It's an excellent little console. First of all it's very easy to get into. It's cheap, and you can download self-booting rips of games, burn them to CD-R, and play them on most of the consoles without any extra hassle or hardware. When you're ready to invest there are several alternative options such as SD loaders and GD drive replacements. This means many legit GD-ROM games have remained affordable as well (although some are quite expensive).

Arcade ports are probably the highlight, especially bullet hell shooters and fighting games, but even if you aren't interested in those there are a lot of unique games to try. Like other "home arcade experience" focused consoles, it's a great system for pick-up-and-put-down games as well as multiplayer and party games.

A top down omnidirectional shooter (think Smash TV) with an emphasis on boss fights. The roster is an eclectic mix of Capcom characters. Some stages are straight run-n-gun, some verge into bullet hell territory. Easy to pick up. Every character has five attacks including an often screen-filling special. Great for co-op.

Should need no introduction. A rare example of a perfect launch title. This is the game that made people understand the Dreamcast as capable of not just "arcade perfect" home ports, but of actually improving upon the arcade experience. An infamously campy beat 'em up, and another arcade port. Actually a sequel to Die Hard Arcade, but after they lost the license to the Die Hard name. Although there are several routes through the game, it's another that is very easy to pick up and put down because it only takes a few minutes to play all the way through. Pretty much every object on screen can be picked up and used as a weapon, including furniture, pepper shakers, a large piece of meat, and your enemies' bodies. And you can finally live out that childhood dream of fighting a giant pink octopus. Another good one for co-op.

Sometimes described as the Dreamcast's answer to Super Smash Bros, but played in a 3D environment. Things can get crazy with very dynamic stages, huge weapons, and special attacks. Console collection? As in the Dreamcast is the last thing one would get after Apple Pippin, Game.com, NeoGeo CD, Nuon, Gizmodo, and all of those Pong machines? If so, then games are definitely not a priority.

If you can't find a few games you'd want a system for, I don't think it is worthwhile to get one, so why bother with even collecting consoles? For me, I wanted the Dreamcast because I had a lot of fun with the Saturn and the release schedule did offer games suited to my tastes.

The tricky thing about the Dreamcast is that a staggering number of its good games have ports and remasters on other platforms now, like the Gamecube or even more recent ones on Steam.

It still has some great exclusives, but you might need to dig a little deeper to find them. Look up what versions of the games exist before you start collecting - compare and contrast, figure out which ones you really want on the Dreamcast as opposed to anything else.

Not even close, the only thing in common is the sheer number of racing games, the Dreamcast doesn't have many platformers or 1st person shooters, on the other hand, it was a great machine for fighting games and shmups, unlike the N64.

The N64 is like the Master System, very strong at a couple of genres (especially platformers) and very lacking in many others, both have a similar number of released games too, around 300 or so, the Dreamcast is above the 500 mark AFAIK.

REZ
More of an "artistic experience" than a game, although much more of a game than say, LSD. Ostensibly a 3D rails shooter, your wireframe humanoid character soars through what can only be described as "cyberspace as depicted in a 90s hacker movie," leisurely dismissing enemies and picking up power ups, while both the music and the visuals become more fleshed out and detailed. The building trance-like music that reacts to your gameplay and gains layers as you progress is an integral part of the game experience.

Also on PS2, but that's not retro so who cares. It fits in better with the rest of the Dreamcast library anyway, if you ask me (both as a shooter and as a "quirky" and "artistic" game).

Most of the homebrew/indie games (that are any good at least) for Dreamcast are 2D shmups. Sturmwind, Last Hope, and Dux are some examples. Last Hope, like a number of other DC indie games, was homebrew ported from NeoGeo.
There's also Beats of Rage, which is a side scrolling beat 'em up engine used by hundreds of fanmade games (often using sprite art from other popular commercial games).
Other than that there's stuff like Rush Rush Rally Racing (2D top down rally racer kind of like Overtop or Neo Drift Out on NeoGeo) and Alice's Mom's Rescue (tongue-in-cheek cutesy platformer).

This. I'll take a PSP 2000 d-pad over the DC one any day of the week (maybe not the 1000, which doesn't even make an attempt to trigger diagonals without deliberate, excessive force).

Mind you, I do have a really well worn Dreamcast d-pad that works somewhat fine (I can play Guilty Gear X pretty fine on it), but it's still really uncomfortable and feels like pushing into a rock on your thumb.
but I have another I bought new in box like 5 years ago (there's an awful lot of unopened DC peripherals, got a brand new VMU that way too), and the d-pad is probably the worst thing ever, KOF2002 is unplayable, and everyone wanted to die when trying to play Marvel with the thing

it has an awful tendency to trigger weird directions since it's actually fairly sensitive (it's new), so enjoy jumping up a lot because you applied a little upwards pressure when pushing forwards
like, pretty much every Sony D-pad but the PS2's and PSP-1000's suffers from this (they don't have the problem only because diagonals barely fucking work), but not as much

it's nice to see that Sonic isn't slathered in oil anymore

I forgot the other important bit -- SA1DC is glitchy in different ways from SADX.
like, you'll fall through the ground a lot more in SADX (but then certain paths behave a bit weird in SA1DC and they changed the pathing behavior a bit to fix it, in SA1DC you might fall out of the loop in Emerald Coast before the whale bit because Sonic stops moving forward for some reason -- but in SADX, you'll have a fair chance of dying on the whale bit for no apparent reason, which just doesn't happen in SA1DC)
I think SA1DC is less glitchy overall though, but I mostly end up playing SADX if I pull out SA1.

