When you play retro games do you use your minds eye to fill in gaps in detail?

Yes, it is called an imagination - all kids used to have one :(

This.

People laugh when I tell them playing an old game is like reading a book: you have to use your imagination.

Kind of stupid to compare a deliberately realistic style with a deliberately cartoony style to try to make a point.

Detail/realism isn't necessary for an immersive experience or to connect to a character. 4chan of all places should demonstrate that, people want to legalize interdimensional marriage for their anime waifu.

I'll be frank—Cloud looks like Mila Jovovich in the remake, but I fucking HATE the chibi style of the old VII. IMO it looked completely out of place in the game, especially so when altered with more realistic battle/cutscene models. Not to mention all the dramatic effect is lost when every character looks like an SD plush toy.

>When you play retro games do you use your minds eye to fill in gaps in detail?
I don't.

I mean, you have a point there, but the remake's realistic style is going to clash so much worse with the game's comedic scenes since they're anime as fuck. And this game has a lot more comedy than a lot of people seem to remember.

I never had to "fill in the gaps" since I don't feel there's nothing to fill in. I did always wonder what was in the background in Sonic however.

I've found a lot of old games have gorgeous art that stands on its own, at least in some regard. Most of the time they look bad because they're on the wrong type of display, blown up to a resolution they weren't meant to be seen at and a lot of undesirable details, artifacts are created or shown off at this state. Most games are usually designed in such a way that the games look great in a purely artistic sense.

Agreed, but still most of the game obviously isn't comedy. And I guess they could still fit all of it in if they just add a slight bit of occasional anime or over-the-top facial expressions into it

photorealism and photorealistic graphics ruined video games and is the reason SquareSOFT went bankrupt in 2000. They have not learned their lesson. retro video games used to be fun and now they are about the highest polycount before they get downgraded and censored by sjws on console.

You're not supposed to fill in the gaps. Otherwise, you would be doing the work of the writer. Your imagination isn't canon anyway.

Sometimes depending on the game. The thing is though that I like old retro games look most of the times because it looks so different then what you see in the real world. So the worlds look so much more fun to watch and play through.

>> No.3795981

sometimes. I did as a child definitely. although with games like final fantasy 7 for example I really had no idea what was going on, like the sexual undertones and ideas about capitalism and corporate greed. now that I'm older it's different, plus all the characters have become memes and rendered in high res graphics...

>> No.3795998

Was FF7 originally going to be on the 3DO like Metal Gear Solid? Is that why the models are so low poly?

But that's exactly what it is, especially when you compare it to the more realistic designs/proportions of the original game's battle and FMV character models.

I'm not even a fan of FFVII, it's just an annoying false comparison.

Sort of, it's not like I see the things on screen as a mass of pixels and nothing more, but I do use my imagination to flesh out the games more when i'm not playing.
