Help me fill up and generally improve this chart, /vr/

What titles do I absolutely need to add (or take away)? What can I improve about the graphics or layout?
I definitely want to get better icons for the symbols signifying co-op games etc.

How does it look on your screen? Can you read everything ok? Is a two second video clip long enough?
One issue I'm running in to is that 4chan limits webms to 2048x2048, which is much smaller than recommendation infographics usually are. I have a little more room to work with and could potentially squeeze in some more cells, or I could just scale everything down a bit. Or maybe I should break the recommendations out into different categories and have a separate webm for shoot 'em ups, fighters, etc.

Anyway after this one is done I can use the same script to produce animated charts for other systems too.

>>3788648
This would have been better before Joot transferred 4chan's media/image servers to the slow shit they are today.
On an image board, bandwidth should be prioritized to images.
It clearly is not.

As for a response to your questions, give me another 5 minutes for the webm to load and i'll let you know.

I've cooked up a new layout with room for more titles. I changed the shape of the chart to fit better on typical widescreen displays, since most web browsers don't seem to like the idea of viewing webms at 100% scale and scrolling around them like still images.

I tried to dress it up with some pixel art but I don't think it really looks very good. Would flat color borders look better? Or maybe just something less busy. It kind of clashes.

Looks like it still fits in 3MB with good video quality even as the chart gets filled up.

I may be able to do significantly longer video clips if the quality is still good.

That's a long list m8, too long to fit in this little chart. It can't scroll so this 35-title version is just about the biggest I can do. If I wanted to do like 100 games I would have to split it into separate charts for separate genres (or categories of some kind). That's not a bad idea, but I guess I'd like to do a general one first.

Let's go for like two or three games of each kind on here. I should definitely add some of the indie titles like Sturmwind because those are an important part of the dreamcast scene I don't yet have represented, and I think I should also be sure to hit unique titles like JJBA. That pretty much fills up the chart though.
Beyond that anything I put on means something else has to come off, so let me know if you think I should switch in another specific fighting game instead of Street Fighter or something.

Does anyone have a real video clip for Seaman? The one I have is just Leonard Nimoy telling you to plug in the microphone, which is pretty pointless without any sound.

Unrelated, here's how the template for the cells of the chart works. The border is drawn around it on all sides (and forms the image shown in the center of the box where the video normally goes when cells are stacked side by side) and the area is divided into boxes for the cover art, video clip, title, and misc info. I'd like to make the visible parts of those boxes a little more appealing somehow. Maybe give them a little texture.

Most of the games that have been mentioned in this thread or in the other dreamcast thread are represented in this chart (either directly or as a member of a mentioned series), but there are some I haven't been able to squeeze in. If you are a fan of one of those absent games, please also suggest something to remove when you recommend your game. There are a lot of shmups and 2D fighting games on here already (which is representative of the DC library), and I'm interested in capturing a sample of those genres with as much variety as possible, which is why I've included indie/homebrew shmups over things like Border Down, Under Defeat, etc., and JJBA and Virtual On over Capcom vs SNK, KoF, etc.

It looks fine at 1920x1080 or above, although it is a little hard to make out on a smaller monitor.

For what it's worth, in Chrome you actually can zoom in on it if you expand the webm on the page (rather than opening it in a tab by itself) and then zoom in on the whole page. There's not much to see (other than my tiny pixel art, I guess) though because the boxcovers are rendered at 88x88 and the video clips are downscaled to 192x144.

I considered doing animated gif versions of the chart (which can be zoomed as normal) for mobile users, but a 3MB gif of this size can only hold a small handful of frames. The original webm has 60 frames, this gif has like 8.

A bit off-topic, but why does Dreamcast get a pass for 6th gen consoles?

If the rule for a console needing to be made before 2000 was established almost four years ago, wouldn't it stand to reason to at least let the other consoles on thr board and limit discussion to the year of released games?

>Put a 15 year rule up
>Any game and console released during or before 2002 can be discussed
>Keeps /vr/ from being stale and cuts back on the MUH shitposters

>> No.3794381

>>3794370
Whatever you personal feelings on the matter is, for some people the board is about this particular era of games and should never change, for others it's just for old games and as soon as games are considered old it should be allowed. This is the basic split of the arguments, and you'll find no consensus on the issue.

But as it stands it's for hardware before 2000. If you ever get an update on the rules it's going to be the addition of the GBA alone, because it's seen as a portables SNES. Adding the whole 6th gen would be the next step, but not before the GBA step. Regardless if you agree or not, that's the more likely thing to happen, if it happens.

I know what you mean. The unique and "quirky" titles of the Dreamcast's library are a big part of what makes it stand out as a system. I tried to cover that with stuff like Seaman, Chu Chu Rocket, Sega Bass Fishing, etc. But such a small chart runs out of room fast. Though I could switch Rez with Cosmic Smash maybe.

