone PVMs. I hate how fussy SCART cables are. I hate how I've constantly fiddled with the settings, trying to get the picture to look right in motion, only to find that the bottom right corner is slightly stretched out for some goddamn reason that I probably can't fix on my own.

I'm not some hipster and I'm not trying to ruin your thread or your hobby. I'm just a picky faggot who loves old video games and doesn't want his to look like shit. I can't go back to the laggy, squiggly mess that is old vidya on HDTVs, and I don't think I can go back to composite, either.

From what I have heard the "1080i" TVs actually only have 720p worth of pixels in their screens. When they receive 1080 content they downscale it to 720p, or if it is a cheap TV they discard half the image of 1080P and for 1080i they fill the whole screen with 1 field (half image) at a time (no interlacing like CRT TVs).

1080i content is commonly output by digital television provider to save bandwidth (sports channels use 720p for better motion clarity).
I am not aware of any game consoles that output native 1080i (not counting downrezzing their native 1080p to work with legacy TV sets).

Like >>3810417 says, it's actually relatively easy. You can use a solder pump (cheap, works well), a desoldering gun (not cheap, works really well) or desoldering braid (really cheap, doesn't work perfectly). Just be careful to keep from exposing the PPU to too much heat for too long. Only enough to liquify the solder and remove it, no more.

The problem with desoldering the NES PPU in particular ( or most chips on NES carts) is that it is soldered on plated trough-holes and has solder on both sides of the board. If you have a nice desoldering gun it is easy but with only braid and pump there's a significant risk of lifting traces.

>> No.3810526

If I remember correctly, the legs on the NES PPU are fat fuckers. I've seen folks install sockets and it looks pretty doable if you're decent at soldering and don't go nuts.

>>3810442
Depends on who's buying. A smart guy with the skills to bring it back to life might pay like $20 max for a actually busted PVM. I'm probably going to pick up a big old 20 inch Sony HTM for free because the power supply is "shot" which is code for "it don't turn on no more and I ain't got no idear why."

The problem is not whether the legs are fat or thin. The problem is that there's solder on both sides and you can't easily remove it with just braid and sucker. Furthermore, you can't easily see when you have desoldered a leg because there could still be solder behind the leg or inside the hole.
It is doable but the risk of lifting traces is significant.

It's better than YPbPr from PS2. That console doesn't have the best component output.

Whether it's better than PS2 RGB? I'd have to do a comparison to be sure but I doubt there's much difference tbqh. Why not pick up the cables first and see how you like it before adding another machine into the mix. At least with PS2 you get the option of faster loading and texture smoothing (if you're into that kinda thing).

I've done a couple of NESRGB and Hi-Def installs myself so yeah I know it isn't too hard if you have experience.
But going ahead and telling someone who hasn't done it before to "not be a pussy" and "it's easy" is BS and they'll most likely fuck it up if they try it with just braid or a simple solder sucker.
If you want to desolder the PPU/CPU and don't have a lot of tools at hand I'd suggest doing this:
Get a soldering iron and a simple hand solder sucker. Suck the solder from all the pins. It doesn't need to be perfect and you most likely won't be able to get it perfect with just those two tools.
Next apply hot air to the back of the board onto the chip pins and get your ic puller onto the chip. The air will quickly melt the remains of the solder in the holes and the chip will smoothly lift out without any dangers of pulling a trace or heating the chip up too much.

I bought a PVM 14L4 a couple of weeks ago and I've had some problems with it. Sometimes the picture would gradually get darker until the screen would go completely blank. The webm shows me turning it on immediately after this had happened, basically the same thing but a lot faster. The past couple of days I haven't been able to get a picture out of it at all, no menu, no white sync text in the bottom right. I turned it on a few minutes ago with nothing plugged into it and got the sync text and menu but in red for about 30 seconds before it went blank again.

Any guidance would be great appreciated.

You can test caps with a multimeter sure but there's a few issues with doing that. Most multimeters can't test the cap's capacitance under proper load. You'll get a general idea if the thing is totally shot but edge cases might be missed. Second, you'll have to remove the caps from their circuit to test them properly, which is time consuming. It's often better to replace all caps if you're replacing one, which is why recap kits exist.