been looking into doing the SD loader thing because my DC is finally having read issues again and I don't want to tweak the pot (again -- solved my issues for like a year and a half) -- and it's not media, actual GD-ROMs are giving the same trouble

>> No.3786727

Is there a way to avoid using the GD-ROM alltogether? Seems to be about a 90% success rate with this method, but if I could avoid having to read discs at all I'd prefer it, the only other method of reading games I've seen is that GD-SD thing which works but still needs you to boot a disc to run the .iso of the saved games.

Your dreamcast probably has the modem adapter installed. It could go online right now if you had a dial-up number providing internet access and a phone line to use. In some locations free dial up services are available.

If you don't have a phone line and a dial-up number to call, you can use another computer with a compatible modem to simulate a dial-up ISP by answering the dreamcast modem's call and shuttle messages back and forth with the internet at large. There is now a software package for raspberry pi computers called dreampi that manages all this, as long as you have a modem to plug into your raspi.

You could also use the broadband adapter or LAN adapter to connect to the internet just as you could've 18 years ago, if you had one, but they are rather expensive now. These are not compatible with every online game, however.

Quite a few games have been brought back online over the years by setting up privately run servers. I think Phantasy Star Online and Quake III are the most popular games still played online.

What's the best way to git gud at street fighter 3 on my dreamcast?

I finally got my dreamcast the other week and I've been interested in trying street fighter 3, but god damn that D-Pad is fucking awful for pulling off combos and super moves why didn't they just stick with the tried and tested genesis/saturn D-pad???

Are there any affordable ways to get a decent replacement control scheme or should i just give up, get a $30 fightstick and just do it on fightcade?

Make sure you've downloaded the right drivers for IMGburn. Use CD-R's not CD-RWs, Burn it on x4 speed or multiples of. If that doesn't work the dreamcast, pull out the GD from drive and give the laser potentiometer just the tiniest little turn clockwise from the face up position (around 1/10th of a turn)

If even that doesn't work then chances are your GD rom drive is fucked

This is my favorite 3D fighter on the Dreamcast, and in my top 10 for the system. It shouldn't be, but it is.

First off, compared to DOA2 and Soul Calibur, it's pretty ugly. Though to its credit, it was made in 1996, so take into consideration other games that came out at the time like Crash Bandicoot, Mario 64, and Quake, and you'll find VF3 to be pretty damn impressive. However, it WAS a rushed port, and did look worse than the arcade version: characters had polygon reduction, some clothing details for certain characters were lost, and some stages didn't look as good as in the arcade. Overall, it still looked pretty close, certainly closer than VF4 PS2 was to VF4 arcade.

Yes, it was a rushed port. First off, the team battle mode felt very tacked on and nowhere near as innovative as DOA2's team mode (why I'm still comparing a 1996 game to a 1999 one I have no idea). Secondly, you couldn't view your scores/rankings until you either admitted defeat, or beat the game. Thirdly, there were no VMU features of any kind, not even character portraits for whoever you were playing as.

To make matters worse, it's light on replay value. Compared (again) to DOA2 and Soul Calibur, there are no extra costumes to unlock and there is no quest/adventure mode. There's not even endings for the characters, just a general FMV ending movie that you have to go to a menu to watch.

But what keeps me coming back to this game? The gameplay. I just love the dedicated dodge button and uneven stages. They really add a lot of strategy (or luck in some cases) to fights. It's a real shame that the VF games that came afterwards did away with these features, but that's life, I guess.

It's also a damn shame that this never got an arcade perfect-port to XBLA/PSN like what happened with VF2, so the only way to play this in an affordable way is on the Dreamcast.

tl;dr
VF3 is underappreciated and I salute Genki for making a decent, but rushed, port.

I think the Dreamcast is really overrated, but its got some great arcade ports and shmups.

Just like the Saturn I guess. I never owned either back in the day because they just didn't have enough of the current shit to be your primary, daily driver console back then. Divorced from their historical context, they are fucking great if you are into a handful of niche genres.

>you can download self-booting rips of games, burn them to CD-R, and play them on most of the consoles without any extra hassle or hardware

I wouldn't say its a no hassle affair. Protip - only download games off of the ReviveDC google doc (search for it online) other rips are VERY hit or miss. Trust me, I was floundering for days trying to get working games for the Dreamcast until I found this list.

Dreamcast discs are some kind of high capacity CD-ROM that you can't buy commercially, so the best rips are ones that someone hacked, trimmed the fat off of to get them into the 700mb territory. The mileage in the quality of these things can vary wildly, that's why I highly suggest going off of that google doc. My success rate off of that was like 90% as opposed to like 30% in the wild searching on emuparadise and ISOzone