Racing games are a little sparse on here because I don't like MSR, and some of the more simulation-y or intense games like Test Drive Le Mans seem like they'd be too much for this chart. This also lets me keep the number of games that are just "drive a car around a city" low--Hydro Thunder is as good a racing game as any on this system, but the boat gimmick makes it a little more visually interesting. Crazy Taxi also straddles the line, even though it's not really a racing game, so the chart has a fair number of "make this vehicle go fast!" titles. If I were going to put on another true racing game, it would probably be 18 Wheeler (for the variety).

>> No.3795630

This is really cool, OP. You should do this for other consoles as well. A Saturn version would be really neat.

That being said, there a couple games on here that I really think should be removed. Sonic Adventure is a legitimately bad video game, and everyone and their mother already knows about it. Kind of a wasted spot, imo. Toy Commander is another questionable choice. Have you played Toy Commander lately? For all of its quirk, Seaman is really dumb, and I would never recommend it to anyone. Worms Armageddon is a fine console port, but there are so many other ways of playing Worms these days.

My picks would be Dead or Alive 2, Metropolis Street Racer, Typing of the Dead, and CvS2. If Typing counts as the same series as House, then I'd put Sega Rally 2.

>> No.3795739

I think you are making a lot of assumptions buddy. Of course not everyone agrees. Of course there are more than 35 worthwhile games on the dreamcast.

I'm trying to encompass the "spirit" of the platform while also representing the games that are collectively well-loved. I don't like MvC2 and I've never even played Skies of Arcadia, but you will find them on every chart or top N list. I know Sonic Adventure is controversial but the series is one of the most iconic and frequently mentioned on the console.

If you have an opinion or a constructive criticism I can actually work with, I will take it into account. That's the only reasonable way to assemble a chart like this. Someone has to be the arbiter or it will never get made in the first place. Every other recommendation chart ever posted on /vr/ has the same story behind it.

>> No.3795795

>>3795739
I think best of lists are worthless and only lead to squabbling about what is "underrated" or "overrated" In general people should be encouraged to explore games themselves and form their own opinions of what they like and don't. A list of releases is all anyone should want or need.

Making best of lists and montages is just a big ego stroking exercise that lowers the bar for interesting discussion by reducing things down to what's popular vs unpopular.

>> No.3795853

>>3795795
I can understand where you're coming from on that, but it is ultimately inconsequential for this exercise. Yes, rating and ranking things (whether books, movies, music, video games, etc.) is inherently limited by the subjectivity of entertainment. Nevertheless, people do it. My purpose in this is actually to explore a way to improve that somewhat. If I am just presented with a big list of game titles, I need to look each one up individually to find out what kind of game it is, and only then do I even begin to get a sense of whether I would enjoy playing it. Sometimes seeing the cover art, the genre, is enough to get interested, but a screenshot or a video clip is even better. Since I realized it would be possible to make a chart with short video clips included, I thought doing this might be a good way to give people exactly the kind of agency you are talking about, by letting them see for themselves how the collectively popular games for a console play.

>> No.3795883

3795883

Tweaked the video clips a little bit to try to show some action in every game. Got a real clip for Seaman too.

I'd like to do charts for other systems, but for most other consoles I would need a lot of input on what games to include. I think I might also struggle to differentiate the charts visually. I probably should've used a more dreamcast-like visual theme and color scheme to make that easier. Oh well.

Once I have templates worked up for other consoles, should I post them in their own individual threads? Maybe I should just do no more than one at a time to avoid spamming the board.

>> No.3795952

>>3795883
I think you could put them in individual threads, but when you have others you could even put them all in one thread!

I definitely encourage a Saturn wall too. I could give you some suggestions (Panzer Dragoon, Nights into Dreams, Grid Runner, Radiant Silvergun, Space Hulk, Saturn Bomberman, Sonic R [maybe Sonic Xtreme too, even though it's incomplete? It's interesting], Lunacy, Corpse Killer).

Great work on this wall. Only suggestion I could add would be to either try and make the videos loop more seamlessly (maybe a loop fade?) or make the loop breaks more spread out so it's less jarring.

also re: Cosmic Smash, I'd leave Rez in because it's so defining for the console, but Worms Armageddon could be replaced by Cosmic Smash, just because like someone else said, you can play Worms on basically everything. Or leave it as-is.

This is my attempt at a "loop fade," which I interpreted as dissolving the last few frames of the clips into the first few frames. Notably implementing this has made the chart take like ten times longer to render. I'm doing the fade per clip, so I'll try applying it over the whole chart at once instead to see if that's faster.

But is this what you meant? It's hard to tell if the seamless effect is working on my end because while I have the scripts loaded I have basically no free memory and my playback of the full chart becomes a little choppy.

Ultimately you're going to have to decide what the purpose of this chart is.

Is it a list of the most notable/popular Dreamcast games?
Is it a list of the best Dreamcast exclusive games?
Is it a list of games to check out after you're finished with the obvious choices?

All three of these lists would be pretty different, and that's why you're seeing a lot of disagreement here. If it's a list of notable Dreamcast games (or console-defining games), then of course it should include Sonic Adventure. If it's a list of hidden gems or quality exclusives, then it should be axed.
