Has any game since captured lovecraftian environments and creatures better than Quake did in 1996?

There are fucktons of games inspired by lovecraftian horror and the mythos. It depends largely on what you consider lovecraftian in the first place. Personally I consider it to be contemporary horror fantasy with emphasis on fragility and paranoia.

Should have spoilered that for not retro but I agree it does a good job of being lovecraftian. OP set a pretty narrow window with "since 1996" though. Eternal Darkness is another that would probably fit the bill but is from '02. Shadow Of The Comet is pretty intensely Lovecraftian then gets further away from it in Prisoner of Ice. Alone in the Dark games have definite influences. Nocturne nails the setting but is one of those games that makes you feel like it's going to "go there" with Lovecraft stuff but doesn't. So much of Steven King's stuff also leaves me disappointed that way but if we're talking video games, his themes don't really start making their way into gaming until way past the retro period.

You got a problem with me not pandering to your triggers, faggot? Are you still crying like a bitch because daddy stockpiled food and shot the dog for y2k and it turned out that nothing happened and he lost everything when the repro men showed up because he thought money would be worthless?

Don't tell me what to do, you dirty tripfag.

>What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills.

>I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words.

>You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands.

>Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue.

>But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it.

>You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

Use of the internet to threaten “the person of another” constitutes a violation of 18 U.S.C. § 875(interstate communication of threat to injure) If it is communicated interstate, federal jurisdiction is created.
Please see the statute at the following link:
http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/875.html

To constitute "a communication containing a threat" under Section 875(c), a communication must be such that a reasonable person (1) would take the statement as a serious expression of an intention to inflict bodily harm (the mens rea), and (2) would perceive such expression as being communicated to effect some change or achieve some goal through intimidation (the actus reus). A message is a "threat" if a reasonable recipient would tend to believe that the originator of the message was serious about his words and intended to effect the violence or other harm forewarned, regardless of the speaker's actual motive for issuing the communication.
Any person who willfully threatens to commit a crime which will result in death or great bodily injury to another person with the specific intent that the statement made verbally in writing or by means of an electronic communication device is to be taken as a threat even if there is no intent of actually carrying it out which on its face and under the circumstances in which it is made is so unequivocal unconditional immediate and specific as to convey to the person threatened a gravity of purpose and an immediate prospect of execution of the threat and thereby causes that person reasonably to be in sustained fear for his or her own safety or for his or her immediate family's safety.
It is not necessary for the victim to actually be placed in fear of imminent serious bodily injury or for the accused to have the capability or the intention to actually carry out the threat. The offense is completed if the accused, by his threat, sought as a desired reaction, to place a person in fear of imminent serious bodily injury.

lol how ironic. I just don't want to see the thread get pruned since I really like this topic. I even agreed with you about Dark Corners.

The path of public interest in Lovecraft is very interesting. By design (open sourcing/public domaining), I think he hoped that his visions would resonate through future sci-fi/fantasy literature and it did but then he got TOO popular and was dissected to death by SJWs so yeah we can just spiral this thread STRAIGHT into the trash if you want.

So shall we talk about Eternal Darkness then? Or maybe even Dark Shadows of the Earth?

Somebody might be able to convince me to go back to Dank Shadows I lost my motivation on the boat. I thought it would be a relief to FINALLY get a gun but it really wasn't. Everything just got shittier.

Ironically, Quake's introduction of "true" 3D environments subverted its antecesors' potential for portraying the eerie dimensional qualities of environments tied to Lovecraft's Mythos