I'll be putting together kits for monitors on my store, when it opens.

Usually this.
I have a small and a bigger Trinitron which were both released in 1990 and they both have the same pitch of approx 0,5mm, although the bigger one has a greater deflection angle of 115° which causes greater geometry and convergence distortions compared to 90° tubes commonly used in all computer and professional monitors and as well as small consumer TVs.

It might be mentioned in the service manual, A smaller deflection angle means that the tube is way deeper.
>At what size do consumer TVs start having greater than 90 deflection angle, 24"? 27"? 32"?
Possibly 20".
>Are there other common angles than 90 and 115?
75° was used in 1950s sets and earlier. These tubes were huge.
Thomson once made a prototype tube with 140° angle. That tube with it's shallow neck was impossible to converge and the geometry was likely to be very very distorted.
Look at the bottom.
http://earlytelevision.org/color_crts.html

However, there's really are just 90° and 115° tubes and anything between is very rare.
>Is 115 the worst it gets for deflection angle?
Not that bad, just the scanlines at the bottom and top appear a bit bent.
The chassis always incorporate more advanced deflection circuits to correct the vertical linearity (like a pincushion option which might be absent or fixed for a small 90° tube TV).

Please respond
It seems like my Model 1 is one of these early models that can't just use csync from AV out (it is wired wrong, to pin 10 - csync input of CXA chip instead of pin 11, csync out). So in order to use csync I have to cut trace and add cap and resistor from pin 11 to AV out.
Of course I can try doing it, but I'd like to know in advance if sync change is going to help with this issue, or I should check something else.
Rolling also happens on bright screens, like 100 IRE in 240p test suite.
Other consoles I own work fine

PS3 doesn't support as many resolutions natively. The 360 is a champ mainly because it had a first party VGA cable, which is how I used my 360 in college. You could get 'weird' HD and sub HD resolutions on basically any display you had floating around, as well as 480p, 480i on a CRT. I used it via component on a SD Trinitron for awhile too, and XBLA games looked kickass on it.

The PS3, if you get a hackable one, has some pretty rad emulators and is easier to hack (if you can find an unpatched 1st gen model somehow), but overall the 360 is more flexible for displays with content purchased from XBLA. One interesting thing to note is both the 360 and PS3 support 1080p over component which, I believe, is technically an out-of-spec, unsupported mode, but it works nicely if you have some weird old HDTV without HDMI.

or i guess the dimensions of the MB-507 Mounting Rack

>> No.3816071

>>3816051
Do you need to know to the nearest mm?

They're designed to fit into a standard 19" rack so will be almost exactly 450mm to clear the rails.

What do drive and cut-off do in the service menu? Are they like white/black level for individual colors?

>> No.3816108

>>3816081
Brightness (aka black level) and contrast (white level) but for each individual colour channel.

>> No.3816114

>>3816108
So just to clarify, drive = brigthness and cut-off = contrast?

You shouldn't unless you're completely hamfisted. Even then it would be tricky.

Good info here:

It's referring to physical pots rather than digital controls but the principles are exactly the same.

If I wanted the most authentic late 80'd early 90's ntsc-u station. Is there any better option than a barrel tube xbr with matching stand and apm speakers?

pic unrelated

When I get set up in my new place my APM-22ES and PVM-2950QM combo will be unstoppable and very VERY black.

Just need to find a suitably Vaderish stand to tie it all together.

I already messed with it a couple months ago but I could never get it quite right. When I set the black level correctly (according to the 240p suite) the only color I can see at level 1 is green. I also can't distinguish most blues and reds from each other.

What do you guys do when your CRT kicks the bucket? Specifically with 30+inch CRT's.

I'm scared for when mine eventually dies, I'm hoping to get at least 10 years out of it ;_;

I would try to troubleshoot it. Some Sonys have beep codes you can look up. I'm not a handy but if it's something basic I could try to fix, but if it seemed out of my depth I'd just buy another one, I buy 1 or 2 every year anyway

>> No.3816935

Super shit. You can get pretty good CRT's at a goodwill for like 3-5 bucks if you're willing to be patient and do some hunting. At least where I live.
